The best bit is the Hawks deciding it's time for a rebuild then remembering they don't have their first round pick anymore . Doh !!!!

The writing was on the wall last year when they won all those tight games by a few points , teams started to realise they weren't the team of old. Then they lost a close final and out in straight sets . Gave away Lewis and Mitchell for next to nothing was a huge mistake . They didn't realise how vital they were to the side.

All that effort to get a player who hadn't played for about two years was a huge risk. Once a player does a knee there's always a chance of redoing it or the player not having the confidence to back himself for at least another year of playing and some never get back the speed they once had.

Will Clarko do a Lyon and run at the end of the year now the hard work as started all over again. It's no good screaming out your guts or having exciting game plans if you don't have the cattle on the park to follow through. He might decide its time for a change for both him and the club.

Also at the end of this season you would think they will lose their last old players , Gibson and Hodge might both pull the pin as they aren't even a shadow of their previous bests especially Hodge. He's been a great player but time is catching up with him. He did well to out survive Ball and Judd and the others from that draft but time is up.

Haven't seen much in the twos that are going to rebuild the club. Last time they were like this the guys that came in were guys like a Franklin etc but they haven't got that sort of players in the twos anymore.

One last comment about O Mera he wasn't a champion when he did his knee . He looked full of potential but he was still very young so he might not end up a champion. I think the Hawks got caught up thinking he was a champion already.

Looking forward to watching Lewis smacking his old team around this weekend. Still can't believe how cheaply he and Mitchell were let go, trading out two aging champions like that and still entering the draft at 88.

And then they remember they don't have their second rounder either - they have GWS's pick, so they enter the draft in the mid 30s
Makes you wonder if Gold Coast anticipated this year's ladder a bit (probably not to the current extent) and insisted on their second rounder as opposed to Western Sydney's

That first week of finals though...

Rematch of the Giants and Dogs which is always a great game, Dangerfield back to Adelaide, Can the Eagles win on the road and the Saints take on the Dees in a battle of the building lists.

Will be really interesting to see how the Hawks v Melb game goes tomorrow. Hawthorn bring in two of their experienced brigade and drop 2 of the young ones, so they're clearly still playing to win and to save their season. This is also the type of game that Melbourne tend to do a Melbourne in.

The good thing about this is that we win either way.

Melb win and Hawthorn possibly go back to last. Hawthorn win and it puts us one game clear of Melb on the ladder and makes our job of making the finals easier. A draw would be OK too!

Melbourne by a point. We remain 8th, Hawthorn go bottom.

Dees are still a bit flakey. They could easily lose this one today.

Hopefully they hold form and roll the dorks
