I think he will be a better midfielder than Rankine, yes.
I think Rankine will be the more damaging player.
Wherever either player plays Rankine will always be the most talented and more damaging, that's not even debatable and that's not a sleight on Soligo who looks every bit an excellent 200 game player.

Soligo giving off Kane Johnson vibes to me..will just become a very polished smooth moving user of the ball

No doubting Rankine is a good player. But if our midfield can't win big finals the question will always be there. Jury is still out on that
If our midfield can’t win big finals it still won’t have much to do with the rankine who we gave up 1x pick for

We didn’t trade the last 10 years of draft picks for rankine

And you won’t be able to cherry pick the 2022 draft and say ‘see midfielder x from that draft would have made us win finals we couldn’t win ‘

I reckon you’ve gone too early here. That 2017 forward line is the best in the clubs history, with the runs on the board. I’m not saying this group can’t get to their lofty standards. But they aren’t there yet.

Not only best in clubs history, but one if the best the league had seen in its history.

It's what, 2nd in average points per game behind Geelong '92 side?

Pretty much. The key to winning shit is elite talent and Rankine is that with a capital E.

If we don't win it all, it'll be on the players we put around him.

All the MID's we've drafted, have the correct Finals temperament .....can't see any of them buckling under Finals expectation .....in fact, I think they'll lap it up

Particularly my boy Pedlar ....Rankine, and Soligo

IMHO this is one of the best squads this club has assembled ....look at other Finals sides, and we've relied on a handful of Superstars ....this squad is far more even

Still, imagine if the club had got creative like our neighbours down the road and not only traded for Rankine BUT also manoeuvred ourselves to draft Phillipou. With where we are at now, having an emerging mid like him would have really put us in a sweet spot

I’m not sure we are talking about the same guy …
Ooops .....in my defence, I have CoVid ....so the mind is rattled

I meant, Shaun Higgins .....250+ games, All-Australian .....if it weren't for all his injuries, what could have been

Made me curious, so I checked.

Crows 2017 average (minor round) score = 109.77

Crows 2022 = 78.23

Crows 2023 to date = 88.82
- so, a little way to go :)

But 109.77 in 2017, that is outstanding...

It will be one of the great shames, if Rankine doesn't end up 70/30 Mid/Fwd ...
It’s an interesting one and I’m not sure I’d go so far as to agree with that.

We did talk about him as being a mid when we brought him in and in PS, but have barely seen it since the PS where he did have CBAs and it looked like he and Rach would basically rotate.

I wonder why that is?

Perhaps his loss of CBAs correlates with Dawsons move and we don’t feel we need him at CBAs for the balance and adding that dynamic player. If Dawson were to miss games I reckon that’s when we see him in CBAs more?

I feel like others have suggested we’re happy to play him in that high half forward role and him basically be a forward half mid rather than feeling we need him at CBAs. The role itself probably doesn’t change aside from actual CBA.

Having said that there was a bit of fools Gold there …. Remember how our forward line went in the granny ?

There were signs we were too reliant on slick ball movement and transition rather than being able to win contests

And it was shown up on GF day
