Autopsy Hawks vs Buddy Boy and the COLA kids

Yep. I thought he fought on really well. Did some good spoils. Attacked the ball and lead Tippet to it on numerous occasions. Did his job.

Interestingly, I thought Gibbo's lack of match 'poise' was a factor in the first half, seemed to really regain his touch as the match went on too.
Interview with Gibbo in the rooms post game seemed to suggest they were trying to rotate who they were on in the first half (led to the Tippett goal over Burgoyne) but in the second half Gibbo said he'd just stick with Buddy where ever he went and like wise Schoey stuck with Tippett for the most part. Seemed to work well as I believe Buddy went 2.5 in the first half compared to 1.0 in the second. The second half goal was really just Buddy's elite athleticism + an unlucky bounce for Gibbo.

Personally I still think its a worry.....we know we're going to have ebbs and flows through matches, At our lowest ebb Tippet looked on the verge of ripping the game apart...it was a fine line.
I thought the game still showed why Lake is so so important to our premiership aspirations, because when they have a run on, Lake is the more equipped to win more of those contests one out. Which may possibly be the difference in the game.
Its quite simple when they have a run on restrict as much as possible, when its our turn make it count on the scoreboard.
Lets be realistic here guys, not that im putting Schoey down in any way, but he will never make it as Key defender we've all seen enough by know to realise that, so has the club and that's way they were grooming him to play up forward but hasn't had the opportunity to do so this year through our injuries...
When any of the two of Spangher or Lake come back in, if there's no position for Schoey up forward he will be dropped to BHH to help them win their second flag back to back playing up forward..
I don't think many will disagree that Schoey is a much better forward than defender. It shows in the way he plays. If we had Lake and/or Spangher available last night I'm quite sure Schoey would've played forward for most of it. He played back last night out of necessity and he did so on a much larger opponent who has frequently troubled our team in the past. He kept Tippett to 2 goals when he is usually good for about 4 goals against us and he did some really good spoils that prevented what would've been certain goals.

Realistically speaking Schoey is a forward playing back as a defender and has done a very good job on a number of forwards who've troubled us in the past (Pods and Walker, and now Tippett). The return of Lake and Spangher in the coming weeks will likely see Schoey move up forward again. Credit should be paid to him as he's done a very good job for a big part of the season where we've been without Gibson and Lake - and he's done it in his first season back from an ACL too. He (along with guys like Lewis) has been instrumental in insuring that we're still in contention for top 4 given the injuries we've had this year.

Whats was the go with Roughead and Gunner's convo with the umpires late in the 3rd?
Gunners got gut punched by I think Laidler?? Roughy remonstrated with him afterwards.
I think they were also trying to make sure that it got looked at..

Still think Birchall is underated, his run and carry would have to be in the top 3 in the AFL?
Pretty damn good but just from our side Hill and Smith have pretty good run and carry. One thing that I think sets Birchall apart from these two is that he isn't easily prevented from linking up for the one-two handball. He'd be a good 10-15kg bigger than the other two and it shows with the way he just sets a path and bulldozes through packs and tackles. Would be awesome if we had a right footed version for the other flank.

$wans are our bunnies for sure 4 out of the last 5, only lost when missing our top 2 mids and Rioli after half time.

Don't see how the $wans can beat us on the MCG in the finals, we already saw tonight that they couldn't get it done with a fair bit of umpire assistance.
Swans are a deadly opponent . If Franklin kicked straight we would have been maybe 5 to 6 goals down, different night.

Next time we will have to really make a plan for Tippet and Buddy and stop them . Brian Lake will help. Cyril perhaps back, Hale back in form having a rest. There is some heavy artillery to be ready for the finals coming back. Add Spangher , Duryea too. We have some power there.

Hale marking in the forward line , higher scoring more targets for our mids, Lake wiping/taking out Tippet , he'll like that , maybe the finale, for the big backman.

Gibbo and Shoenmakers double teaming Buddy, and anyone else ready to run and kill forward thrusts, like the little assassin Poppy, blend the rest in and we have a good chance. But NO GUARANTEE.

As I'm sounding pretty sure it'll be Sydney, we both have to get there first, maybe neither will, but I don't feel that at the moment.

Next week we need a massive percentage boost, but Footscray are not a team to take lightly . Hawks won't.

Yep Laidler. He's got a bit of history with strikes.

Just to clarify my position on last nights incident, I believe the correct outcome was awarded. Obviously I believe the review system shouldn't be in effect, so disregarding it's existence would result in the umpires original call. Every year prior to the implementation of the review system it would have been deemed a goal, no matter how much Gibson argues. It always needed to be an obvious deflection to be called touched and that was not obvious.

All this shit system does is give supporters another facet to be aggrieved about.

I think you should've added "under the current system," after this statement. It was obviousely touched or McGlynn would have been jumping up and down celebrating the goal. Instead his body language showed how disappointed he was that Gibson had touched the ball.

What I would like to know is whatever happened to the field umpire calling "touched all clear?"

Surely he was, or at least should have been in a better position than the goal umpire.

Don't worry guys, we are using up all of our BAD LUCK during the home and away games. Our GOOD LUCK starts in September.

Also Rough wanted a free kick - reckon Ump said "didn't see it" and Rough did not seem satisfied with the answero_O

Were the Hawks just taking the piss?

Score was Hawks 104, $wan$ 94

Take 9.8% off our score (10.2, rounded down to 10) we get 94 too!!

Surely the AFL will scale our score down so the swines at least get a draw.
You're looking at it the wrong way around. The AFL should take 9.8% off their score which then puts us on top of the ladder where we belong.

What if Roughy had kicked straighter?

Gunston also was stiff by just a few cm's for 2 potential goals himself.

Breust even missed a snap in the first quarter. That rarely happens.

No, I think it should have been awarded a goal. If that happened before the review system was introduced, it would have given a goal. And tbh, you can't know for sure that McGlynn was saying it was touched. It's just as possible that he was saying don't review it.

I think if you look at McGlynn's face, you can say without a doubt he knew it was touched.

First half Schoey was old school Schoey. Deserved a kick up the bum for that effort. That dropped mark was shades of the prelim final against the Pies.

Second half Schoey was good Schoey. Deserves praise for that effort.

Really happy for Woody. Who knows how many games his career has in him. Maybe 5, maybe 250. However, after a decent run of bad luck to get his first game in such a cracking contest - bloody wonderful for him. :thumbsu:

My boy JL was enormous. Really hope he wins the B&F (in a Premiership year :)). Just getting better and better this season. Loving watching him become the man in the middle after having to spend a few years treading water due to his greater flexibility as a role player than some of his midfield teammates.

Breust is just a jet. Great don't argues and his goal kicking is now sublime. Has stepped up after last year's yips.

Hodge, Birchall, Poppy, Shiela and Rough all great and Mitch getting back in the swing. Gibbo also got better as the game progressed.

Really pumped for the rest of the season.

Huge shout out to Big Boy. Thought he was fantastic. Shouldered the ruck after Cegs was subbed. Gave us a big advantage around the clearances and clunked some telling marks in the last.

Aside from the win, the night was capped off brilliantly with the post match interview with Cyril speaking about a return for either the Cats or Pies game.

I missed that. Hannebury is a big out for them. No opposition supporter will ever accept it but Rioli is an equally big out for the Hawks.

So many great moments:
- Puopolo's goals - both were brilliant.
- the Lewis torp that Puopolo ran into a goal

Poppy's finish was great but that moment was all about Lewis for me. One of the best moments for the season.

We were struggling to hang in there, Lewis gets the ball and looks up and no one is forward at all. Just Poppy powering back as hard as he can with his opponent. Lewis flushes a beautiful torp on the run that he not only hits sweet and gains distance but actually puts to Poppy's advantage.

I'm man enough to say it moved a little. :p Up there with the Guerra kick in, Stratton mark/handball, Buddy leap and goal v Collingwood.

Lewis has easily been in career best form this season. Would be right up there in the Brownlow votes if he played in some lesser quality midfields.

If I had a dollar for every time I thought "if Franklin kicked straight" in the last 8 years, I'd be a rich man!

And we may have won 1 or 2 more premierships.

;)
