Wrong. Hawks did what they had to do by the rules of the AFL.
Correct. For reference below, once the HFC had the report outlining serious allegations they were duty bound by the AFL’s protocol to hand over the report to the AFL integrity unit.

I will pin this post, as it seems to be a constant query.

“Hawthorn and the former players, partners, and their families have chosen to settle the Federal Court proceeding, without determination of any parties’ allegations”

Expected outcome … sad, would have preferred this to go public
What more did you want to go public? The court documented responses to the claims from the club (much of it that included references to evidence in the form of SMS and emails) made it pretty clear that largely what was claimed was a matter of personal perspective. Playing it out in court would have just been an expensive and hurtful spectacle for the players, families and former staff.

Nothing has been swept under a rug here. The claims are public, the refutations along with evidence are public.

Essentially the club has shown evidence that it was a matter of genuine misunderstandings and unique cultural perspectives but are apologising for what they acknowledge as the real hurt that it caused them, and committed to actions that should prevent that type of thing from happening again.

I hear ya, but I’d rather hear the truth than have the findings swept under the rug.
Agree. In the views of public opinion, there still remains a cloud over Hawthorn, and now we’ll never get to hear those allegations and rebuttals. Probably for the best I guess. Just glad it’s over tbh.

And what of AFLs threat to impose sanctions on Hawthorn over this saga? I assume this puts a full stop to that.

We know the allegations and rebuttals along with supporting evidence. You’ll probably find the links to those court documents somewhere in the last 30 pages.

We still don’t know what actually happened. 50thousand per person is not an overly large amount of money (if thats the case) . Pretty pissy outcome when you consider its two years of legal wrangling .

And the main reason the players launched the action - to get recognition of what happened - didnt happen at all. Just the club saying "okay, we acknowledge you believe it happened, but we dont."

Dollar dollar bills...

It cost more to defend by paying the legal fees that paying them off...

Was it justice or money they wanted?

What was the driver here ...

Once the lawyers get involved the case loses control as legal firms 1st priority is how much they can milk the situation...

All parties by now may have learnt the lesson... go into mediation ASAP and get the lawyers out of the scene ASAP.

How do you think the player's leg rep comes out of this? A lot of huff and puff and then what.. neither a large financial settlement or payday nor a legal finding of guilt. Absolute crap from them.

JFP ... what was the settlement amount? We will never know mate...confidentiality agreement (blah blah).

Also who was paying the players legal bills ... was it the players themselves?

If players were paying... there won't be much left after the lawyers take their fees for representation...

This is a crap 💩 for every single person and club involved.

Was it worth it in the end ... no one can speak therefore who will ever know !!!

Glad it is over... onto next manufactured scandal.

Contrary to what some believe, this is a good outcome for both parties

It now just remains to be seen what Clarkson, Fagan etc. choose to do

All were adamant that they wanted their day in court

This is a dignified end to a sad story. Well done Hawthorn FC.
Reading the WALKING TOGETHER statement on the website - released by the club in conjunction with the former players/partners, it is clear that the club openly accepts, as a matter of fact, that:

"the allegations were made in good faith, and has heard, respects, and accepts that they represent their truths. Hawthorn is sorry and apologises that the former players, partners, and their families, in either pursuing a football career, or in supporting such a person, experienced ongoing hurt and distress in their time at the Club."

To those who say the truth hasn't come out, I suggest you read the whole statement. Importantly, as some had suggested earlier, this isn't all about a cash grab, but a change in processes for the better and an apology for past hurt caused.

The healing can begin. :thumbsu:

Except it clearly did.

It’s literally why it says as much in the joint statement.

It's not a great article when you read it. Takes pot shots at the club for not "acting sooner" and absolving people because they had a heartfelt discussion, and that painted the club in a corner.

Jake has chosen to write a very 'safe' and 'correct' piece that isn't necessarily accurate.

At least he has correctly stated it is his opinion.

It is the reality of the situation. This whole thing was nuanced from start to finish, it wasn’t black and white.

Hawthorn had to stand its ground, but ultimately couldn’t win by doing so.

Apart from the news that the players and staff poured their hearts out to each other and managed to work through most of the ill-feeling with acknowledgment and understanding, Niall says what we already knew, in reality, regarding Hawthorn having no real way of ‘winning’ this thing and eventually coming to the conclusion that settlement was the only path forward.
