The immediate question that arises to me is that maybe you're better off without the data. Obviously especially when things are going well.
Could be.
Fagan and coaches had no reason to change much after 1/4 time.
Well on top, no need to change things unless something obvious to the coaches popped up.
Sydney only looked like kicking a few when the game was all but over until the siren sounded.

I’d also say that the data helps to validate the coaching staff’s on-field observations on how key areas of the game are unfolding.

So, whilst important, it’s not a deal breaker. Fagan probably loved the challenge on some level, relying on his old school coaching nous!

I wonder if the players were told.

Things like stats can cut both ways. If your numbers are good but the team is down it's easy to go 'I'm doing my bit', stay as she goes.

Without stats players might just keep pushing.

Definately a learnings moment. I hate that word, but it fits.

sleepylion (did I remember correctly that you are jessica) next version of you wonderful video can include this.
You are correct!!! I saw this today and could not believe it. New strategy guys - be so dominant that data is unnecessary:tearsofjoy:

Next iteration will include more focus on Oscar's incredible selflessness and an animated feature where fagan receives a blank piece of paper and then faints mid-game

The data's there for when you're looking for answers because you don't have any.

The main beef that I have with the data is that it skews the way players play. What does every numpty do when the game's over ? They look at the stats sheet.

The most crucial features of footy aren't there. The IMPACT and TIMING of particular pieces of play. The potential mistakes that aren't made. The selfless parts of play that bring others into the game. The judgement it takes to take the right option, even if it's a defensive one. So many more.

imagining fages getting the blank sheet of paper and taking it to mean everythings going perfect and not to change a thing.
Or just "shit, I forgot my glasses."

"I've got the stats here boys, but you know in your hearts what we have to do here today," (POCKETS SHEET DRAMATICALLY WITHOUT UNFOLDING IT) "so there's no point going over them. Keep the pressure up and back yourselves. You know, Karl Marx once said..." (etc.)

"My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism" It was evident that this inspired the players to win the premiership and add a few extra dollars to their next contract.

He did.

I still don't think apart from the first half against Carlton we were going all that well . But probably not as badly as the win/loss ratio.
I believe we had some bad loses tactically early on. Geelong in the wet being a prime example.

Hmmm.

So the stats showed that even though we were losing we were actually winning.

I'm confused now.
Even without getting into advanced stats (which are largely hidden behind paywalls in the AFL), there's a lot of statistical evidence that your percentage says more about your actual quality than win/loss record. The intuitive reason being it smoothes out luck and individual actions over a larger sample - if you have close losses and big wins you're probably not as bad as those with big losses and close wins even if you have the same overall record.

When we were rocking in 13th we had a top 8 percentage the whole time, and other than immediately after Hawthorn beating us we actually had a top 3 percentage or better. That is pretty conclusive that we were better than our W/L but the big concern was whether we already had too many losses to get to a decent enough position at the end of the year.
