News GMHBA Stadium Stage 5 Redevelopment

Hence my comment..

The whole thing was painfully short sighted.

I can't think of another sport on earth where the playing dimensions of the fields are so wildly inconsistent. Amateur hour.
It's been like that for 82 years. It's only an issue now because we refuse to fall down the ladder.

There's zero wrong with the stadium..

The only thing amateurish is your posting.

The redevelopmnet was the opportunity to rectify it.

Instead the club pursued keeping the gates open over building a good stadium.
More unfounded bullshit.

The club was being pushed to move all games to marvel. We scraped enough money to start the redevelopment but as the club was broke we couldn’t exactly rebuild camp nou all in one go. Took what we could get and 20 years later here we are.

Carlton could’ve stayed at PP. Shame that the club board had financial interests in docklands stadium and those won out above your own best interests. Blame Ian Collins for that

.. Our local game which has a wide range of influences began as a way to stay fit for cricket. Is it any wonder our grounds vary? Look below ..the home of Cricket is its own wacky shape. Some sports are uniform others are different.

The MCG has become the defacto standard ... but in years to come who knows what will be the standard. Golf Courses are in a technological death black hole. The tech mean they need to be bigger ..and that makes them hard to maintain. Im sure the accountants and environmentalists like the idea of smaller grounds rather than bigger ones. More cost every time they roll out the green stuff.

Unless a mandate happens, the way we have it now ..will be the way it is for the next 20 to 30 years till the normal expected life cycle comes to an end. By that stage..may soccer might be far stronger .. and KP with its size impediments might be an ideal location for a rectangle ground ... and maybe they relocate StMarys or they decide to go elsewhere..like Eastern Park. Who knows..only a guess and I will not be around to see if im right.

I get that you don't like the shape of the ground but there was never funding to do a full redevelopment.

The Moorabool st side was never planned as some wider development, it was all standing area and designed into a new stand to make Kardinia Park a viable stadium going forward. It brought more funding and resulted in further development.

Whilst circular the MCG has also gone through many staged redevelopments and previously had odd stands. The only way for the stadium to maintain viability has been through the staged process.

There were attempts to originally make the ground wider during redevelopment but they couldn't get approval. It isn't amateur hour it's a huge credit to the club to develop the ground the way they have. Maybe the ground never should've been located where it is but the redevelopment has been great.

Even soccer fields vary at a professional level.

The argument around misshapen fields is tiresome and usually comes from MCG home teams, a ground built for cricket and the Olympics.

You shouldn't bother trying to deabte with logic or facts as some opposition supporters will always despise what we have.

Once they could ridicule our home ground as a reason that the parochial country bumpkin failed but now its an unfair and a distorted and improperly sized advantage.

I suspect , in truth, some supporters of other clubs have begrudging sneaky green eyed vindictiveness towards us as they wish they could have kept their own ground instead of casting aside their own proud history of winning by any means and any advantage. The paper bags and salary cap rorts and have now been replaced with decades of mediocrity as they have become a homogenised pale imitation of the power club they once were , when they had their own quirky little home ground.

Oh for sure. The complaints about Geelong having their own ground .....you all had one! Now you say it's unfair Geelong have one because they managed their club well and resisted the pressure to move to docklands.

Why rectify it to suit other teams? It’s our home ground. We train on it. Even if we bulldozed it and started again, I would hope it would be built exactly the same.
To suit our team. Why give other teams a leg up?
It’s called a football oval. The shape of our ground is guess what??? An oval. The MCG is a circle. No one complains about that not being more “oval” shaped.

Jesus stop winging.

With the new dedicated standing area going to be big enough to fit 2000ish people. Does anyone know how many we used to squeeze into the old Ablett Terrace standing area?

The 4 bays of standing room look like they will hold a decent number of people, so hopefully it proves a hit and isn't converted to seating after a few seasons. Also noticed all the seats have drinks holders similar to Perth Stadium. Would be nice for putting cans in if the stadium chose to sell cans instead of pouring their contents straight into plastic cups...

I wonder how many seats the area would hold. How many other stadiums have done this? Is it a way to allow lower cost entry to the ground or a bit of dodgy way to get to 40,000?

Also the cup holders on the back of the seats in front. They very high. I can imagine the drink being easily spilt down the person in front ... I dont know how many times my seat has had beer etc on it form people bring a tray of four in the row behind me.

Nothing dodgy. Very popular and safe method developed for the EPL grounds that wanted to retain standing room in a modern stadium.

So how many seats would the are take if it was not standing? Why have standing at all..why not have seats. What is the logic? Is the a comparison to any of the other afl grounds that have be refurbished waca, ao etc?

They can fit in an extra ~60% per bay so its a significant increase.

The old terrace standing room was popular and the club wanted to keep it for the members who wanted to stand at the footy. This allows them to do so.

If its a success, id expect the new shane warne stand to get it also on the bottom tier

Correct. Member feedback was that a certain segment wanted to retain standing room as an option.

I really hope cats can push to get stage 6 done and complete this stadium all the way around, will be awesome.
With the news this morning of Premier Dan canning the 2026 Commonwealth Games, I wouldn't be looking to the State government for any funding for any more KP work in the next decade.

On that cancelled 2026 games plan: Torquay & Stead Park upgrades, Armstrong community aquatic centre, hard courts in Waurn Ponds, Ballarat will get its 5000 seat upgrade according to Jacinta Allan, and some additional courts in Bendigo.

So yeah, happy with where KP will be at once done. I just hope the KP Trust (assuming this falls to them) can pull their finger out and do some maintenance to the two big screens, some of those panels have been faulty all season.

Yes those screens are poor and too small. Too much advertising around them.

On spending at KP. I know some might like a MCG Brunton Ave fly over. Some might dream about some sort of smaller version of docklands.

Id imagine it would be nice have a new stadium like we are some sort english league club like Tott Hotspur but everyone has to live within their means.

Really after the city end is finished ..Id hope that Geelong gos a good long while before we look at doing more. Im sure some would like us to have a better rectangle ground for that code of football... I actually feel Geelong the city would be better enhanced spending money on a bigger and better multi purpose venue.. for indoor sports. In years to come , if geelong is to have a 400,000 population by 2040 , then I doubt the Arena will be an ideal venue.

Anyway there other sports and venues that should demand attention ... and as you said, today shows our state is apparently moving into a tight spending mentality. I think we can forget state Gov spending at KP till the last 2030's.

Some people prefer standing. You can usually fit more people in standing too.

Standing is the only way to go if you are attending in a large group great fun mixing among your mates you can't do that with seating over 3 or 4 people

I don't know why

So we'll start it....... there
