Would love for selwood to step down. Problem is the rest of the team have the spine of a jelly fish. I don't see any leaders on our list.
The rest of the team have the spine of a jellyfish. I think we've been here before. So every player outside Joel Selwood has the spine of a jellyfish, is that right?

Danger would probably be next in line but I think Blicavs could make a good captain along the 'Tom Harley' style parameters. No other standout candidates if it were to happen.
Who is our current vice captain ? Do we have one?
I agree.
Harley was innovative and hugely respected across the AFL, and still is.
Potential head honcho of the AFL if ever there was one.
I see Blicavs now as the next in line should Joel step aside in the next 3 years.

This year we went with Danger as VC and Taylor as deputy VC - I can see some changes being made next year, with Blicavs elevated to the deputy role.

Stewart is another who is highly regarded within the walls at KP and I could see being added to the leadership group

Joel as captain is one of the furthest things we have from needing to be fixed. A time will come in the next few years where he'll have to pass the torch but I think we need to see an appreciable drop off in his output before that happens and I don't think we've seen that at all this season. He's been consistently good this season if not great.

Thats a good way of looking at .. other things that need more attention...

they just did this topic on Krock... for mine we need to add more options .. Scott and Brownless would be a good start .. im sure Wells could say who he has highlight as the best leader etc.. talent comes and goes but without the right leadership.. you have 18 guys all playing tug of war.. ..so Joel is good for another 3 years for sure... develop some alts for that time frame.

Is he a polished media type... its seems that is a part of it these days..

Stewart?

That's one area I'm not sure on and I guess it's also a case of not knowing if the captaincy/leadership group & what it now entails is something that he would want or enjoy - it's not something for every player, and there will be guys that never have that title but still provide leadership

On field no issue..its the other stuff

I guess I am on my own.

Im ok with that.

I thought it was worth a discussion... watching today it firms my belief, but I know thats just me.

I love what he has done, how he goes about it etc etc... nothing to do with anything but getting him back to his best for the limited amount of time he has left.

GHS is probably the guy with the best leadership abilities in the next age bracket down from Joel, but sadly he’s never been able to cement a spot in the 22.

I'm wondering whether it would be beneficial for Joel, as he enters the latter stages of his career, to give up the captaincy and just focus on playing.

He has been the best servant of the club you could ask for. Dedicated, a strong lead from the front type, drags players with him etc ... but over the last year his output seems to have diminished in regards to overall effectiveness ... especially disposal.

Letting go of the captaincy (let Danger have it ... would propel him to another level yet again I reckon) and just let him play his bullocking best without the pressures that come with said captaincy could see him play on for a couple of more years after this contract finishes (2021 I think?).

We've seen with others where once the captaincy has been relinquished, how much better their own game has gotten ... whilst not the same use case - Beams this year has gone from strength to strength.

I want to see Joel back to his very best for as long as possible. I think handing over the captaincy to the likes of Danger will help that.

What do you guys think?

Dangerfield logical he is at the top of his game good with the media. Great leadership selwood is getting older might ease the load and give him more time to focus on his own football

Not only is he the best captain you could imagine (outside perspective) but there is no clear successor. Duncan looked likely a few years ago but is still haunted by the ghost of Mumford when that 50-50 ball in space happens. (Cost us two goals agains Adelaide having a look, something a captain simply cannot do.
My money is actually on Blicavs if it had to be someone next year, so well regarded by the playing group from what I’ve heard. Supreme worker and hates being beaten, loved by coaches and speaks very well.

If Blicavs became captain "Big Footy" Geelong would melt down you might as well bring Kent Kinglsey back

This ^. I suppose it's hard to get a game ahead of a couple of Brownlow medallists, Duncan, Joel etc. I'd prefer him in the side right now though over some others.

I thought I stumbled into a Hawthorn, Carlton, Adelaide thread for a moment.

He's a multiple AA captain ffs. Plus Geelong owe him bigtime

So would I. He's undoubtedly slow, but he's always had a habit of popping up with goals at handy times. The north game last year comes to mind. A bit of that goal sense wouldn't go astray in the side right now. We could also do with a bit more leadership in there too. I'll be very disappointed if/when GHS is delisted or traded.
