I think the sacking might be a bit of a hint. I think he's gone down because one minute we were rebuilding, then topping up, then recruiting youth again. Misreading where the list was at cost him his job. He wasn't the worst we've had by any stretch but he wasn't getting it right.
Yeah agree 100%

Blaming the entire list build without factoring the directive from the club (which nobody seems to have done) is odd I would've thought.

No idea if Gallagher was good enough or not, think it's all just guesswork.

A strong list manager tells them where the club is at though. The club can request whatever they want but he should have been better at explaining the plan and why the direction wasn't right long term.

In his defence.

The entire afl world thought we were a very promising prospect post 2020

So that makes him qualified to be a list manager of a football club in a multi billion dollar industry,
I don't have an opinion on it one way or another if you have been following the conversation

I don't believe the list manager is the one being tasked with calling all the shots, apparently Lethers was the one bringing Hanners in wasn't he?

I would argue the club would have a directive. The list manager isn't the coach and so the coach and coaches would want to build a gameplan around certain players and so the list managers role (in part) is to make that happen. Nobody knows if the directive of the club was to bring in experienced players or not. I would argue that the coaches would share blame in the direction of the list.

After nearly a decade away from finals, I’d imagine the club would have green lit an injection of experience at other clubs at the cost of some talent and picks.

$$$$ would have been at play

100%, I get ultimately it falls on the list manager as it does for the head coach but without knowing anything it's hard to say for sure. I suspect he was doing what the club asked of him and that now working interstate was not going to cut it from the clubs perspective.

To me list management is more about finances than anything else. It's the scouts job to identify talent and the coaches job to request talent IMO

The difference is that they were looking at the club from outside and getting promising vibes. 2020 was a completely unreadable season and not one you really want to base your whole future strategy around. The list manager should be responsible for the direction of the list including being the architect of a premiership ready side while keeping age profiles and missing pieces covered. Also managing the salaries to make sure that you can fit in the required players.

I think topping up was a desperate act designed to sugar-hit the fans rather than actually making us closer to a premiership. To me we looked like we were acting to act like things were going forward rather than actually planning for a long term premiership build.

Basically the strategic planning was probably his weakest point. He seemed good at the financial stuff but flip-flopped too much.

SOS lived in Vic when working for GWS as well
Nobody could have messed up the GWS list build with all the talent they had available to them.
Didn't love his drafting at Carlton though.

I do remember you saying that you were worried that the prevailing strategy several years ago was designed to keep us competitive but not designed to win us a premiership it seems you were right. Now it seems there's hope!

He gave it his best to mess it up!

Keep him away from drafting!

2: O’Rourke
3: Tyson, Plowman, Dow
4: Jarrod Pickett
5: Buntine, WHE
6: SPS
7: Ahern
10: Sumner, O’Brien
12: Jaksch

That’s some of the use of top picks in his time at the two clubs! 🤮

I think he's done a fantastic job. Look at our list now compared to when he walked in. The only blemishes are Hill and Hanners, but i think those deals were already under way before he was officially brought in IIRC.

He has nailed the last two drafts, and in a half decade or so we may be looking back in them of the drafts that turned this club around.
