Is there any danger of our coaching staff responding to our weakness and altering our game plan to suit our players?

There has literally been no suggestion of this so far.

I agree with what I think you're trying to say.

I will say it's looking more each day like we've got our list management pretty right so far .. it is indeed up to the coaching staff to show they are up to it now. Now this will take time, yes, but we'll need to see some strong (if inconsistent) evidence of it coming together this year.

IN:Lob,Kennedy,Fasolo,Krez
OUT:polson,Gartlett,Schu,Lobbe

I'd persist with Garlett - sure he needs to clean up his disposal but he runs hard to provide an option going forward, links up well in plays, puts on good defensive pressure, tackles well and can find the ball. Has potential in the position imo.

Thursday was the first time I actually thought this might be happening

Need to see the same intent vs Collingwood though

As for inclusions, like ITCHY EYEBALLS I would elevate O'Brien, Kennedy and Stocker

What I would also trial for a half, is either swapping Walsh with Garlett, or at the very least playing Walsh as a defensive wingman.

Think he would add some great run and carry and decision making out of the back half.

Garlett is more attacking and could be dangerous breaking inside 50
Putting your star midfield recruit in the back line is how we stalled the progress and celling of Bryce Gibbs's career

I liked the balance of our backline on Thursday. Two main talls in Jones and Weitering, a mid size in Plowman and three smaller types in Simmo, Newman and Garlett. I don't rate Plowman though at all and I would replace him with Jack based on who is currently available. Jack's movement appeared better on Thursday night but I just don't think we're going to get enough out of him as a forward or in the middle to sustain his career, so the backline beckons as his chance. He's a decent kick and will give it everything. I thought Garlett was good and was prepared to be aggressive so he should stay. He has a lot of potential if he hits his straps.

Cam Polson can't be retained based on output so far. We need to try Fasolo, if available. The forward line mix of Harry, Charlie, Gov, Gibbo, Dave and Fasolo seems about right to me. I would play Ed Curnow as our prime tagger in the middle. He's made for that role. He has tremendous endurance and the ability to get the ball going our way. Just has to give the ball quickly to better ball users when he gets it.

No need to rush Kreuze back as Phillips is more than adequate cover. I would drop Schu for Lochie Obrien and possibly give Levi a go instead of Lobbe. I still believe that 2nd ruck is Levi's best spot. Has more ability to take a mark in contested situations than Lobbe and on a good day he might kick a goal or two. His field kicking is good enough. Matt Kennedy didn't do enough in the 2's. For what we're wanting him to be, he needs to dominate at the lower level and earn it. Will Setterfield looks to be his main threat now and Will already looks like a classier option and clearly has more pace.

We're in a good place right now with players showing some good form and its great to be able to discuss options about what our best side looks like rather than being stuck with the same group of players with limited options to replace or rushing underdone players back into the team. Competition for spots will drive success. Looking forward to this season. More than I have in a while.

Personally I think we will achieve both, but they are not exclusive.

Our kids are developing well, despite people believing it should be linear.

While a more simplistic game plan would make us more consistent, it would stagnate the side and our future sustained success, by being mediocre
Hawthorn had a very simplistic gameplan for years or at least one that everybody knew but they were so good at it that nobody could stop it .
So I don't necessarily agree with you here also I believe an independent audit was done on the club last season by an independent person [who I can't remember] and weren't the recommendations to strip things back a little because of a little bit of information overload .
Which may or may not tie in with what rp84 is alluding to regarding gameplan .

I don't disagree, I have always said you don't need the best coach/s gameplan or players, but you do need total buy in, buy in at every level and component, but no blinkers.

Hawthorn fundamentally have a simple gameplan, force turnover, keep possession through uncontested marks

I also agree that our gameplan seemed too complicated for such a young group, which I mentioned a number of times last year, so like all sides, you tinker

Im not big on the mechanics of game plans but only that it must suit the players you have at your disposal , agree entirely about buy in fighting a losing battle without it .
Last year our coaches completely misread the landscape especially taking our injuries into consideration by wanting to play a faster more attacking brand of footy .
Something they had clearly been training for all preseason but they weren't ready this year with Russell on board and clearly bigger and fitter bodies with some nice additions they are .

I wouldn’t rush Kruezer back in at all.
Let him get 100% before even considering him.
Phillips was fantastic on thurs night, deserves another go, if he’s our rd 1 ruck, so be it.
Would like to see Kennedy, O’Brien and Stocker given a run.
Out- Polson, Garlett, Schumacher
No one's rushing Kreuzer, and Phillips sank like a stone after half time.

O'Brien is the only one of the names you've thrown into the mix that looks ready to go for round 1. If you watched the VFL game, Kennedy looks like he's working through another ankle issue, while Stocker looks like he has concrete shoes on at present (though his top speed and physicality are exciting).

Bit harsh on Phillips Jimmie. He was on the bench for most of it and Lobbe rucked
When he did come on, he didn't have the same impact.

What's more, his impact was OK at the centre bounce and good in general midfield play, but he was awful at stoppages. Clarke made him look second rate at times.

Bit harsh Jimmae. I thought he was better than that. JMO

With our three ruckman I don’t see any of them that can share duties. They are like Diesel engines and just need to work and work and do 80% of game.

Phillips has the makings of a good ruck and his marking/lap need to be matched with continuity and chemistry with his teammates.

He opts to kick long and has a nice looking style but needs continuity to work out the speed of the game and fix his around the ground work. Lobbe's smarts and work around the ground are better for mine.

Kreuzer every day of the week though. Centre bounces won't make up for the stoppage work he puts in.

Furthermore, keeping myself grounded after Thursday - we won both JLT matches last year and Dow also looked amazing with a few goals and double digit possessions. Though it was very promising for the future, I still think we struggle with the press and it's so brittle when someone breaks the line that it gets walked into an easy goal.

We should've made a bit more from the entries we had too, but I counted about 5 easy marks that Cripps, McKay and Harry would've otherwise taken. Cuningham was great and I like Ed's running power forward but I prefer having some freakishly quick smalls and not sure we have anyone on our list capable except Pickett.

Think that while Kreuzer may not be the best Centre Bounce ruckman the follow up he provides after the bounce will be more valuable than ever before given that players aren't coming off the back of the square. Ruckmen like Philips are spectating after the bounce.

Would like LOB, Stocker and Kennedy to get a go

I'd imagine we'd play our likely best 22 for round 1 in this game...and Stocker wouldn't be in it.

Even LOB and Kennedy could be considered 'fringe' atm and not a guaranteed best 22 spot with competition from players like Walsh and Setterfield.
Our midfield is stacked with talent and currently we have no injuries in that area except Lang.

Won't be able to fit them all in. Will be interesting to see which mids get left out for round 1.

This game will give us a better indication where we’re at albeit still a practise game at this time of the season. Both teams should field full strength teams.Hopefully a full dress rehearsal to round one.Look forward to going up against probably one of the best midfields in the Comp.
Deepest and best midfield for a little while...

Definitely...i was pleasantly surprised with his defensive application.
He was good outside his ball use...unfortunately that's pretty dam important for a rebounding defender.

Makes me sad though to think he's essentially playing Docherty's role and how nice it would be to have an AA form Doc there as a reliable lock.
