That Adelaide fan who was on FiveAA last night was 100% right. Their club has no spine, and just continue to let this happen to their club.

If it were Collingwood, Eddie wouldn't let the AFL get away with just an apology.

The AFC board are not answerable to their members and constituents and probably too much beholden to the AFL to try make life difficult for Gil and the Commission.

I freely admit upon seeing more angles it was a goal, and I am fine with replaying the game tomorrow if the AFL likes, just as long as Sydney is able to replay the 2016 Grand Final with the Bulldogs, bringing back the same 22 for each team.

Would be more than happy to see Goodes back in Swans colours.
Yes but this time buddy can barely move and Tom Mitchell almost the same

The Crows just released a press statement via Twitter saying they accept the AFL's apology and explanation about human error and will take no further action or appeal the result.
They also were clearly fuming, pointing out that it was "inexplicable" and that there were "no avenues" for the club to seek redress.
Also, that it would cost someone a spot somewhere in/outisde the 8.
I'm surprised that Rampe didn't try to climb the goal post again
But one of the defenders actually was using it for leverage.

What a mess.

I reckon the Swans players knew, they were getting it going so that it couldn’t be reviewed. Hard to imagine there’d be that much urgency to play on in that situation otherwise.

Fair play to them it’s smart footy.
You have a whole side of the ground devoid of opposition players, you’d be stupid to not take the risk free territory immediately.

Kudos to Adelaide for the way they've handled this, it sucks but there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it so draw a line under it
Nah pissweak actually I’m sure their members would prefer the club to make a bigger song and dance after all this is supposed to be a professional comp it’s no where near it.

The response by the AFL is actually sickening. Noone expected that they change the outcome but to suggest the system works is a ****ing pisstake of the highest order.

Ok the goal umpire is shit, but don't for a second think the system works if the process that underlines that system is stuffed and there are not appropriate failsafes in place.

AFL happy to hang the goal umpire to save themselves. It's a ****ing joke.
I genuinely thought they would've come out and said they would review the processes snd get them right in time for finals, I did not expect a carpet sweep. God I am so naive.

All you’ve done (and rightly so) is point out how incompetent (and corrupt) the AFL and umpires are. It doesn’t matter who’s side you're on, which team you barrack for because you’ll get screwed.
Yeah, it happens to everyone. All I was illustrating was the ludicrousness of that poster wanting some kind of even upper.

That said, it’s galling for it to have such a significant impact on the whole year outcome.

The only way this result was going to get reversed in my opinion is if the shot on goal was after the siren. Just have to cop it on the chin and move on, unfortunately.
Even then, you undermine the authority of the umpires in doing so.

Would be an interesting case study - hope it never happens in a grand final

So the only ramifications to come out of this entire debacle is that the goal umpire has been stood down. I can’t believe how easily the AFC has folded on this incredulous set of events. Not only should you demand more if I were a supporter or sponsor, but the competition itself deserves a more meaningful response & action.

Looked at a lot of this thread. The only thing more amazing than the decision is some of the comments and suggestions on here.
Lets close the book on...
  • Whether it was a goal or not - of course it was.
  • AFL replay the game or change the result - will never happen for many reasons. Especially because it would set a massive precedent for any future umpiring errors.
  • Take AFL to court - hahahaha - what's the offence the AFL has committed?

For mine the key questions worth further discussion are...
  • How the AFL reacts - do they admit the mistake "Sorry Adelaide was robbed but that's football" or do they come up with a pack of excuses or some waffle "... uncertain what happened"
  • Do they look at changing the rules for replays or enhancing technology?
  • and a nasty one - how do they deal with the Ump who has made one of the worst calls in history.
Under appreciated post this one. Well said.

Until goal umpires are replaced with robots there will always be a greater margin for error than automated goal/post detection systems

Direct field umpires to call for a score review any time either
  • the ball travels within close proximity of a post
  • goal umpire shows hesitation in making a call
