I don't think you'd hire Ross Lyon unless you thought he could get a flag out of your squad. He is not the guy for a rebuild.
I agree with this, but he isn’t getting one in 2023 so a 35 year old stop gap forward makes no sense

Oh Kane, you ******* idiot

Given the extended period the Saints now face without a key forward, Cornes said coach Ross Lyon needed to get on the phone to ex-Eagle Josh Kennedy.

“I’ve got a task for one coach, and that is get on the phone and get Josh Kennedy out of retirement and that coach is Ross Lyon,” he said.

“Kennedy, clearly it’s his body and he’s spoken about his debilitating knee injury that he’s got. But if the call hasn’t been made yet, it needs to be made. He kicked 37 goals from 15 games last year.

“Can you imagine if you put him into a decent side, you sold him a really good wage, a prospect of a job after football – you say, ‘you’ll play 12 to 15 games, we’ll manage you’ – the Saints can’t afford to miss the finals.

He’s cooked you dolt. Completely cooked and if he wanted a job after footy he’d already have one either with us or the dockers

Branders the man they need.

Another day, another article by Cornes slamming the Eagles

“I’m not sure what their strategy is”: Uncertainty surrounding 2023 Eagles

I know he’s pretty much saying what others have said and if it came from an Eagles fan I might’ve even agreed a little. So I was wondering why I get so defensive when I read articles like this, or read comments from non eagles fans, when some of it may even be on point (not u Cornes). I came to the conclusion it’s like people criticising your kids. It’s ok if I complain about them myself but I’d defend them against outsiders who criticised them.

By this logic it must mean Eagles fans are one big family as it doesn’t bother me when other fans criticise them
…….. Hmmm nah

The parts he got right were:
  • we were terrible last year and cannot be happy with that
  • we were unfit last year (didn't directly say this, but insinuated it and it is correct)
  • we have retained veterans who are not playing as well as they were (Hurn excluded)

A lot of the rest he got wrong, the main ones being:
  • we are unfit now... a 5 second look at the club's preseason information will show that we look significantly physically better than this time last year
  • the Gaff stuff, yep he had a poor year but doubling down when Healy called it out (i.e. with a full squad he would not have played) was crazy
  • not knowing where we are for 2023, that is miles off the mark. The list is slowly transitioning. Cutting another 3-4 veterans to bring in some more guys through a draft that was historically low on total players taken would have been crazy. We (and other clubs) didn't rate it so much that we redrafted rookies rather than take chances on a couple of guys. We have brought in 11 players (10 of whom are under 20yo) in the past 2 years. That is a quarter of our list (noting we have another 8 still on our list from the 2018-2020 drafts also, plus Connor West who isn't included in the numbers). It's not a lightning fast rebuild, but we also aren't year 1 of the rebuild.

The problem is, he's got his soapbox that he was rightfully standing on last year - and now he refuses to budge off it regardless of the fact that he is no longer correct.

The strategy is quit clear.

Draft young talent, rebuild the midfield and have the older blokes mentor the younger guys so that when they hit 22-25 years of age, they have ingrained, good habits because they had proper mentors who taught them what is necessary to be an elite professional athlete.

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater just reduces you to an absolute rabble for years on end. See Carlton & Melbourne. Hawthorn are going through it, as are the Kangaroos.

Same guy said the Saints should go after JK after Max King got injured lol

Kane Cornes says anything and this board goes off for like 2 pages. King stays King.

West Coast has never had an unsuccessful rebuild so I feel no desire to get defensive at that article :D

Also Kane Cornes not understanding something doesn't make it bad.

Pretty much right?

I get slightly annoyed because his ‘opinion’ doesn’t evolve based on actual evidence and he’s unable to actually say ‘no they should have retired Nic Nat’ or ‘they should have traded Gaff for….(nothing I assume?)’

…and then he’s out there suggesting a middle of the road St Kilda team should lure Josh Kennedy out of retirement - which he pretty obviously was ready for - to fill a gap with Max King missing?

If a guy at the pub said that he’d be laughed out the room and forced to buy the next round.

If you're reading Kornes, he wins. If you get angry about and talk about it and share the article, he wins some more.

He's a troll. Don't feed him.

I don't completely subscribe to this train of thought. A jester does his job when people laugh and mock him - Cornes may be a clown but that's not his intention. Sure he likes to throw shock jock level grabs out there but I'm pretty sure he's doing it without any intentional sarcasm - yes, he says stuff for attention but fairly certain he believes what he says.

In the end I stopped reading any of his articles long ago, but I don't think he's 'winning' if people point out that he's an idiot.
