You dont need to continue to bank cap space as you could always restructure contracts to pay players more in that year than the following years
every club has players who have contracts to extend every year just front end their contracts.

Or ... wait for it, this is groundbreaking ... or ... you could use cap space that was purposely set aside to recruit targeted senior players ... to recruit a targeted senior player.

From what i have seen, the kid that is ranked as the best 15/16 year old is rarely taken at number 1 in the draft as there is so much development that goes on in the next few years of football. Sure those kids are still in the academy programme and get drafted, but not all go on to be the best of their draft. This is the issue for Martin and the others kids taken in the 17 year old mini-drafts - they are drafted more on reputation that output. I don't see Martin, Hogan, Crouch or O'Meara (who was probably the most likely) as kids that would have been a certainty to go at number 1 in the draft had they played another year.

GCS appear to be being pig headed in what they wanted for Martin because of his reputation as a 15/16 year old. If they want to take a stance and get nothing for him, (or worse) redraft him when he doesn't want to be there, then that is their choice. But this hard line stance is all bluster and wind when they let Ah Chee (a similar talent to Martin), go to the cross town rival for less than they were offered for Martin. It's not a line in the sand .... it's hypocrisy!

tbf Hogan won Caseys VFL b&f as a 17 year old so I would say there would have been a massive chance of him going as the number 1 pick in 2013

Elmer Judd keeps stalking me, even into other threads (clearly subconsciously worried). Just giving a bit back.
Since the first day post the trade period, you have been so personally invested in the idea that Carlton should not and will not get Martin. I recall a huge post you wrote and copied and pasted into multiple threads begging Melbourne to take Martin, all of which has been refuted in the media and by Melbourne themselves.

Yet here you are, on the big footy front lines, going toe to toe with Carlton fans about whether gold coast would and should redraft a player who is entitled to leave that pathetic football club. This can gone beyond a simple want of a footballer for you as it was in those early days. This has become an anti Carlton obsession. I feel for you. Must be exhausting

Actually, after all the blowing from the Blues fans, I hope he gets there.

Great kid. He was a super little Claremont boy who didn't ask for this. FMD Now he's a 1m man.

Just wants to play footy guys. Give him a break. I hope SOS knows what he's doing.
In what way? in deciding to draft him into the CFC in first place? or in proposing to pay him a similar figure to what he’s supposedly been on at GCS? or in agreeing to structure his GCS like payment so that it’s front loaded?

I am ready to admit i was wrong and apologize to you personally if the Suns or Dees take Martin in the PSD.

I also might have been a bit OTT in some of my responses to you, and for that i do apologize, for that.

I get your point about the Suns making a stand on players being poached, but taking my Carlton hat off, I think it will create an unhealthy environment next year in the playing group.

Elmer I know you are a passionate fan, just like me. No offence taken all in good fun. If I am wrong I will make good on my pledge to disappear and will wish Jack Martin a long and distinguished career in the navy blue. If not ... please indulge me one or two gloating posts!

So if you’re wrong you’ll just disappear and if you’re right you’ll stick around and gloat? Lol.

Not at all. I actually don’t discount the Demons from taking Martin in the PSD if the Suns don’t. Melbourne has not publicly ruled itself out to my knowledge. That’s pure assumption by you.

It’s not me who’s obsessed. I merely posited a theory on the Suns being set to re-draft Martin and then was hounded from six different angles by Carlton supporting posters who just didn’t want to hear it. Some of them asked me questions and tried to poke holes in my reasoning - so I answered. End of.

Looks like you missed the conversation

What’s to miss? A poster suggested using cap space specifically set aside for a trade target, on a trade target, would be a waste of cap space. Which is nonsense. Carlton have banked cap they must use; front loading does nothing but delay the inevitable recruitment of a genuine trade target, which is the phase their rebuild has moved into.

Landing their target by conceding a portion of ample cap space while holding on to scarce recruiting currency is a perfect result for where Carlton are at.

You missed the initial part where carlton supporter mentions (jeramea) i think it was that you would lose the cap $$$ saved in previous years, I just mentioned no clubs actually lose it and they just restructure the players contracts accordingly.

The initial part was before that. J’s post was a reply. That you’ve chosen to involve yourself at a certain point doesn’t make that point the start of the conversation.

Deploying use it lose it cap space to secure a genuinely chased after player is hardly a waste.

Considering thats where i have chosen to involve myself perhaps comment on that.

fact of the matter is that if any club has accumulated cap space they will not let it go to waste

You're right but it sucks. Why can't bottom 4 clubs like The Suns and Carlton bank thAt spare cap space for next season to try and lure a big name player/free agent?

draft him into the CFC in first place?
He wasn't drafted to Carlton
to pay him a similar figure
1m isn't similar.

I just hope SOS knows what he's doing. There's a kid in the middle of this tug-o-war dick-swinging contest. If Jack walks away from footy, I wouldn't begrudge him. Posturing is fine, but he's a likeable country lad who didn't ask for this. This has player welfare issues written all over it wouldn't you agree?

If total sum is approx 3 mil over 5 years it averages at approx 600 p/y. Simple.
What welfare issues?

Fair call. I look forward to James Munro being taken at #1 this year. ;)
no idea who he is, but I assume he won a VFL b&f in 2018? maybe Carltons affiliate?

Carlton would be using cap space they must use to secure a player they’re genuinely after. Whether or not they could bank that again with restructured contracts is redundant. They’ve clearly planned that a decent slice of their cap be set aside for targeting senior players within a certain age bracket and that’s exactly what they’re doing here.
