Firstly, the "No Kane Cornes" Rule is back

No problem, valid point.

Draft pick wise, what is your expectation if he was to be traded?

There is potentially more value to be found in the way we structure our current midfield with Mitchell gone.

As a result, I'm personally not fussed about what constitutes breaking even in any trade scenario.

Here is a hypothetical with the benefit of hindsight.

If we traded Tom Mitchell last season for the pick we used on Connor Macdonald, would you accept a similar result?
The benefit of hindsight being that now Dylan Moore and Jai Newcombe look like potentially elite midfielders. Plus we have Connor Macdonald to develop through that area of the ground. We wouldn't be sitting here lamenting that we let a Brownlow medalist leave for less than he's worth.

Could you accept 'unders' in a Mitchell trade this year and hope that we kid we select is as promising as CMac and the hole left by Titch allows James Worpel to flourish again?

Could we have won 8 games this season without Tom? Yes.

Can we win 8 games next season without Tom? Yes.

My expectations has always been unders in a Mitchell trade. Pick around 30-40 is realistic. And we would still need to pitch in with salary.

Richmonds draft hand (3 consecutive picks in the 20's) plus list needs were the perfect scenario for a Mitchell trade 12 months ago.

I'm not as confident that an appropriate suitor will offer up anything even remotely beneficial to us this time around.

Why can't you start here rather than going on a rant against a player?

I think it would be a touch higher. If we pitch in salary could be in the 15-25 range.

Those are cute individual accolades.

How many finals did WE win?

If we are basing trade wins off Premiership wins then 90% of trades have been failures.

We absolutely have 100% broken even with Tom. He's given everything he has for the club, hasn't sooked about his new lesser role and has given us some very big seasons especially pre-injury.

I think the sticking point was the he still had 2 years to run on his contract. That's too much to take on for the tiges.

This year, with 1 year left, and Hawks help out with, lets say, $400k, would Tiges consider pick 29?

Keep in mind, Tiges also need to offer Tom a new contract, at least 2-3 years.

Yeah 12 months ago I thought it was a good decision for Richmond to give this season a crack but with Dusty potentially leaving its probably time they hit the draft.

Sydney probably the best fit but that seems unlikely.

Franklin to Sydney was a success for the Swans despite the two fails in Grand Finals.

They've only missed finals twice in his time there and he looks likely to leave or retire as they enter another sweet spot in their list demo.

On the flipside, Tom Boyd to the Dogs is just as successful for completely different reasons.

Currently not in best 30 mids in the comp, 29 years old.

If we paid 100% of his salary, that would be the only way we get a pick in that 15-25 range.

Very expensive exercise.

Can you really see Jack walking out on his family and moving interstate (after wanting out of Adelaide as soon as he could to move back to Melbourne) a few months after the death of his father?
Personally I can’t, but I’m not Jack and I don’t know whether another chance at a flag before his time is up drives him more than staying close to home.

Lesser role? Stop it.

Whitfield (cap dump) and giants first pick for hawks first pick?

Tough one - love the idea of moving up in the draft for free. Downside is Whitfield takes young guys spot in the team and might not be physically or mentally up to giving 110% for a flag tilt.

It’s probably not gonna happen either way. Based John Ralph’s report on On the Couch it’ll be the likes of Hopper, Taranto, Greene or Bruhn on the way out due to GWS having way too many inside mids meaning they will likely keep Whitfield.

If Gunston and Breust had any incentive to leave to win another Premiership, I think they would’ve left already by now.

2023 will be the 12th consecutive year they’ve played together. Making them one of the Hawks longest ever forward duo to have played together.

We need them for 2 more seasons

Mate he's gone from getting #1 midfielder minutes/CBAs to unceremoniously dumped on a flank.

He's not the player he once was and I'm sure that's frustrating for Tom as it is to us as fans but he's a model professional who has paid back the club with some fantastic footy.

Did the trade work out as we hoped in terms of silverware? Nope. That isn't Tom's fault. We aren't ****ing Carlolton with a need for a Messiah. He was to be one of many pieces of a puzzle that didn't quite work out.

We currently have 6 picks inside the top 30 over the next 3 seasons. So it’s a matter of finding an additional 4 to 6 picks in the first two rounds in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 drafts.

It’s a good plan to bunch our young players up to come through and challenge together, but McCartney will likely have to rob a team or two blind to action that plan.

My realistic plan would be -

1) Trade Titch for a second rounder to a mid hungry team in the premiership window. In return we get say pick 30.

2022 Draft haul - 7, 25, 30

2) In 2023, trade our 2024 first round pick for another mid to late first in the 2023 draft (pick 10 to 14 range). Picks would likely have to go back/forth to get it to work but in short it’s gambling that we are finals bound in 2024.

2023 Draft haul - 9, 12, 27

This is contingent on getting Amon and another free hit or two in 2023 (either a key forward or speedy forward would be 👌)
Only reason i wouldnt do the 2) plan is that we have a mid first round f/s projecting currently

Burning 2024 first rounder for no reason really

We would still need to offer him a new contract, 3 years @ $700k, at a minimum.

Very expensive.
Whitfield has 5 years to go on his current deal and is owed
$6 mill due to the contract being heavily back ended. He also get's an ambassador allowance on top of that which will end if he did leave GWS for any club outside of NSW and QLD.
