Best first year player who is mature age and is 50/50 to stay with us.
Best young player that is 25 (should be changed to best middle aged player)
5th in the rising star is something

the arrogance of geelong supporters is unbelievable

Says the bloke who cracks it every time we aren’t the one team out of 18 that wins the comp

Re. The actual topic, I think a few people have overreacted - it’s not like anyone has suggested he can’t still do it, or that he’s no good at it.

But think about it - put that guy in a cats jersey and you are going to have a leader. That much is obvious. But just as we need to start planning for who will play the role of senior players when they leave, it also doesn’t hurt to have a succession plan for leaders when they leave.

What better way to learn than on the job with the previous captain still there?

I'm wondering whether it would be beneficial for Joel, as he enters the latter stages of his career, to give up the captaincy and just focus on playing.

He has been the best servant of the club you could ask for. Dedicated, a strong lead from the front type, drags players with him etc ... but over the last year his output seems to have diminished in regards to overall effectiveness ... especially disposal.

Letting go of the captaincy (let Danger have it ... would propel him to another level yet again I reckon) and just let him play his bullocking best without the pressures that come with said captaincy could see him play on for a couple of more years after this contract finishes (2021 I think?).

We've seen with others where once the captaincy has been relinquished, how much better their own game has gotten ... whilst not the same use case - Beams this year has gone from strength to strength.

I want to see Joel back to his very best for as long as possible. I think handing over the captaincy to the likes of Danger will help that.

What do you guys think?

I get that everyone is entitled to an opinion, and my opinion is that this is one of the most idiotic things I’ve ever heard.

I don't JS should give up the captaincy just yet. But as part of the club's review, I'd like him to take a long, hard look at himself, maybe along with other senior leaders, and how he leads the players off field and how he making sure the culture of the team is correct and all encompassing; total commitment to the team-first ethic, no dickheads, no slackness in training or drills, and complete belief in supporting teammates on the field.
Maybe not just a team bonding activity this off-season, but also a leadership group camp/course.

I can't name a better captain in the AFL than Joel.

Consistency, playing ability, leadership, courage, strong media performer and a wonderful ambassador for the club on all levels.

He can stay as captain for as long as he likes.
Leadership?? Has become a momentum killer with both shocking disposal turnovers and free kicks against in numerous big games over the past couple of years. He wasnt always this way but it happens too often now to be written off as bad luck.

Is an awful media performer. Comes across as incredibly thick.

Is also close to the most hated player in the league by neutrals rightly or wrongly so not sure how he comes across as a good ambassador.

Somehow this thread is 4 pages long. Only needed 1 reply of “no.” and then lock it.
Yep. The shelf life of this drivel has gone on too long.
22 muppets among us.

You forgot costing the club a sponsor in the off season as well. Just imagine for a moment the outcry on here if one of the less popular members of the list - say Rhys Stanley for the first half of this season - had done what Selwood did. Somehow I don't think that would be studiously ignored somehow.

i think Joel should stay on however their arn't many other natural leaders around him that would inspire the team ?

In our great era we had plenty of options for captain

True, but none of us picked Harley before he was appointed, and he's been the best captain I've ever seen at Geelong by a comfortable distance.

And your opinion does not even warrant a reply, but hey you logged in and all.

Give me a reason why instead of it being idiotic.

It's amazing how those who dismiss it immediately won't offer any justification at all.

It's stupid because.....well, it just is. Because I say so.

People are scared of change.

The way I see it the club needs to make many changes, a new captain is a pretty easy one.

Shows the supporters there is a changing of the guard and that the club is heading in a new direction.

This is a good argument.
Before the final against Melbourne I would have said leave the captaincy with Joel.
But I think maybe he also needs the change.

I wouldn't base his captaincy off one game. He's clearly still the best leader at the club. I think he needs change in where he's played and get a bit of support. He seemed to be frustrated this year and rightfully so. It would be nice if the up and coming leaders of the club get in there and back him up. The bloke cops it every game and no one goes in for him.

I'm not suggesting he's not up to it anymore. And it wasn't solely based on that game. But freeing him of the captaincy may also improve his state of mind.
Alternatively, the club needs to come up with a strategy to get him "unfrustrated". He will be an even better player for it.

Stays captain for 2019 if we dont make finals then everything should change
We were perilously close to not making it this year.

We have basically just made up the numbers for at least the past few.

The deep review they are doing needs to put everything up for analysis and action for 2019 and beyond.

Captaincy and leadership style (that includes coaches too) must be reviewed also.

The OP suggested the idea solely on the basis that it might extend Selwood's playing career.
Without "any justification at all".
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Not that I'm calling the OP a goose, of course, it's not up to me to make that sort of judgement.
Well, not out loud, anyway.
