Did you read the weekend newspapers and learn why collingwood and carlton are the greatest ever rivals in the competition and not the so called lollipop rivals of essenscum and wet toast.

And did you actually read on why they were rivals and did you notice that it really has nothing to do with how many games they have won or what the crowd atterndances are or any other bullshit crap stat you wanna throw in.

Must Agree With ya joffa..CArl vc Coll is the best rivalry in football..No One cares about essendon anyways besides gump and his stats book...Was at the game...Its was nice to ee you at 3qrter time on the big screen...I didnt realise you drank coke? I thought it was a good old VB...

11,000 less coz a lot of ppl didnt know wtf was going on with ticketing and were not sure if it was sold out or not.

U read in the paper that there is only like 4,000 tickets left and on the raido.

Essendon people are annoyed that their team hardly got a mention yesterday or again today. And why should they. Were Essendon ever going to lose to their so called rivals west coast yesterday. Me thinks not. The Essendon West coast rivalry is piss weak compared to the Collingwood Carlton rivalry and only a fool would deny it.

Certainly the greatest rivalry. It is one of those intangible things that the Essendon statisticians couldn't possibly understand.

Oh sure, we hate Essendon alright. They are annoying bastards! But they are also a little like Chinese food, just not satisfying!

Collingwood however, that's a lifetime hatred. With all due respect .... you Magpie fans are the scum of the earth and neither of us would have it any other way!;)

In my opinion, the 5 biggest rivalries featuring Victorian based clubs are (in order) :

1. Ess vs Carl
2. Carl vs Coll
3. Ess vs Coll
4. Carl vs Rich
5. Rich vs Coll

Carlton vs Collingwood has been huge for 80 of the 100 years (it's been nothimg, really for the last 20 years).

Essendon and carlton is an older, more ancient rivalry, with Grand Final match-ups spanning from 1908 to 1993. Collingwoodvs Carlton Grand Final span from 1910 to1981

Carlon vs Collingwood has been the leadng rivalry for most of the VFL's 105 years, but I think it has been superseded in recent times, helped no doubt my Collingwood's demise. I mean, Collingwood hasn't even played Carlton in a final sinve 1988. And when was the last time a Collingwood-Carlton match was decided by less than a goal?

In the early part of last century, Fitzroy vs Collingwood was the biggest rivalry, but it diminished as Fitzroy became shit. Carlton vs Collingwood is still massive (I've put it at number 2, showing my respect for the rivalry), but Essendon and Carlton is the biggest now in 2001. 16 premierships each. There are more "bragging rights" with Essendon vs Cartlon. In recent times, Carlton vs Collingwood just hasn't lived up to the hype. You;d have to say that Essendon vs Carlton has lived up to the hype

Essendons only real rivalry is with Hawthorn which came in, in the 1980's beacuse both teams had success. Essendon Carlton only really occured after the 1999 Preliminary final. Essendon WCE is just a bit of jacket waving.

Collingwood Carlton is still the number one traditional rival

Richmon Carlton is also a strong rivalry

Melbourne Collingwood are also traditional rivals

Collingwood Essendon only really occurred because of Anzac day and because of 1990.

Premierships have nothing to do with Rivalry.........

Essendon and Carlton are only rivals because of 1999 are they? Ummm, yeah right? Ha ha ha. We will just forget about their Grand Final match-ups in 1908, 47, 49, 62, 68, and 1993. We will just forget about Neale Danihers goal in the dying seconds in 1981 to give Essendon the game.

We will just forget about John Colemans 100th goal coming in the dying seconds of the 1949 Grand Final against Carlton. We will just forget about the 1968 Grand Final won by Carlton over Essendon by 3 points. We will just forget about the 1947 Grand Final, won by the Blues over the Bomber by one f*cking point.

I suppose when Essendon and Carlton met in the 1993 Grand Final, they weren't rivals then, eh? You idiot.

All three of Essendon, Colligwood and Carlton are huge rivals with each other. They are rivals because they have been the 3 most successful clubs, and they have been up at the top of the ladder with each other for most of the 105 years of the VFL-AFL. That's what makes a rivalry. If clubs are continually successful, and are always in the finals with each other, then the rivalry will be there.

Essendon and Collingwood, for example, have been traditional rivals going way back to their Grand Final match-ups in 1901, 1902, and 1911. When the 2 clubs met in 1990, they were still great rivals due to both clubs success, but incredibly it was the first Grand Final match-up since 1911. It re-ignited an already ancient rivalry.

You seriously have no idea about football mate. I know that Carlton vs Collingowod is huge. i admit it. But for you to say that Essendon vs Carlton only happened after 1999 shows how sad you are. You seriously know nothing about football if you think that. Essendon and Carlton are the 2 most successful clubs, and have played in 6 Grand Finals head-to-head. it didn't just happen in 1999, you idiot.

That would be like me claiming that Carlton vs Collingwood is only a rivalry due to 1970.
