Pick 4 and extras for

Eagles pick 2.

Suns get a free hit before any bids OR North bid and risk Harley! North isnt bidding on Walters.

So what extra is thrown in for the Eagles?

Sounds like Eagles are happy with any one of Curtin, Watson, Duursma or McKercher. Two will still be there unless the AFL hand North the biggest leg up in history.

1 Reid North
2 Watson Suns
3 Walters bid Suns
4 Duursma Hawks
5 Eagles ? Curtin, McKercher?

What extra would the Suns throw in?
What would you be looking for?

We obviously need to see who wins out of Freo and the Hawks this weekend to get a full appreciation of what the top of the draft looks like before teams can have confidence where the GC pick will land.

If Freo win, then there would be a reasonable chance the top of the draft looks like this:

North - Reid
North (Mckay compo) - Curtin
GC - Walter (match WC)
WC - McKercher
Hawthorn - Duursma

If the proposition is Nick Watson and Caleb Graham for our F1, I'd do that trade.

It’s always easy to do these exercises to just a number.

Insert: Nick Watson and Caleb Graham for Harley Reid or Jason Horne-Francis and it doesn’t look as good.

I am not an expert on junior level talent, but Finn O'Sullivan and Sid Draper have an enormous amount of catching up to do to reach the hype levels those two received as underagers.

As you mentioned in the 2024 draft thread:

Interesting Twomey stating clubs see the current top 10 of 2024 as a weak one.

He described it as having "no star factor"

With clubs actively looking at trading 2024 R1 picks into 2023 because of it.

Are you assuming you’ll get pick 2 as compo? You could be very disappointed
Spot on

The Crows thought that the AFL were going to bump up their FA pick for Brad Crouch.

Would Ben McKay be the worst player to ever get a 1st Rd pick in FA (nb: Frawley was All Australian prior to going to the Hawaks)? I'll wait...

I think people are underestimating McKay, he was one of the best intercept defenders to close out last season and started this season off an injury and learning a new defensive setup with Logue, no surprise since Logue got injured he’s been in much better form. There’s more than one club in for him, he’s a position of need, free agents are gold dust this year and the cap is about to go up.

That’s not to mention there are two factors in compo, money and age and with the McKays being underagers that side of the herbs and spices will offset the other to some degree. He likely only needs early 700’s and like we saw with Daniher, it’s already been signed off that it’s perfectly fine to extend deals the season after the deal is done.

Whether people rate him or not is probably irrelevant, it just needs one team with cash happy to spread it about a little to ensure they don’t lose any trade collateral. If there’s two of more teams, even better. Footy clubs have people a little more in tune with players and their projections than the average footy fan.

Zac Williams…
Good call. Williams and McKay at their absolute best both deserve/d a band 1 contract. Both were unavailable so often in those first 8 years that no sane team would ever give them such a contract.

70 games in 8 years? More than half of them dreadful.

And yet Williams found his Carlton. He did play 50percent more games than McKay did over the same period though.

Worthwhile looking at the spread of McKays games and the old adage big men take time. He’s actually got a really good injury record but didn’t get any consistency until the change of coaches with Brad more happy to play Tarrant and Scott Thompson (and eventually a resurgent Majak Daw) as the key defensive pillars. That probably led to another first rounder in Sam Durdin never making it with us. It’s part of the North board mirth of Brads actively seeking McKay now when he wouldn’t play him as a junior. As it stands since he got a full look in 2020 he’s gone 66 of 77 games, with four games missed with concussion last season.

Williams as a half back mid definitely would have found it easier to break into that GWS lineup, unfortunately he’s been f***ed by injury.

I’m aware that a GC trade thread is probably a weird place to put this stuff but it’s easy to make the McKay history suit a narrative (not aimed at you personally) and I get it, nobody wants picks pushed back.

In 2023 Ben McKay is averaging the equal third most intercept marks per match in the comp (3.8).

And that's after starting the season very slowly coming back from injury.

Let's get some perspective, please. He's legitimately good.

Nice try. He’s not good. I could take 2 intercept marks a week with how much it’s down there.

Gold Coast tank to lose to North. Trade their 1st rounder, future 2nd rounder, Moyle and Sharp to WC for pick 1. Hardwick gets a big recruit in Harley Reid. WC get 2 young ready made players including a big ruckman and should still behind to get local kid Curtin.
Dreaming I know. Just pisses me off all these North supporters so happy to be shit, knowing the AFL will bail them out.

A win is way more valuable to GC this week than messing around North. The Suns are already getting possibly the best player in the draft anyway.

At the risk of getting yelled at by 45 North supporters I don't think they will get all the suggested extra's from the AFL. Especially Saunders, as that would open up a can of worms in the future. More likely more picks they are forced to trade on again (even if it's pick 2).

imagine the buzz around trade time if it was a pick 2 and they have to trade it.

Sounds like North should keep him then if he's so good and they're bereft of Key Defenders next season?

You've highlighted the problem right there. He's always injured or coming back from injury.

Hawthorn F1 + Pick 29
GCS Pick 5

Easy - no muss, no fuss. Absent an A grader wanting to go to GCS (which is unlikely), the best deal GCS will get as neither North nor WCE are trading their F1 for pick 5 (6).

Well pick 2 last year got pick 8 and 12.

Pick 4 is obviously better than pick 8. So 4 plus a late 1st If they hold one.

Or a player?

Or a 2nd rounder plus a player depending on the player.

Won't offset the risk of Hawks picking Curtin if he is available

WCE Out 2,21
WCE IN 4, 25, 62, Brocky, Sharp

Suns Out 4, 25, 60, 62, 69, Sharp
Sun IN 2, 48

Hawks Out Brocky, 48
Hawks In 21, 60, 69

I'd do it for the Suns.
Doubt West Coast pull the trigger.

Sharp has no value, the Suns will trade him to WC for the promise they don't bid on Walter. That's worth more than any junk pick they can't take to the draft anyway.

Gold Coast won’t have enough draft points to match all their academy players if they did this.
