With 2 years till FA it would be a change from the norm to see a player leave before then.

Thats true ... GWS have done very well to keep them till they want to move them on ..and get good value from their trade.

I wonder how much some contracts may restrict you. On what I have seen Hopper looks super appealing but Green is like a player that you build an era around. If ever there is a player you give the Kelly contract to ..its Green. Just how much cap space do you have to keep Hopper

To be honest, really worried the club is thinking we don’t have to worry too much about Hopper as we have Green, Taranto etc going forward and we want to keep Kelly.

I’ve always been one to want to keep the locals and give them more leeway than the out of Towner a due to homegrown stars build clubs.

We are doing well so far, though we need more players coming from Western Sydney, but it’s a fine line.

I tend to not like super long contracts.. but id offer Green one... when "journos' like CW mention Green due to links to Rich then you need to be vigilant. The thing is things change quick. If Colliglio was RFA this year , im not convinced GWS would go as hard as they did last year with JC. Moving him would allow you to put money into youth.

The local thing is something I probably cant relate to exactly ..in the way you do... but we have our version of it. Probably just as SA teams do and WA teams do. Melb kids probably dream of the G and Anzac day etc, our experience is a variation on that, but not exactly that. Its whywe do tend to look hard at locals. I think most non Melb clubs do. If Cerra moves at years end, GFReo will be wondering why didn't they draft Naughton. for eg. Around 2000 , Geelong was building and not a destination club, and they decided if the talent was rel equal they would go local, it saw a lot of Falcons drafted.... so I can understand supporting your local product. Just how local is local..that I cant judge. Someone like Jack Henry at Geelong lived within walking distance of KP for eg. but we have lost several 'locals' and seen several 'locals' return. In the end I think if the clubs experience is a good one , local or not , they probably stay. We have several champs from WA for eg ..Corey and Duncan just to name two.

Anyway. Hopper would love him at Geelong if he wants to move. OOC players ..its just what they want most of the time. Would suit our needs and we like players who have shown they are Pnp. Cost would be significant no doubt.

Id say our Fr1, R2 and probably a player of some sort considering none of the picks would be early.

Kelly can accept a different deal which the club is likely negotiating on. I would say the Toby Greene extension was to bring his total payments per year down. People tend to think Haynes and Whitfield are on massive $$. As good as both are, they love the lifestyle and I would be confident they took far less than they could get from a Melb based club. Ward and Davis are at the twighlight of their careers and have had their paydays. Cogs is a big deal, no doubt. Other than those we don't have any that stand out to me as being huge contracts. 2022 we need to re-sign some good players in the age bracket we want to keep in Taylor, Taranto, Perryman, Cumming as well as few that emerged this year in Idun, Buckley, Briggs, the last 2 should be straight forward. If Hopper wants to stay in Sydney I would think we could easily accomadate him.

For this reason, I wouldn’t be surprised if they let Kelly walk this year. Green, Hopper, Taranto, other young budding stars is a Midfield worth every bit of the entrance fee.

Maybe even worth shopping the Skipper to Fremantle or Wet Toast to see what you may be able to shake. If Cerra on the way out, he would compliment the Trio well moving forward.

We aren’t shopping the skipper. No chance in hell.
I doubt we are “shopping” anyone.

We lost a fair bit of talent, expensive talent, last year that the Kelly deal would be a part of.
We have space so there will be no fire sales.

But we need to be smart with Green and a few others coming through our ranks.

If a team was silly enough to offer to take Cogs and his contract for free, GWS wouldn't be able to sign fast enough. The midfield clearly functions better without him in it.

If you want to be smart with Green, don't play Cogs in his position again.

I think it would be a Treloar type deal to trade him.I cant imagine GWS paying half his contract for the next 6 years or how ever long his contract is..while he plays for someone else.

Is that situation not better than paying what now seems close to a depth player close $1m a year? That’s a crippling salary at the moment.

GWS have no lack of young talent, think they’d be better off biting the bullet with Cogs so it helps keep the elite young talent like Hopper that needs to get paid

Ouch though. Contracted till he is 32 I think. If they can the sign Green long term... you might be correct.

He was huge today for gws. Nearly got them over the line. He is their best mid
Think GWS's optimal midfield set up is easily Hopper - Green - Kelly.

De Boar has fallen off a cliff. Taranto is a nothing player, I personally wouldn't pay anywhere close to a 1st round pick for him. And when I raised Taranto being one of the worst kicks in the game, quite a few people disagreed which is looking a bit funny atm. Ward I rate to some degree, Cogs is a defensive liability.

For some reason the midfielders at GWS develop some really terrible habits, mostly to do with kicking efficiency (Taranto, Adams, Treloar, Shiel, Conigilio). And while some improve after switching to a new club (Steele, Adams), most do not. GWS needs to stop trying to fit 12 midfielders in their best 22 week in week out, just not working.

Adams is the biggest butcher of all ... he’s learnt not from his time at the pies

Hawthorn desperately need this bloke.

O'meara is barely a B grader these days, and Worpel is just about the worst inside mid in the comp atm, and somehow both are in their primary midfield rotation alongside Mitchell. I wouldn't take Worpel on a 100k salary and for 0 trade asset, does not deserve a list spot in the AFL.

No surprise Hawks has been one of the worst clearance teams in the comp in the last 2 years.

I thought he got torn a new one yesterday at pivotal times by Parker/Kennedy but is having a fine season.

The problem is that Hopper-Ward-Taranto-Coniglio and Green are all extremely similar. You would ideally want to keep Hopper and trade one of Taranto (having a woeful last year and a half) or Coniglio but neither is out of contract and Jacob is. Hmmmmmm

Yet on the weekend pretty much matched Melbourne when we had a ruckman in his 3rd game.

We also smashed the Swans about 5 weeks ago. And GWS a couple of weeks after that.

Hopper would be great though. But probably not at the price GWS would demand.
