Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand

I can tell she's doing a good job - in brutally hard circumstances - simply from the objectors on BF and the other realms of my online world. :thumbsu:
I think she should have just said, 'thoughts and prayers' (not really) then moved on to the next news cycle like Trump does.
Then they would be happy.
.

It isn't necessarily, but the "speed" at which they acted which is being hailed as good governance is anything but its not as though banning it today as opposed to in a months time or 3 months time is going to be the difference between another mass shooting or not in NZ.

No you are the woke one who came in and declared anyone who disagrees with Ardern a Nazi sympathizer as per my post, keep up.
They banned it quickly so you didnt get stockpiling of the weopans which would make the ban pointless. I agree time is often best to use to make most important decisions to makesure you do it right. But in some cases taking time makes the action less effective. And this is one of those times. Its also not like this issue hasnt been debated numerous times before. Everyone already knows the pros and cons of different approaches.

Fair argument but the action is not going to be overly effective. The people who want to keep their guns will hide them, you don't need 20 guns to shoot a bunch of people. This wont make any difference in terms of overall safety, people who want them will still get them and mass shootings aren't common enough to be a genuine reason for a ban like this.

Gees they are broadcasting a call to prayer across the country. That might be going a tad bit far.

Agreed, as expected they are losing the plot in their mad rush to virtue signal to each other how good they are and the result will be

v

That will only rile certain elements of society.

Agreed

Not that it matters to them, it's their country, but if for instance, Julia Gillard was still Prime Minister, I really wouldn't be happy if if she were wearing a headscarf / hijab. I see today they've organised Headscarf for Harmony day over there. The virtue signalling is going over the top.

If the massacre had taken place in a Catholic / Christian church, would the Muslim community be happy for their women to have a No Headscarf for Harmony day?

If it had taken place in a convent, would we expect a female leader to attend sporting a habit?

I really understand that they want to show solidarity and stand together, but I don't think this is a good way to do it.

Just be yourselves, no matter what walk of life you're from.

To all extents and purposes it seemed to be a good thing, what happened in nz today. Mutual respect from both sides. Who knows, it might have helped some people from both sides to stop the hating.

The actions of Ardern and the NZ govt have calmed the situation as best they can. And at the same time they've done something legislature wise that should've been done years ago and banned automatic weapons. The last thing you want is a community witch hunt and vigilantism. You also don't want the bad guy(s) winning. In this case you want to be able to say 'Go to the mosque Saturday, Sunday, any day you want. You are safe' not 'All Muslims are in danger. Do not leave home unless you are going to the airport to fly to Saudi Arabia'.

Beyond the local events in NZ, I don't think this tragedy will have much of an effect overall. According to ever reliable Wiki, there have been 122 terrorist incidents in March. Barely a handful were in the west. More people have been killed since the Christchurch shooting than were killed in it. Let that sink in!

its common for faiths to have rules and dress codes to enter their houses of worship

hundreds of people get rejected from entering the vatican or the many churches in rome (as tourists) because of improper dress (both sexes cannot wear shorts, tank tops or the like, or any headwear)

Buddhists are the similar for clothing (no shorts, tank tops), but also prohibit anyone who has recently had sex, is pregnant, or is having their period

Don't let it worry you. Interesting not a word is said when female politicians or high profile females visit the Vatican and wear a scarf.

Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump, who is the president's daughter and special assistant, both donned head coverings Wednesday as they met with Francis. "Per Vatican protocol, women who have an audience with the Pope are required to wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil to cover the head," first lady spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham

I think it is called something like 'respect'. Something that seems alien to some posters more so when it is a strong female.

Just feel sorry for them.

Its pretty cringeworthy when any politician dons the outfit of another culture or even class say (high vis ) perhaps unless they are required to for the situation.

If a religion that demands covering doesn't do the same thing as agnostics that don't feel one way or the other, after a time of crisis that has rarely been seen in the country before, that is virtue signalling?

Remember when you called her a horse?

Yep, I called her that several times in these threads. So what?

Can I go through your posting history to see if you've ever called anyone a name, or likened them to something or someone else?

There may or may not come a time in the future when an outrage such as this happens to the non Muslims of New Zealand. What happens if there's an expectation that Muslim women remove their headscarves for a day as a show of support of solidarity and harmony and they refuse?

It's just a possible foundation to create resentment in the future when there doesn't need to be.

Be yourselves.

So maybe your judgement is skewed due to your physical dislike for this person?
Or maybe you have a physical dislike for this person because you have opposing ideologies?...
Why wouldn't it have some significance?

"Yep officer, I was speeding, so what?"

And it would be guaranteed that divisive nutjobs would push that message to trick people into not understanding the issue, and create a greater divide.

Wearing a headscarf to show support for a community, is the same as wearing a Poppy, or a badge. It shows you're in support.
If a tragedy occurred in a nudist colony, you wouldn't demand politicians wear nothing, as a sign of solidarity... so why demand a headscarf removal??

Vactican City is a country, if that's their custom and expectation, then so be it. It is a Monarchy with the Pope as their head.

100% no problems donning a headscarf in any country where it is their custom, whether that be the Middle East, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vatican City, where ever.

It's not custom in NZ and as the leader of that country, I just don't think she should have done it. If they had a male Prime Minister, what would have been the expectation on him? Take his shoes off which is what you do when you walk into a lot of peoples' homes anyway.

'You wear a hijab, I don't wear one, but we are still one and I'll stand with you. We are different but we are the same'

Why do people think she has handled herself so well? This is a Wedding thank you speech you can't go wrong with constant appeasement, "woe is us", sad face and thoughts and prayers nonsense especially when the media casts you as a saint when you do it. Meanwhile they are gutting their gun laws and completely overreacting on free speech, censoring alternate opinions and anyone who disagrees is a nazi sympathizer.

Handled well? No this is a debacle and I am so grateful she isn't PM here.
What do you mean gutting gun laws? I’m always happy to remove guns from the populace. Probably because I cannot shoot to save my life so in my interests others cannot.
