Hey, don’t forget about pick 45!
Usually I'd say weight of numbers always outweighs the singular player. Masten and Kennedy got us a premiership after Judd retired.
But Owies and Baker will be gone by the time Jaggar hits his prime...if 45 is a hit THEN it'll be a discussion.

I think Smith will be a bust personally. He may well make a serviceable player but I personally just don't rate him. He's had a full year preparing for and training like an AFL player and he's still small, stick thin and a dead average kick.
He is slippery however and gets a **** load of the ball for someone his size.

I can't stand the argument that dismisses players who won't be there when we're next a contender. As if the building and developing years don't matter.
When the likes of Yeo, Kelly, Gov, Cripps, Hunt, Sheed, etc, retire, there will be a void of senior players to support the development of our crop of young players. We've gone some way to mitigating that impact.
We're banking on making 15 players 10% better rather than having one player who is 20% better. That would make it worthwhile even if those 3 never play in a preliminary final.
Whether it pans out that way is a different matter, but it's a legitimate strategy.

The issue was, is and always will be what we paid for baker.
If the original plan was to trade in Warner and 19 and then send 19 to Richmond why did we just drop our pants and give Richmond a 5 pick upgrade for free instead of asking for an upgrade through a swap of seconds?
We could have held 14 and taken norths F1 instead we’ve taken a pick 2 and pick 3 and used the currency from those picks by using picks 8, 12 and 14 for three half back flankers over the past three years, none of whom which I would consider their disposal elite and that’s in addition to Duggan and Chesser. That’s after the club attributing part of the reason for being in the position it is, to the inability to access top draft talent and having to take predominantly half backs at picks in the mid teens.
As it’s played out this draft looks like it will be a good opportunity to put some key pieces in place with some later picks before we truely fix our midfield, as we all want to, next year.

If Bo Allen was always our target which it seems very likely now.. I congratulate our recruiting team on not being linked to Allen while laying a trail to Hotten , Reid and Berry ..

It isnt one or the other also. The actual issue we made is delaying our picks to next year and then actually taking Baker to begin with
The way id have done this is simple
Barrass + F3rd for Pick 14 + F2nd
We dont bother with Owies cos we dont need him. We simply make Riley Garcia a impossible to refuse offer with the money we have not bothering with Liam Baker + Matt Owies. Give Doggies a crummy offer cos we can use cash on someone else like Owies as a backup anyway. Instead of Liam Baker we take Jaxon Prior as DFA. We take Jack Graham as FA.
2 x F2nds + 58 for pick 29 + Garcia
Leaves us with 3,14,29,30, 33
3 - Jagga Smith
14 - Bo Allan
29 - Jobe Shannahan
30 - Christian Moraes
And then for experienced players we take Garcia, Graham, Prior
Next year we are down to
1st + 4th + 5th only as picks.
Am happy to go in with low currency knowing we will target Chad Warner + also have Charlie Banfield as a F/S pickup beyond our 1st rounder. Split 1st if needed too
