MRP / Trib. Junior Rioli hit on Jordan Ridley

Action vs outcome again.

The action would be low impact, there's literally nothing in it. The outcome though is a concussion through some fluke spot he's hit or the angle he's hit him at etc.

Of course the outcome needs to be factored in, but it shouldn't be the be all and end all. If it were the case, then the AFL needs to just come out and say it - if you cause a concussion, it will be graded as severe.

Putting both the action and outcome together, I would land at high.

In my mind, BOTH always need to be considered.

In todays world with CTE and what not whether you like it outcome will ALWAYS be factored in. Is it perfect no but I haven’t heard a better way. Simply put don't concuss people and you don’t get suspended especially behind the ball actions. If anything the issue is they haven’t been harsh enough the last 5 years.

Not his first concussion from a stray arm, think he might be a bit prone to them, or have a weak spot where he is more susceptible than the average player.

Given he was complaining about the same side of the jaw that hipwood got him on, with yesterdays incident, where it didn't look like any contact was made on that side of his face.

Though it is seemingly a bigger 'hit' than the Rioli one, you wouldn't expect a player to get knocked out by that either.

I reckon if players stopped elbowing him in his "weak spot" he probably wouldn't be "prone to concussions".

Stupid Ridley getting in the way of sniping players doing dirty deeds

End of the day you can accuse players of being susceptible, contributing etc but ultimately hit behind the play, an injury sustained, Rioli is going for 3+ weeks minimum.

And really, as it should be. Doesn’t look like there was any genuine intention to hurt him, but there also wasn’t any concern (“duty of care”) if he did or not. Don’t go high, keep the niggle below the neck, and you don’t face this. Can’t put it on Ridley.

In the above image Rioli and Ridley have clearly gone past each other without contact occuring.

I think this is pretty conclusive.

The whole Ridley falling thing looks a lot more like stunned than diving.

You can see in actual video (not stills) that your first photo Ridley is actually starting to stumble/react to the contact. His head is extended backwards, he’s not standing there thinking “dive and get subbed off”, he’s dazed.

I’ve (and I bet we all have) seen people go down a few steps after real contact, it can happen. Your stills prove nothing.

Nobody is putting it on Ridley - just saying that it is a factor. For example, Paddy McCartin has a history of concussion and recently got knocked out in the most innocuous manner.

If a player accidentally clips him ever so slightly, and he gets knocked out - is it entirely the players fault? (i'm not placing blame on McCartin either). If the exact same incident happened to another player, they wouldn't have got knocked out.

It's all hypothetical, as it's not something that can be measured or realistically factored in, but there is a huge element of luck involved here.

I agree, he's not playing for it - again, just an unfortunate chain of events. I don't think anyone went into this contest with any intention to hurt someone, or to try and win a free kick out of it etc.

Dogs act by Rioli

our most important defender wil now miss against Lions

And this is the type of comment that the port fans are defending Rioli against. We all agree he will get weeks, and we all agree he deserves them.

The only thing we're talking to is intent. For it to be a dog act, it needs to be intentional. This is clearly not intentional.

There are definitely some posters in this thread putting it on Ridley.

Yeah fair call - there are a few calling it a dive (and to be honest, on first viewing I thought it was a dive as well given the contact). Given he was subbed out due to concussion, I don't see how anyone can call it a dive at that point.

The stills prove the point post took him out, once you see it you won't be able to unsee it when watching the video.

We all know another player will go down in an innoculous way and it'll be all good such is the chook raffle that is the MRO. Just have a laugh in the meantime.
