Posters questioning Jaidyn's ability to kick need to watch a little more of him play. He is a very good kick and I would say an elite kick when around goal. Watch the all stars game if you have any concerns to start with.

I agree with this. I was a bit concerned over his kicking on the first set of highlights I saw, but have seen more and feel much more comfortable. He’ll do a lot of damage in our forward half

The only knock I've really heard on his kicking was to do with his style and how it looked, if it works let sleeping dogs lay I say. I just worry we may try and tweak it which might do more harm than good.

think about it.....hes going to be coached and worked on with his kicking...u dont think someone like pendlebury will get around him on this...hes not a bad kick now but can get better and will.....have some faith
The unfortunate thing is,none of our poor kicks have ever really improved. It’s why we have terrible kicking skills. Even the kids we draft who are rated as a good kick seem to go backwards with us. Hope this isn’t the case with Jaidyn.

I could never see any evidence of effective intervention in Cloke's set shot kicking action, which when you broke it down... well it was amazing he kicked as many goals as he did

He kicked more goals than points from 2011 onwards.

Never mind the bullocks about kicking this is the Stephenson pistols

it wasn't his kicking action that was the problem

It was a bit of the opposite for me. I watched the all star game and the champs and didn't have too much concern, not the most fluent technique, but pretty effective. Then i did watch a little more of him with the TAC cup clips i posted, and he barely hit a target for the whole video.
I'm a tad concerned because the kid looks like a freak and i love everything else about him, i just don't want him to be the kind of player that does so much great work then can't finish the last bit. Still excited though.

The highlights I’ve seen of him show quite a few turnovers. And that’s the highlights, how many rank turnovers are they not showing. Plus his kicking is quite a deliberate style, very slow release and the ball looks to float very slowly to its target. He’s no Buckley bullet pass.

Under AFL pressure and speed I’ve got a fair bit of concern. It’s not like we are good users of the footy and any deficiencies of his can be covered by others.

Another awful decision by the club. When you are a top 4 team, there's room for the 'left-field' call. When you are a perpetually declining team like ours, you take the best available. He's got a f*cking heart condition for absolute f*ck's sake.

We are completely screwed with these clowns running the show.

"Heart condition" is a very loose term. What he has will not affect him provided he keeps up with his medication and healthy lifestyle. Which I have no doubts that he will.

All his specialists and the club doctors would have signed off on this as well, giving him the all clear.

I can tell you now that if Jaidyn fails to make it as a player, it won't be as a result of his "Heart Condition"

Bump this in 10 years if you will.

Still had some truly horrible misses - this is not primarily a criticism of Cloke - over his time with us I think more could have been done to actually improve his goal kicking
Edit: he was paid a big salary, one KPI was to kick goals - his conversion rate was significantly below McKenna, Dunstall, Lockett, Sav Rocca .... anyway he seems very content with fatherhood so good luck Travis

Very harsh on the kid - the medical condition is not his fault - according to Hine the club consulted specialists from around the world before deciding to take him

He does say in his interview that the condition is still not diagnosed. I don't quite see that this equates with an all clear. Other clubs ruled out taking him. We need a KPP and didn't get one at either pick. We gambled but hopefully won't lose. But in retrospect I am not so convinced by our selections as I was immediately after the draft.

He has a heart condition that will have no affect on his performance or pose no danger to his health. Not much of a risk. I believe he tested top 10 for both the 2km time trial and 20 meter sprint.

Most kids' kicking skills go backwards when they get into the AFL. That happens at every club. Higher pressure levels and greater fatigue from more significant stamina drain in a faster paced league.

Taylor Adams is a notable one whose skills have definitively improved since coming to the club. Alan Toovey was another who found a way to be less problematic with his kicking over time - He didn't get better technically, really, but mostly learned how to pick safer options. Strategy can make a difference too. Ben Johnson and to a lesser extent, Heritier Lumumba over their time with us, were never good kicks, but learned that if they used their pace and sent it long to dangerous areas, the team would benefit.

As someone has already mentioned, Dangerfield and Fyfe still aren't particularly good field kicks, and Chris Judd never really was either, but they all went alright.

Yes he did say this in that interview with that Ralph idiot but I think the kid just got his terminology wrong. I would say that there is no doubt that his condition has been diagnosed what I think he meant to say is that they don't know what "caused" the condition i.e. genetics, virus etc etc.

That was my take on it.

He has been rated top 5 all year, so hardly a 'left-field' decision. He was actually 'best-available'. He is a risk given he has a medical issue, but on talent and form he was clearly best available.

I wanted a KPP this draft, but there really wasn't one worthy of our pick 6. Naughton was the only one, but comes with huge knocks on his kicking. Fogarty was the other, but plays more a utility than a Key Tall. His future is probably midfield.

This guy was the best available pick. The only question mark is the heart issue.

Irrespective of any issue Stephenson was the best available talent left on our board at 6 (Talk we had him at 4 on our draft rankings). Most pundits had him top 3-5 on talent and x-factor. Kevin Sheehan thought he was the best player in the draft pool. Well worth the risk in hindsight after getting Murphy with a 3rd rounder.

So as a combination of our first two picks we landed two guys we rated in the best 10 in the draft. You seem hard to please.

Just out of interest who would you have picked at 6 with who was left?

Thanks Dr Lovelace.
