How does Paul Chapman slip through?

I hat
I hated him when he played for Geelong, now I don't mind him. Same thing happened with Ablett II.

If Joel Selwood ever plays for another club I can't see the same happening though.
I hated him when he played for Geelong too.
Words can't describe how I feel about him now

The topic if this thread isn't how/why Geelong let him go its why on earth was Essendon the only side that wanted him.

Spot on - when it was decided he was going to go elsewhere - linked to several clubs - Richmond came out and said - hes not a good fit for our club - Nth Melb said the same thing - both Super Dumb

McKay at Carlton - did say they were interested in both Chapman and Pods - no other club - except Essendon were interested

Chapman wasn't on the fringes of the best 22, nor did he look likely to be any time soon. The other veterans that departed at the end of 2013 were either likely to be outside the best 22, or would have been just hanging on for one of the last couple of spots. Chapman was pretty clearly still one of our top 10-12 players.
Yeah, I know. Read my post. I said he made us a better team and that trading him made the Cats temporarily worse. And that this was still the smart thing to do.

In other words 'a slap in the face', something that Chapman would never have agreed to.

Where were the 'games based' contracts for Podsiadly, Hunt and Corey in 2013? I wonder if that will be offered to Enright for 2015.

Pods and Hunt were crap last year and are crap this year, Corey was past it too.

What do you have against our youth that you want them to be kept out of the side?

I'm still not quite sure how Geelong have missed a very winnable GF by a couple of inches on a Travis Varcoe kick, and then convinced their supporters they need to rebuild.

Ahhh the AFL... the only league where 5 years in the future is more important than today.
I don't think you've been paying attention - Geelong has been quietly rebuilding for about 3-4 years. Compare the 2007 GF team to the 2011 GF team to the current team.

We've been blooding young players throughout our dominance.

Way to comprehensively miss the point. Injuries aside, in 2012 none of those players were playing at anywhere near the level that Chapman was in 2013. So why wasn't Chris Scott telling them at the end of 2012 to expect eight senior games in 2013 so that players like Thurlow, Horlin-Smith, Schroder, Murdoch, Walker and Brown could have gone into 2014 with an extra half dozen or so games under their belt?

I have nothing against giving young players a go; I have a lot against saying that it's a massive priority of the club in 2014, when most indications from 2013 were that they were much more comfortable flogging the veteran players into the ground, despite young players being available and playing very well in the VFL. Resting senior players on a regular basis was a cornerstone of the club's philosophy in 2011 and it rarely happened in 2012/2013. Players only seemed to miss games with genuine injuries, or suspensions.

Yes, Geelong fans are distraught at the sight of Caddy, Guthrie, Murdoch etc being given opportunities and running around turning into very good players.

Caddy and Guthrie were playing in 2013 with or without Chapman and considering the players available at the moment, Murdoch would have been at the start of this year as well. It probably would have been someone like McCarthy in the first two rounds and Sheringham last week that would have missed out.

You're talking about Joel Corey who was still averaging over 20 touches and five tackles a game in 2012 and 2013? And who racked up 12 tackles in our finals loss in 2012 and 11 tackles when Freo beat us in the 2013 finals?

And Paul Chapman who had slightly worse stats in 2013 save that he averaged 1.5 goals per game?

I think you are mistaking kicking goals for overall importance. Chappy is very, very good but Corey was still having a very significant influence right up until his retirement.

So what's your theory, that they don't think it's worth developing younger players, they just hate Chappy?

Don't be an idiot. Have a look at the age of our side player for player and the scoreline flattered us in that prelim last year. And we don't rebuild we have been gradually blooding young players in since 2010 (Duncan and Menzel) but need to get a bit more aggressive with it now as a whole group of our players enter their twilight. Chapman is still terrific but has a history of soft tissue injuries and as recently as last year a simple little hamstring tear cost him what 15 games? I think Geelong's position was understandable just as Chapman's was in seeking better opportunities and I'm loving his work at the Bombers.

I seriously question my team and how they didn't feel Chapman would be more than a handy pick up. It's not as though any of us didn't see that he was still capable of what he is producing for Essendon. Not enough done by the other 16 AFL clubs?
He wanted to go to Essendon so we got the deal done. We don't **** over players who we no longer require (we're three from three don't forget). We traded Gardiner, King, Hunt and Pods all to the clubs of their choice for 6th and 7th round picks.

Staggering decision. I said it at the time too. He was the one delisting I didn't understand!

Club legend. Still playing some of his best footy.

Should have game him a full year. The other 3 were clear decisions.

If he didn't get injured, great, we get good output from him. If he does get injured, bad luck, a younger guy gets to come in and get experience. Win. Win.

I don't like how we treated a club legend who was still playing so well.
