Well said BH. I think it's just a bit of a shock that so many players are wanting to leave in one season, but in reality none of them are really our core players. Perhaps in years gone by we would have paid an extra 100k to hold onto fringe players, but now we're not trying as hard to retain players we don't really need.
Turning over the list is a healthy thing. Freeing up more spots means we'll have a greater chance of unearthing quality in the draft or rookie draft that will actually improve our list.
Still hope we keep Walker though. Not too fussed about the other 3 going.
The real test now is optimizing our outcome in trade week.
Players like Grigg provide competition for spots (only positive) and depth in case of injury. Losing 3 or 4 experienced players in the one season and replacing them with 18 year olds will set us back in the short term.
Not happy about losing all of Jacobs, Thornton and Grigg. And potentially Walker.

Very dissapointed to see Grigg go. He will be a top 100 player in the AFL and is a massive loss to the club.
He was very hard done by at the selection table the last 2 years IMO, and being a high pick Ratts should have given him more of an opportunity.
Still, he is a w***er for leaving and I will boo the sh!t out of him for as long as he plays.

This pissed me off when I heard it on the Footy Show. But it may be a blessing in disguise, do we really want an idiot who isn't willing to earn his spot?
Walker's the same. He puts in shit performances and when he gets dropped he has a sook and wants to be traded but "happy to stay if a deal can't be done"! Really? Well you do have a contract with us so of course you'll stay if a deal can't be done. He's just saying that because if a deal falls through he doesn't want to end up having a full year at the Bullants.

True, but this is also provides an opportunity.
In a limited draft these players value increases particularly for teams looking for specific needs like Adelaide, Bulldogs, Hawthorn and others. Swann & Ratts now have 4 possible trades to work with and hopefully will trade smart and get the right picks/players to meet our specific needs.
The worst thing would be to lose our uncontracted players (Jacobs and Grigg) in the PSD for nought. Sorry, I know principles are important but do we really want to lose 2 players for no return at all?

The club has shown faith in him by contracting him and he still has the decency to ask for a trade because he can't get into the midfield ahead of Judd, Murphy, Simpson, etc? Heck if any Defender is going to be played in the midfield it's going to be Bryce Gibbs.
How does him demanding where he plays and having a sook about not getting his way any less dirty than walking out for money? The coach makes the decisions on where players play not him.
People don't go to work and demand to their boss what job they do because they'll find that they get the arse soon after.
Disappointing. Weak. Where is the sacrifice for this great club? Does not realise it is a privelage to wear the navy blue. Has hardly been able to string games together because of injury, and when he does come in it takes him 3 weeks to get going. He's able to finally string half a dozen games together - then asks to be traded. Piss off.

Bullshit.
Where a player is selected in the draft should have no impact on whether or not they get a game.
If they are performing well enough to play senior football, you play them. If they aren't, you don't.
If a player thinks he's in the best 22 at a club, isn't getting a game, and isn't prepared to put in the hard yards to prove his coach wrong, then he doesn't deserve to get a game.
In this game, talent will only take you so far. If you don't have the right mentality, sooner or later that'll catch up with you and it'll smack you in the face.
The Carlton Football Club is a proud club that should not be playing players because they think they deserve to be playing. That's why I was a strong advocate of dropping Gibbs early in 2010, and that's why I now want Grigg shipped off to any club that is willing to give up the most for him.
I like Grigg as a player and I think he has what it takes to be a long term player in the AFL. However, if he doesn't want to be here and work hard for his spot in the team, then he can take the easy option and play for a club holding up the ladder for all I care.
To blame this on Ratten is completely ridiculous. He is not at fault in the slightest.

Might even struggle to be a walk up start with Martin, Cotchin, Jackson, Edwards, Deledio, Foley, Tuck, Morton, Connors, Collins and possibly even Tambling ahead of him.
Good luck at that team of world beaters.

And want to play with Carlton.
This isn't a disaster given we've made the finals without Grigg and Walker playing a huge part in 2009 and 2010.

I was upset when I found out last night but have since accepted the fact that he has requested to be traded for his own selfish reasons.
From a couple of the posts that I have read, it appears that he is going for the $$$$$$$$ instead of loyalty & committment to the CFC.
If he was at the B&F Tuesday night, he obviously took no notice of Stick's opening & closing statements in his speech ..........
So Grigga don't slam the door on the way out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever had a job??
People do this. All the time. I've done just that several times in my career. And those times when the boss said 'no', there are two choices: lump it or leave. Grigg's taking the second option and good for him.
He hasn't managed 50 games over 5 years at Carlton due to injury or form. For his career a new scene is probably what he needs, because if he stays here and nothing changes he'll be delisted in two years anyway with very little to show from a 7 year AFL career.

wow 16 pages on grigg whose leaving is not totally unexpected (tried to warn you all in the vfl grand final thread) this place is going to go into meltdown if the another player with uncertainties about their role within the team decides to move on also.
this type of thing happens when you are emerging as a competitive force again, those on the fringe who have been getting games find it hard to adjust to the changing landscape.
