How does Paul Chapman slip through?

Geelong had to make the hard choice and I think it was the good one, It is worth more to the Cats for a young player to get games then Chappy.

He's only just turned 32 not 42. What if we thought that about Fletcher 6 years ago? Seriously in such a tight season a guy like Chappy could have made a big difference to the Cats. He's consistently averaged 20 games a year throughout his career.

This season if he played for geelong he probably would of made a difference however that young player could make the difference for the next 7 years.

I do see a similarity to what Sir Alex did in 1995 as he sold various more experienced players despite all signs and logic saying don't do it and guess what happened those kids became pretty damn good and won stuff.

Sometimes you have to make the hard choice and my club has done the same with Dal Santo and Goddard.

Except he's had hamstring problems and played 8 games last season because of it.

Old age + injury don;t go well together.

You mentioned his performance in the SF and I mentioned that he got suspended and basically cost us a GF spot. He should've been smart and experienced but he wasn't.

And so...?

His performance in that game seemed like a good reason to keep him. Unless you're suggesting that getting suspended was a good reason to dump him (and you've said you're not), again, I'm not seeing the relevance.

He is a great player and I would have loved for us to pick him up but sides would be worried about if the hammy goes and it is a really bad one then it would pretty much be lights out.

A "really bad one" to anyone in the twilight of their career would "pretty much be lights out" I would have thought?

It was just last year and it's not chronic. Didn't Robert Harvey have injuries during his early 30s?

If that young player's ready he'll force his way in otherwise he's not ready.

**** the performance in that game, he cost us a GF birth.

We got rid of him because he's injury prone.

Geelong was in the top four in the betting for the 2014 premiership in the preseason (and I haven't checked, but if anything, they would have shortened since the season started); St Kilda was fancied for the wooden spoon. If Geelong was in St Kilda's position (or like the Bulldogs, with Cross), I would have been quite ok with Chapman leaving. If you consider yourself a premiership contender, you don't get rid of one of your top 10/AA-calibre players, unless:
  • He's a troublemaker/problem on or off the field
  • He's making exorbitant salary demands/you have a list squeeze
  • He wants/demands to go
The first and third were clearly not the case and since he signed a one-year deal with minimal fuss at the end of a very solid 2012, it's hard to believe that he would have demanded anything more at the end of 2013. With Corey, J.Hunt, West and Podsiadly already leaving at the end of 2013 and Chapman qualifying as a veteran, it's similarly hard to believe that Geelong would have been under any financial stress to try to fit him in.

If Fletcher or Harvey cop a hamstring I would be confident both can get back, don't think either have a history of hamstring issues. If you have a lot of scar tissue in your hamstrings as you get older it just gets harder to get back on the park after a bad one, the lack of elasticity becomes the major problem.

And again...

Chapman's games played since he established himself as a regular in the seniors:

2003: 22
2004: 25
2005: 19
2006: 22
2007: 19
2008: 19
2009: 20
2010: 24
2011: 23
2012: 21
2013: 8

His recent injury history is far less concerning than several current Geelong players.

Yep and good luck to Chappy. Hope he has a great year.
But I have moved on and am happy about Geelong's direction. Nothing stays the same. That's life.

If I was in Geelong's position I would have went with youngsters too. The last thing you want is to pull a St Kilda.

I think it's worked out for the best on both sides, Geelong gets to play a newbie and develop him, and watch their much loved star play on - Essendon get a champ in return. Win-win.

Geelong V Essendon will be awesome to watch when it comes.
