Firstly, the "No Kane Cornes" Rule is back

Whitfield has 5 years to go on his current deal and is owed
$6 mill due to the contract being heavily back ended. He also get's an ambassador allowance on top of that which will end if he did leave GWS for any club outside of NSW and QLD.
How do clubs get themselves in such a mess?

Mate he's gone from getting #1 midfielder minutes/CBAs to unceremoniously dumped on a flank.

He's not the player he once was and I'm sure that's frustrating for Tom as it is to us as fans but he's a model professional who has paid back the club with some fantastic footy.

Did the trade work out as we hoped in terms of silverware? Nope. That isn't Tom's fault. We aren't ******* Carlolton with a need for a Messiah. He was to be one of many pieces of a puzzle that didn't quite work out.
unceremoniously dumped, LOL!

New coach basically exposed him for the player he is. Accumulator, nothing personal.

Tom Mitchell is only averaging per game for us:
#1 Most disposals (by a fair margin)
#1 for contested possession.
#4 score involvements (best mid)
#1 for stoppage clearances
#4 for tackles
In a subpar midfield, he isn't making difference despite leading those numbers

If your getting that much and its still not working, there is an issue

I am sick of watching him handball to feet

While he is an elite ballwinner, he does not suit our style, on the weekend he took an advantage for no reason , ran back into traffic and then handballed to someone under pressure

He ball hunts to the team's detriment at times, and I cant see him changing his ways at his age

Only reason i wouldnt do the 2) plan is that we have a mid first round f/s projecting currently

Burning 2024 first rounder for no reason really

Oh true, good to know. It’ll be interesting to see what we do with next year’s draft picks in that case.

If we have a F/S pick slated to be a mid first - maybe we trade out our 2023 second round pick to get another selection in this year’s draft.

2022 Draft haul - 7, 25, 30 (Mitchell), 31 (future 2nd)

2023 haul then looks like - 7, 15 (F/S pick) + couple late picks that aren’t eaten by the bidding points.

Or he just skies the ball to no one.

I've always said, has never been the same player since the leg break.

This is the hypothetical thread, so do not shoot me. This is just a hypothetical.

We have Sicily, Blanck, Frost, DGB and now maybe Jeka as key defenders. Plus Hartigan but he might be finished. We cannot fit them all in.

Sicily is our best player. A gun, a playmaker, a matchwinner, just entering his prime. Our most valuable asset. But maybe, just maybe, we could cover for him, and gain somewhere else from a hypothetical trade.

Gold Coast have lots of picks this year. A first rounder (8), 3 2nds, 2 3rds, 2 4ths. Plus they are about to lose Rankine and gain another top ten pick. They have a heap of young talent, and would love a ready-made player.

What if Gold Coast offered us two top-ten picks for Sicily, (4 and 8}? Potentially Tsatas and Hollands / McKenzie as well as our own pick 6.

Would we consider it?
I know the vitriol might come at you in the next few pages. If so, I don't think that's fair. It's a hypothetical thread.

The answer to your question is 'no' they wouldn't consider it.

What's with all the Tom Mitchell hate?

Did people expect him to solve world hunger and find a cure for cancer?

Seriously, the guy carried us into the finals in 2018, then had a shocking leg break. Now he is adapting to a new role for the sake of the team.

Take the hatred to the sooky corner or the Veruca Salt board.

I for one are not "hating" on Tom, but i just think he dosent suit our future needs, and that he is one that could suit a contender and would fetch the best price

Its a Win/Win in my opinion

Tom's been excellent, and can continue to be, just at a club that can maximise his talents

My expectations has always been unders in a Mitchell trade. Pick around 30-40 is realistic. And we would still need to pitch in with salary.

Again - other than Hawthorn2023 I don't think anyone here hates him or doubts what he did for us in the past. But we need to focus on the next 5 years not look back on the last 5. Tom would still have some trade currency and is presently replaceable in our midfield composition the way we are presently playing. If we can extract draft capital for him I would hope to hell the club is exploring it. This doesn't make me a Mitchell hater - it makes me a Hawthorn rebuild enthusiast.

Short answer is no, but with an abundance of Defenders at what stage do the Hawks and other clubs start working on trading contracted players.

Not saying I would advocate this hypothetical trade but given his age would a player like Frost be better suited in a team like Carlton? And if we were to pay most of his salary would the compensation be worth while?

It’s these out of the box strategies that I see clubs pondering until the green light is lit on trading NBA style.

The introduction of a Mid Season Trade period would make trading depth players really interesting.

Feels inevitable it will be introduced at some point in time, sadly probably not in the next few years as we rebuild and hunt picks.

I hope we adopt nothing from that sport in regards to trading.

The moment a player is in Brown and Gold one week then playing in different colours the next is the precise moment the loyalty that is left in football starts to die.

The mid-season draft has been a roaring success. Trading between AFL listed clubs at this point would result in players like Newcombe, Blanck, Pickett, Snelling etc potentially missing out on an AFL career.

Fortunately for the poster, Hawthorn2023 said “hold my beer”.
