Hypothetical Draft Pick Trade Thread

Port paid a future 2nd to move up two places last year. We’d be looking for at least something of that sort of value if we were to drop backwards in this draft.
Yep I’d swap 6 for 10’with the blues if they swapped their f1 and f2 for our f2 and f3 I still think we get one of our top picks at 10 and we strengthen 2 picks in a stronger draft. Blues will think they are top 4 amd we bottom out so perceived gap between the swaps is not that much

I know people think we need a single digit pick and a lot of that is who’s available of course but wondering what people think if we ended up with a draft haul i think is achievable of 14,17,22,30,36,52?
Trade 1 hawks give pick 6, get swans 14,17,42
Trade 2 freo give 30,44 hawks give 24
Trade 3 lions give 36 hawks give 44,48
Trade 4 dons give 22 hawks give 41,42,50,65

Sample draft haul
14 hotton
17 jones
22 George
30 allan
36 magor
52 vickery
Rookie Lawrence

I'm not doing that. We need a high end pick this year.
We need high end talent. Really depends on how we rate the top 10-15.

Look at 2019 draft for example - from pick 3 to 13 (day) you’d probably only take serong, green (academy) over option of Day and a F1.

It’s not out of question that we rate eg Jefferson as a better talent than the mids likely available at 6/7 (ex tsatas of slides or possibly Humphrey) and think we can get him at pick 10 but generate an extra good pick.

I believe so, yes. We are one of the only clubs with the resources to be able to help the Lions out with enough points to get Ashcroft and Fletcher. It’s just a matter of what that trade looks like.

The only other club that can really help them is North, who could trade their 40, 43, and 70 (843) for one of the Lions 2nds. Likely 34 (542), and maybe only 40 and 43, dunno. That would get the Lions 265 points. Depends how many picks North want to use. 70 will come down a fair bit after all the bid matching so might be worth keeping. It’s only 39 points.

But the trades can’t happen before the draft, because the Lions need open list spots for every pick they have at the start of the draft. And I’m pretty sure they are already at capacity. But once the draft starts, they can trade for as many as they can.

As for a trade with the Hawks… firstly we need to solve an issue. We have 48 and would likely use that in a Lions trade. But we can’t because they traded it to us. Rules say they can’t get it back. So we need to swap that for something else first. I’d suggest a trade with the Blues:

Hawks give 48 & 65
Blues give 49 & 66

They gain a spot on both their later picks, we get picks we can use in a trade with the Lions. And we only drop 25 points value.

Then we can trade with the Lions:

Hawks give 41, 49, 50, 52
Lions give 35, 36

We gain two better picks, they gain 194 extra points. Along with a trade with North, it should be pretty close to what they need depending on where the bids come. If they want more points from us, they could give us 36 and 38, or we could give them 66 as well. Or both. Depends how well we negotiate and if the Ashcroft bid comes at 1 or 2. Personally I think 2, GWS would want Cadman to be the number 1 pick, and remember that Daicos slipped to 4 last year. If the first bid is at 2, it makes it a lot easier for them.

If my calculations are correct, that would leave us with 6, 24, 35 or 36, 36 or 38 and possibly 66. A decent hand even if it’s 36 and 38.

Phew. If you got through all that, well done ha.
Excellent post FuzwaldQO ! 🤘🏻 Thorough, insightful (I had not thought about the no-give-back pick clause with Brisbane) and well written. I have bookmarked this post and hope it happens come draft night.

I like the idea! of fattening out our full ground talent this year and looking for the high end talent in 2023.
But if we were going to do this I’d prefer to find a way to pick up Jefferson as part of the strategy.
Honestly, I don’t see that number of trades as possible… but it was fun to consider.
Amateur hour extended 😀

Trade one of our late picks and WB F2 for the scums 22.

Package up the rest of our late picks for 36.

Pick 6 - power mid (tsatas/Humphrey)
Pick 22 - versatile and athletic KPD - Weddle
Pick 24- small fwd with jets and skill - Jones
Pick 36- centre clearance contested mid - d'aloia

My early wish list

Can't be serious with that Pick 22?

*nothing to do with the player, but the position???

We can only dream of getting 22 though, Bombers have fingers crossed to bring in 5, 2 1st rounders, Davey twins & Munkara.

I'm fascinated by our play on the night re this. We have to nail one of these pick trades. Either Bris or Dons.
The only way I can see us not getting pick 36 from lions is norf. If they give 40 and 43 that’s around the same points as 48,50,52 from us. Dons 22 is f2 dogs plus 41 unless they use it to trade up before a Davey bid. We keep 65 for a vickery or Lawrence match. Whether 22 for f2 and 41 is a good idea is hard if we get jones George konstanty I probably do it especially if we get 2 of them with 24. That said if 41 delivers lemmey or D’aloia and we keep f2 that’s also a decent result. Nice to have some flexibility.

I wouldn't be trading 40 and 43 as those will come in to the mid and late 30s when Lions match bids for Ashcroft and Fletcher.

But its Norf we are talking about so anything is possible

Sleepless thought - would we consider trading Pick 6 for Essendon's Future First + Pick 22?

Imo we should consider moving up to 4 with the dons this year. If they want phillipou we could offer

6 + our two future 2nds and some late picks for Davey matching.

For 4 and 22 this year and a future 3.

I don't love moving out of the second round next year but I think locking in tsatas could be worth it.

Love the creativity but I don’t see the need if dons want tsatas they won’t trade pick 4 if they don’t he gets to us and suns won’t take him. For me we will get one of tsatas philippou mackenzie or Humphrey at pick 6 so we need to hold our capital and bring in lots of talent. we can then fill gaps when we are a more attractive destination club. Now if you have a way to add pick 4 to pick 6 which is what I have been trying to do without losing our f1 I am all ears!

Hypothetically based on a couple of posts and news i have read the best case scenario for us will be:

1. Trade Pick 6 to Sydney for 14,17 and F1.
2. Trade 14,17 to Carlton for 10 and F2.

From what i have read it seems Sydney are after Humphrey, if we rate Humphrey the same as Phillipou and Mackenzie i think we can get 1 of those 3 at 10. With the Carlton trade i have read they are looking at adding another pick between their 1st and 2nd selections this year. This trade gives them 14,17 and 29 rather than 10 and 29. From our perspective if Ess pick Tsatas, then GC pick Ginbey, Syd pick Humphrey, Geel pick Clarke, WC hopefully pick a WA boy (Busslinger, Hewitt), St Kilda go for their NGA in MAckenzie it will then leave us with Phillipou.

Then hopefully Davey gets bid on by one of GWS 3 teen picks we can then do:

3. Trade Carlton F2, 50,52,65 for Essendon 22 and F3

This leaves us at 2022 draft with 10 (Phillipou), 22, 24 and 41 (Which will drop to late 30's after bids matched etc). Take 4 players in ND and hopefully we can just rookie Vickery and Lawrence if worthy. Then also trade 48 into a F4 for next year.

For strong 2023 draft we will then have: F1 (Ours and Sydney), F2 (Ours and Dogs), F3 (Ours and Ess) and F4 (Bris and the one we flip for 48 this year).

Hypothetically speaking....

If the Hawks rate McKenzie, Phillipou or even Jefferson over Clark but St Kilda and/or Carlton are really into Clark then I’d be happy to see the Hawks slip back from pick 6 to pick 9 or 10 while upgrading pick 41 to 28/29.

If the Cats really want Clark (him being ready to play AFL and the Cats time is now) then they can swap 7 for our 6 their future 2nd for our future 3rd.

The goal would be to set up a sellers market for pick 6 while still getting the player we want.
Cats have 7, 58, 64, and only have their future 1st. They have no other future picks. And because they have no other future picks, they can't trade their 1st. The only way for there to be a trade with the Cats would be:

They trade pick 7 and their future 1st, for the future 2nd we have that's tied to the Dogs, along with our future 3rd, and the future 4th tied to the Lions (so they have a F2, F3, and F4). That's actually making my head hurt trying to work out who win's that trade. We would be giving up a future 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, for a future 1st at the end of the 1st round. Not a great deal. Unless they throw in their crappy picks after pick 7 this year as well.

We would slide a spot in the 1st round this year, and give a future middle 2nd round, early 3rd round, and late 4th round.
We would gain 58, 64, and a late future 1st.

And that is still a crap deal. I think a Hawks trade with the Saints or the Blues are much more likely.
I know people think we need a single digit pick and a lot of that is who’s available of course but wondering what people think if we ended up with a draft haul i think is achievable of 14,17,22,30,36,52?

I think the Swans trade is unlikely. There's a fair drop in talent from where our 1st pick is now vs 14. Pick 9 I can see working, 10 would be pushing it. 14 is too far for me. Dons want to either trade up with 22, or move it to next year. I can't see them trading 22 for a bunch of lower picks. Rules state that we can't trade 48 to the Lions, as they traded it to us. I like your thinking, but there's a fair bit that won't work in those trades.
Sleepless thought - would we consider trading Pick 6 for Essendon's Future First + Pick 22?
Consider? Sure. Do it? Unlikely. I'd want a better deal than that. As much as the thought of 2x 1sts next year appeals, it also means 22 would be our starting pick this year. Ouch. No 1st round pick when we are in the process of a rebuild? No thanks. And it means that Essendon have picks 4 and 6 in this draft which speeds their rebuild and slows ours. Hell no lol.

I can't see Sydney giving us three 1sts for pick 6. Carlton might do the 2nd trade though. But that doesn't help if Sydney don't do the first lol.
Sydney might do their future 1st if we gave the Dogs future 2nd back? Try and get their future 3rd as well to help with McCabe points. Dunno. It all seems a bit convoluted to me. I'm just not seeing why the Swans would give up that much for pick 6. If the Blues would do that deal, why not talk to the Swans direct and do a trade with them. I can't see us being involved.

For this years draft I want either Tsatas, Humphrey or trade back in this years draft and improve next years hand.
I think Tsatas goes to bombers and Humphrey to suns.

Saints rumoured to want Mackenzie: I think hawks would take him at 6, reason for the trade
Hawks:6, 41, future 2nd (dogs)
Saints:9, 32, future 1st

Hawks: 48, 50, 52
Lions: 34

2022 Draft : 9, 24, 32, 34, 65
2023 Draft: first rounder (ours and saints), 2nd rounder (ours), 3rd rounder (ours) and 4th rounder (lions)

9. Hollands/Phillipou
24. Brayden George (please slide to us)
32. Isaac Keeler
34. Adam D'Aloia
