Please watch the damn game before making inane statements like this one. Young Siggins showed a lot of poise at times, taking a couple in timely marks in the last quarter. He competed very well against the North big men IM
Ramsey had a good game as well. Jake Kelly showed enough to suggest he will make it.
Only going on what I've been told but hey mate thanks for the feedback. Nutter.

Actually, since Walsh subbed out Lyons and Crouch and played a C grade midfield and U/18 ruck in the last where North had the wind, I felt like Walsh was throwing down the gauntlet to the defence. The defence is going to be a concern this season, and the last quarter on Sunday I felt was a great opportunity to test it under some pressure, but with no consequences in a practice match.

Hmmmm ... still needs a bit of work.

No that it means anything, but unless Crouch swapped his number 2 jumper with someone else, he played the whole last quarter in the guts. Along with Sloane.

Think Grigg is a touch overrated on BF, a class player no doubt but that may be why I judge him harshly. He's also incredibly slow so needs to be very good at his strengths as an outside mid. Hope he gets there because he has some weapons. We now have Lyons and M Crouch hot on the heels of Thommo but we should find a spot for Lyons in any case now, he's too good not to

Grigg annoyed me a bit in the game with his lack of pace. He should know he isn't quick enough for this level so needs to be closer to his player when there is a turn over option/quick kick coming back. He was just that little bit to far away to close quickly enough to give decent pressure to his opponent for my liking. Knowing your limitations and positioning yourself to minimise those limitations is a sign of a player who understands their limitations.

Man, how good is it to have footy back!

Trying to think of a better trade to the club than Eddie (Macca never really played for Freo). Scott Welsh was pretty handy, and Duck was a bigger name, but oh boy has Betts been a great recruit or what?

My other big take-home from the game (was only able to watch patches) was that Charlie Cameron is going to be a very exciting player.

So... football. A few observations, noting I have only seen the first quarter and a bit so running on very little:

I like the "full team defence", hard defensive running and pressure on the ball carrier. It seemed a step up on the past couple of years. There were still some incidences where we got sucked in to the contest though. One of passages in the highlights clips showed a perfect example where one of our players had laid a tackle on Drew Petrie (I think) in the D50. The tackle was laid, nothing was to be gained from a second player leaving his man and coming to the contest, but they did anyway. Petrie managed to get his arms clear and dish the ball out, allowing team mate to waltz away with the footy, resulting in a goal. Again, it's only NAB Rd 1, but it was a prime example, IMO, of what has been mentioned so far this pre-season, that Kyle Cheney is the most knowledgeable player r.e. team defence, and that there is a lot of teaching to be done.

As a by-product of our mids/half forwards working back, some of our transition ball movement was then long and direct, resulting in us turning the opposition defenders around and getting over the back. This could work well with some pace in the front half (finally). Betts, Jets and JJ will work well turning their defender around and heading back towards goal. Assume Tex will be the main hit up target (particularly if Tom Lynch keeps ducking his head), will learn more in the coming weeks.

It appeared that much of our ball movement out of the back half was looking to work diagonally to the opposite HFF, a long, direct switch working to the fat side. Again, this may work well, but foot skills need to be precise. I did like link up handball at times, using overlap run to get the ball carrier "out" in space to deliver forward. However, I did notice that many times we went the old quick kick out of packs. Many have been critical of the overuse of handball we have seen in the past couple of years, but I believe it is down to the poor decision making/vision from most of our players (dishing off to teammates under the pump), and an inability to spread effectively from contests to get the player out. The quick kicks reminded me so much of sitting in the stands with everyone screaming, "Just bloody kick it!" only to be followed by, "Who the hell was that to?!"

Again, Rd 1 NAB so hard to draw any conclusions. Looking forward to getting a clearer picture of Phil Walsh's 'football philosophy' with more senior players playing over the coming weeks.

Thread derailed. Well done guys.

Crouch the big positive - he will scare the shit out of teams this year.

Jaensch looks ready to resume his good form from last year.

The footskills of our backline (Talia, Hartigan, Laird, etc) make my heart skip a beat every time they get a possession.

Darren Jarman was pretty handy on his day. And he had a couple of big ones.

Loved his inside work, such a big body to have around the ball. And seemed to have decent hands in close too, very quick. But his kicking, oh dear.

I remember him snatching the ball in a centre contest with 2 players on him, wriggling his body around to break the tackles, which he did with ease, then firing out the handball to Crouch, who in turn handed it off to somebody who escapes me at the moment, and then we were away. He's never going to have elite disposal by foot, but if he can at least get it to AFL standard, there's a lot to work with. 190cm midfielders don't come around every day.

Scott Thompson goes alright. But you do have a point

Man you really have a hatred going on for CEY don't you?
My eyes were telling me he looked to have improved a lot since his last game for us. Sure he missed Betts, BFD, there were plenty of howlers during the game. I like the way he competes and gets the ball which is the main part of playing the game. (get ball, kick or handball the ball) see footy is basic.
Lyon gets huge praise and personally I see a competent lad but nothing to make me believe he is a superstar in the making. Ditto for Grigg.

His inside game has improved markedly, there's no doubt about that. But still his kicking left a lot to be desired and he fired of a heap of errant handballs.

He's a great mover no doubt and would add a little pace and height to our side, but the big thing for me is, do we really need another inside midfielder that can't kick and damage the opposition when he gets on the outside? At this stage Id still be looking to Mackay or Grigg for a spot in the 22 over CEY unless he proves otherwise. I cant see him knocking anyone else out of the side.

Jarman>>>>S Thompson>>>>Bassett>>>>Jacobs>>>>Betts

In time, I expect Jacobs and Betts will leap frog Bassett.

I agree. Kennedy aint the greatest kick either, but 190cm mids are hard to find and harder to beat at the contest often creating a 2 on one to bring them down. I think some continuity of AFL footy will help, hope he plays in the next preseason matches. his form line (from someone who actually watched him closely last year in the SANFL), was definitely his best and most consistent year, despite what others have said on here.
