I still think Sewell will be part of Clarko's plans for this years finals. Sure he is 30 and nearing the end of his career, but he's an outstanding finals performer with a proven record to perform in big games.
Sewell and lake are both guys that are proven capable of being bog in a final.

Cyril provides the kind of finals pressure that makes guys panic. His skill around the packs and ability to set up goals for others is huge .

Three big ins.
Pressure on the rucks to perform each week.
Young and fringe players like litherland, Simpkin and Langford doing everything asked of them.

We are looking very good.

Time to fine tune the game plan for a fortnight before the next big test.

Each week we are getting one or two results going our way:

Freo losing to at Kilda
Port losing to Richmond
Sydney losing to us (hell yeah!)
North losing to Carlton (pesky Basterds)

Geelong is the one that keeps getting out of trouble. Hopefully north and/or Freo knock them off in the next fortnight.

Nailed it.

Shoe is not a defender, but he is doing the team thing at the moment.
Shoe can not defend against giant forwards, like Franklin and Tippet, but he is a good forward and when Spangher and Lake get back , he gives us another option up forward. I thought our forwards did the job but they also struggled a bit to . Sydneys big three had an easier day , but we kept it away from their frontline as much as we could. When we have a full contingent in the backline including Spangher. Shoe goes forward. With Stratton down there and Gibbo then Litherland and Lake with Hodgey generaling, we would have been much harder for Sydney. Imagine Hale back in form too. We are still undermanned even when we aren't. Ha ha ha !

Got me stuffed how they are still in the top 4 let alone equal top. Been woeful for 10-12 weeks but the craps sides just can't bowl them over despite taking it right up to them nearly every game.

Okay - Petrie and Cloke kick 5 against Lake, and for 70% of games played Shoe has played back and the most he has kicked on has been 2 this year. Yes I agree he will prob be a better fwd than back, but give him some credit in that he hasnt been towelled this year. If you listened to Gibbo after the game, in the first half all the backs were rotating onto different players (Yes I think I saw Shoe on Tippett more so than not in the first half) After half time - Shoe stayed on Tipp and Gibson stayed on Franklin - between them there was 1 second half goal (I am pretty sure of - not 100%)
Shoe provided little or no rebound - but especially after half time Tippett was shut out of the game. I remember a game in 2012 towards the end of the year, Shoe took Cloke to the cleaners (only 1 for the day), Tex Walker scored only 1, Shulz scored 1 this year. In as far as stopping his opponent he has done tremendous work. Offensively rebounding he has turned it over, but he has a heap of mates doing that as well.
I think if you asked the AFL coaches if Shoe can play key back - I think you will found a difference of opinion. I would suspect that the word is he has had a very good year stopping his opponents, but he has had some brain fades when rebounding.

Good reply.

In Clarkson's post-match, after the preliminary final loss to the Pies, he was furious. Leveled at the rest of the defence that they "threw Shoey under a bus".

Whereas around here Shoey was being baked and slaughtered for his efforts. And the inevitable cries for a gorilla or two were loud and persistent.

Fact is we play a team defence. As long as our defence group keep the other team to a low score, we'll win most games. There's no doubt Shoey is a work in progress and has deficiencies, but he also has a lot of great qualities and skills.

I too thought Shoey did very well after half time last night.

Funny think about Lake is that because he trusts his ability to hang of his man and judge the ball, he'll get goals kicked on him where he isn't within 20m of his opponent. It means he doesn't look as bad as Schoenmakers getting out-bodied by his man, but the six points on the scoreboard are still the same.

I want Lake at his best back for the finals, but we've seen bloody little of that this season.

when the game was on the line Shoe dropped a basic chest mark…this lead to the ball up that lead to their winning goal…i prefer him in the forward line and he and spangher are probably competing for 1 spot

I'm perfectly aware of how the game played out. My points were simple:

1. agreeing with the poster that AFL coaches might have different view of him as a backman than many supporters. I tendered our coach's opinion as an example.

2. That we play a team defence. And the total effort of the defensive group is what's critical not necessarily individual performances.

I too would prefer to see Shoey up forward. But some of the stick he's copped around here has been unbelievable.

Loved the football lesson that Breust taught Nick Smith. Just beat him in a bunch of clean one-on-ones. Smith has a good record against Rioli (he's an utter scragger, but I guess if the umpires are going to let him do it he's doing his job for his team) so it was good to see Breust so damaging.

Interesting comparison. Whereas Rioli is trying to break from his opponents, Breust is a strong 1v1 player and a fend off beast so perhaps is more suited to succeed against a physical opponent who is allowed to get away with a bit.
