Isaac Quaynor injury

figjam named the young man at his presser, only a week ago he put his ego before the competition to play tennis.

Considering you can’t be arsed to watch a presser available on the AFL app, I’ve made it simple enough so maybe even you can understand it.

From the 3.30min mark of a 10 min presser -
“Isaac actually tackled a kid who we think , his studs sort of raked across his shin - and actually split his shin, um, 6,8 inches - um completely open, so um it’s bad luck. The kid could have had um metal studs in as well so that was his bad luck, tackling the only kid that had that but um that will be a couple of weeks, it will depend on how you will clean the wound and heal that up”

8min 50 mark, Jay Clark goes back to the issue and asks “was that the studs of the opposition player that’s cut him open?”

Buckley’s reply “yeah we believe that that’s happened, but I mean, I’m, some of our boys were talking to me about what type of studs they were. But in the end it’s just, bad luck. But I mean, I haven’t heard of that happening in all my time in footy. Um pretty sure studs pierced the skin. Even Will (referring you Hoskin Elliotts injury) had an element of that

Jay Clark again - you aren’t allowed to wear metal studs are you?

Buckley - yeah yeah I don’t believe so, in the end, we don’t get them checked, um, it’s not under 12’s where there umpire comes and checks all your studs before you come and play.

End of presser.

- didn’t name the player
- referred to it as bad luck

And you call that crucifying?

Cheers mate ,obviously im wrong. I only put my opinion forward after listening too it.

Does anyone else think it looks like his shin his something in the turf? It appears to jerk when he's sliding along..

Looking at that video I just can't see how the studs caused a 20cm gash that deep. Perhaps his leg got opened up by a stud and the pressure of him hitting and sliding his shin on the ground opened it up further?

A really strange, freak accident.

You can’t have listened to it though.

Look, I get it, you want to sink the boots in on Bucks (pardon the pun on this one). But don’t lie - your tennis jibe was cute though. Half a point.

Mate i watched it live last night and had quite a few bevies so i posted what i thought at the time and probably my thoughts were clouded by how smug figjam is and what he did last week.
All good mate we live and learn.

Why don’t you just take the L and move on? Instead have to keep pretending you watched it. Weird.

They may be required to, but that doesn’t mean that they do necessarily. Rugby players do not and metal studs are widespread/compulsory. If this was the studs, it is a freak injury. I’ve played and watched multiple codes and never seen anything like it.
Oh yeah I'm not saying it wasn't a freak accident. There's just no real need for them in the AFL anyway.

Thanks for that. It looks like material is the only thing that is specified in regards to stud safety in the regulations and any non-metal stud design is deemed to be inherently safe until, I guess, an umpire has an issue.

Also, the laws of the game state that all boot studs are prohibited unless they have been inspected and deemed safe (Based on their own interpretation) by the umpires.

I don't know if I'm happy about no fine/punishment now that it happens the boots are non-conforming. I still have no hard feelings towards Wicks, but surely something?

I know the AFL hadn't enforced it and many players have been using them, but on the other hand it's like getting pulled over for drink driving and saying "yeah but everyone left that party drunk and I've never seen a cop on this road before"

The AFL has been put in an awkward position here.

Does anyone know if the document that outlines the prohibited items (bobby pins, hair band colours, metal stops etc.) is available? I'm guessing it's an AFL league specific rulebook (not available to the public) rather than somthing you would find in the Laws of Australian Rules Football.
Probably hitting the docklands drive printer now

Perhaps the young lad got his boots out the box and put them straight on? How many of us have gone around with new clothes on with tags and stuff still attached? You could assume that within the professional sporting world, equipment made available to players comes ready for play and legal?

Footballers take notice of their boots. You a being a bit of a campaigner asserting its like a shirt or socks that you just throw on.
Screw ins have been plastic for years.

I've played soccer and aussie rules and I will tell you now at local level soccer was a lot stricter on this than footy, they would actually look at your boots. Metal studs in soccer a big no no.

you can wear them in more senior levels of soccer. That’s why the boot is manufactured - it’s not to meet AFL demand

Nah everyone looks for excuses when they clearly done the wrong thing. He isn't a kid. A grown adult can make the right choices and make sure he isn't doing anything illegal. If he didn't look at his boot then a few games suspension should make him take more responsiblilty. Also the club should be made to pay aswell. Negligence. That's or there is too it.

This. Sometimes punishments exist to prevent negligence and promote being responsible as much as for punishing deliberate wrong doing.
