I went and had a look at Open Training this morning, and basically had a look at the stand this morning, view was fantastic, cup holders on the seats and noise sounded good just from the nuffs cheering goals the players kicked at training.

Didn't get any photos sorry as I was also with my 4 year old who needed to go to the toilet 3 times, get food once and move seats 4 times.

But I had a look where I am sitting Saturday and very keen

Only real issue I see initially is that the main entry take you into a foyer type area and especially the first game people will freeze and have no idea where to go from there, as you need to go up stairs either left or right.

Actually and in the mens toilets I saw the lack of kids urinals is annoying, they have catered heavily to the quick piss during breaks crowd with like 3/4 toilets and the rest just bays of urinals... But I didn't see and lower options for little kids which is a bit annoying

On the way out of the community series game there were KP trust staff everywhere down there (presumabely to make sure nobody went in the areas not cleared for occupation)... I'd imagine there'll be a similar setup this weekend, with staff to direct patrons up either stairwell.

I would agree it's a little odd for the main entrance to work like that, the brownlow with a wide stairwell leading straight up works well. But I guess doing it the way they have allows for a much deeper concourse, which when you're in it feels a lot more open and light than that of the previous developments.

Yeah I don't think it's a major issue, once people have been there before they'll know where to go and it will flow easily tbh.

Players stand from a decade back is setup the same. You'd think a couple kids ones at least would help.

I mean it is not the be all and end all just a minor annoyance, but if my 4 year old wants to go to the toilet, which for him at present is a massive novelty doing it in different places so he went 3 times in 20 mins yesterday... means either waiting for a cubicle when potentially there aren't many or is high demand, or i have to lift him up and hold him which is what it is.. just not ideal, to be honest i just expected there would be at least 1 kids height 1 in there but if there was I couldn't find it

Same here, got a boy and a girl so cubicle wait-time is where life is at for some time still.

Part of me will always miss the stadium we used to have.

When I was a young bloke going to the footy, this was our most recent development.
It was our "flash" grand stand.

Little bit of an excercise in procrastination for a thursday evening... It has always annoyed me that there is only a nice round number given as the capacity (40,000) so I wondered if I could work out the exact number.

Used the ticketmaster map and got Illustrator to count all the dots for me (don't worry it wasn't a counting excercise, I'm not insane) and came up with these numbers:

Essentially this number includes all physical outdoor seats in the venue, inclding a few spots that aren't on the ticketmaster map. The only thing it doesn't include is indoor boxes, as no idea the capacities of these. And as far as I know, all function room tickets are sold with the provision for an outside seat as well, so those rooms shouldn't add to the realistic attendance figure on top of this number. Hence, i'm curious (and doubtful) as to whether there are ~1000 behind glass seats to bring the number up to 40k?

Realistically, doesn't matter one bit if its 39k or 40k, and the excitement of a finished product (finally) is still sky high. But I find it interesting how they've gotten to the quoted number, and will keep a keen eye out for a potentially fudged for marketing purposes 40,000 attendance figure on saturday night :)

Wow love it.

How did you count the seats in areas not on Ticketmaster? Like the second levels of the hickey and premiership stands?

I was hoping capacity was above 40, seeing as sell outs never really go above 90% at any stadiums due mostly to members. I think the highest likely to be achieved is probably 36,000 or so.

Must admit that part was a bit of counting, though not hard when you know the number of rows

And I’d say you might be right, reckon the opener and the Richmond game later in the year will be the big test to get that highest possible number, maybe around the 38k mark

Nice work Tyzza. Hopefully we will get an accurate figure once everything is up and running for a few weeks.

Here are the stand capacities according to austadiums.com…

“The stadium features six grandstands, including the Brownlow Stand, the Players Stand (9,340 seats), the Premiership Stand (4,714 seats) and the Reg Hickey Stand on the outer wing which seats 6,098. The new northern grandstand will be named after Joel Selwood has capacity for 14,000 spectators, including safe-standing for 2,500.”

…and from the Kardinia Trust website…

In 2005 the Reg Hickey Stand on the eastern side of the stadium opened with 6,098 capacity.

Premiership Stand on the western side of stadium, opened in 2010 (4,714 capacity)

Players Stand on the southern end of the stadium, opened in 2013 (9,701 capacity

The Brownlow Stand and Football department on the western side of the stadium in 2017 (6,500 capacity)

So, the numbers are confusing and don’t always agree, depending upon the source.
Hopefully we will get something more official in time.

As far as this week’s game goes I’d expect 38,000-39,000 and wouldn’t be surprised if it really does give 40,000 a nudge- there seems to be a bit of excitement building around town. Anything over 32,815 will be a 21st century record, as far as I can discover, so exciting times are upon us!

Wasn’t there 32k in the 2013 qualifying final when the capacity was only listed as 30k?
That was the 32,815 crowd. I checked the wayback machine (web.archive.org) and Austadiums says the capacity at the time was 34,074.
From memory there were lots of comments at the time re. the sold-out game not hitting full capacity numbers. That’s probably when we started looking a little more sceptically at claimed capacity figures.
