I'm wondering whether it would be beneficial for Joel, as he enters the latter stages of his career, to give up the captaincy and just focus on playing.

He has been the best servant of the club you could ask for. Dedicated, a strong lead from the front type, drags players with him etc ... but over the last year his output seems to have diminished in regards to overall effectiveness ... especially disposal.

Letting go of the captaincy (let Danger have it ... would propel him to another level yet again I reckon) and just let him play his bullocking best without the pressures that come with said captaincy could see him play on for a couple of more years after this contract finishes (2021 I think?).

We've seen with others where once the captaincy has been relinquished, how much better their own game has gotten ... whilst not the same use case - Beams this year has gone from strength to strength.

I want to see Joel back to his very best for as long as possible. I think handing over the captaincy to the likes of Danger will help that.

What do you guys think?
SEN yesterday, Garry and tim. Who is the toughest player in the AFL. Both said Joel Selwood without doubt without even thinking about it.

However you make a good point about the captaincy. Give it to Tim Kelly :p

Not sure if thread is serious

The OP mentioned Beams as a player who stood down from the captaincy and their form has improved, but we need to remember they he stood down from the captaincy due to reasons external to football and that it was for this season - Brisbane's captain next year is not locked away and could be Beams.

As for Joel standing down, he has continually been endorsed by the playing group which is a good indication that he is still the player for the role

I kind of get what you are saying but I dont think the captaincy weighs too heavily on Joel's shoulders, so any perceived form aberrations are unlikely to be due to this.
He is getting a bit of extra attention these days, perhaps because he is so talismanic for the club..maybe up to some other guys to step in and help him a bit more if he is copping extra attention.

No Frozen songs..
But...

this seasons been a Winter's Waltz for Joel where he has been Onward and Upward as he's in Royal Pursuit for his first premiership as captain.

It sometimes seems to be The Trolls who appear to have Frozen Hearts and not enjoying the magic & Sorcery that Joel has shown this year.

And surely we will see during the pre-season In Summer that Joel will once again be named captain on Coronation Day (better known as the season launch)...

Was that too much?

Not only is he the best captain you could imagine (outside perspective) but there is no clear successor. Duncan looked likely a few years ago but is still haunted by the ghost of Mumford when that 50-50 ball in space happens. (Cost us two goals agains Adelaide having a look, something a captain simply cannot do.
My money is actually on Blicavs if it had to be someone next year, so well regarded by the playing group from what I’ve heard. Supreme worker and hates being beaten, loved by coaches and speaks very well.

Danger would be next in-line... He can captain for sure though, and for 2-3 years. His body will hold up it seems.

Stewart would be my next choice given age, unless one of young ones step up another level.

I have a feeling Constable could be the next leader of the younger generation (sub 21 yo's).

we need to recruit some capt types... Brownless is one , Scott is another .. but we should be trying to get a couple of guys who are the best capts with talent we can get OHalloran is one if he falls in our range.

Who ever takes over from Joel is probably 21, 22 now so look at our list ...

lets get rid of Scott first then worry about a new captain

dont want danger as captain, would prefer someone like Duncan, unfortunately we dont have good young leaders

Jog on mate, you're just boring now

The OP just asking what he believed to be a legitimate question and put a case,to which the answer is overwhelmingly in the negative from what I've read and endorse.
Disappointed in some of the comments that mocked the OP but never engaged the subject of the discussion.
