I want to know more about “gourmet hotdog”. What’s gourmet about it?

I like vegan frankfurt with pickled cucumber, celery salt, red onion, grated carrot, mayo and maybe a touch of funny sweet and sour sauce.

Also, classic recipe dog with cheese, fake bacon, brown onion (raw) and tomato and mustard sauces, classic for a reason it’s unbestable.

Annual Grand Final breakfast at my parents. Last year we enjoyed breakfast burritos.

Beer at local establishment. My podcast has been asked to host the Stomping Ground tap takeover on the day but want us to record at 3pm during the game. Letting the other boys handle it for a few reasons. Mostly my wife, who has been pregnant all year and can finally drink again following the arrival of our daughter. Hosting duties are at our new house for about 8 friends plus kids.

Food:
Cob Loaf
Southern fried chicken. A recipe came with the mixed 4 pack of Mountain Culture beers I purchased online. A Southern Fried IPA will be the pairing. Big fella at 7% in a 500ml can.

Drink:
Aforementioned Mountain Culture.
6 pack of Oktoberfest Hefeweizen which has become tradition since spending 2016 Grand Final over there.
A cocktail or two.

Bed at a reasonable hour due to having a toddler and a newborn.

THIS is why the daytime start is always the best.

Probably go with some of my award winning dishes.

Appetizers - Meze. Feta. Kalamata olives.

Main - Fasolada. Moussaka. Pastitsio Kolokithokeftedes.

Dessert - Loukoumades Melomakarona Baklava.
Fasolada? The rest is a little odd but I get it, but ... and I love fasolada ... bean soup?

This year, I'm adding to the standard BBQ with some cheese fondue. I've had a cheap fondue kit sitting on a shelf unopened for about 15 years, and decided it was time to actually give it a spin. Then I decided if I'm making fondue, I should do it properly, so went out and got a proper one with burner and a cast iron pot.

If you like ginger beer, I strongly recommend trying Matso's -- dry, good ginger hit and really easy drinking for summer.

matso's good, diablo better

Cheers for the Ginger Beer recommendations guys. Unfortunately (or fortunately for my sanity) I only drink the non-alcoholic stuff. Gave the booze away a few years ago. From that POV Fever Tree is by far the best Ginger Beer I've ever tried. Ginger kick for days and not too sweet. In a tall glass with heaps of ice and a squeeze of fresh lime.

Someone asked about what makes a HotDog gourmet and posted some recipes a few back.
Mine are pretty simple but its about the quality of ingredients.
  • Elmars or other quality German butcher for the Bratwurst.
  • Fresh made Sauerkraut with dill and juniper berries in it.
  • And really important. Fresh bread, as close to straight out of the oven as you can get. I use Baguette as you can cut it to the desired length as you go. I go down to North St or Wild Bakery near where I live in Freo and buy them in the morning of the game.

Everything else is details, German or other mustard, grated cheese, caramelised onions, relish of your choice. I sometimes make fresh salsa with green chilli, lime juice, fresh coriander, garlic, red onion and tomatoes.

But never compromise on the sausage, kraut and bread. You can't go wrong then.

I reiterate my love for this thread. I love hearing about the different ways people enjoy themselves on what is probably my favourite day of the year.
I've already noticed people down the park with Cricket bats and the goalposts are still in (they take them out for summer) but GF day is officially the start of spring. I actually go through a period of mourning when the footy ends (its the only sport I still follow with any passion). The warm weather and the beach are the comforts of summer but I feel lost for a few weeks without footy on the weekend so the GF is really poignant.

Enjoy BF comrades.

I am good to go.

Emmental and Gruyere cheese shredded ready for the fondue. Some sour dough and cocktail franks for dipping.

A wide range of beers.

For the barbie we have:
  • Scotch steaks, with a brisket rub

  • Chorizo (flavoured) Sausages
  • Roo skewers
  • Honey and Mint Lamb Backstraps
A friend will be providing some absurdly tasty braised beef ribs.

Chorizo sausages and chicken sausages
Cocktail Frankfurts
Strawberries and cream
Sweet chilli chips
White chocolate with raspberry
Raspberry splices
Red frogs
