He's a bit of a contradiciton TBH.
Can do some genius stuff and then does something dumb.
Used to give away a 50 metre free just about every game for West Coast.
Still one of the smartest (on field) players going around.

Other than it being an indication that he clearly knew someone was there. You don't just randomly jump and throw your arm at nothing.

Think he’ll cop 3. Could’ve easily been 4, not sure how they’ve come to “careless” when it’s pretty clear he jumps into him with intent to hit him.
Anyway 3 is about right.

Well of course he knew someone was there, he was trying to put on a block for his teammate.
The fact he threw his arm out and hit Ridley in the head concussing him is the only issue. Whether he jumped or did it grounded holds no relevance.
I'm interested in what part of Rioli actually caused the injury. His elbow? Hand? Gust of wind? It's difficult to tell on the footage.

So you know the incident where Ridley was chasing his opponent, and Rioli turned around and made contact with Ridley’s head, directly causing him to be concussed and be subbed out as well as miss the next week? That part.

Based on the footage I just don’t see how the impact can be graded severe. I know he was concussed, I get that and I am not trying to downplay it, but it is clearly just a glancing blow that must have hit him right on the point to cause a concussion. There is just no way that action can cause a “severe” impact. Not when you see some of the bumps that occur week in week out. Take the impact of the collision between Shiel and rozee. That was significantly higher impact to the head than this one and he bounced straight up. Very unlucky and no way worth 3 weeks.
So just seen a theory on Twitter - Riolis trailing arm may actually hit Finlayson first, which bounces off and into Ridley.
With the terrible vision it's hard to be sure, but it does look to have some merit.

Thanks for the laugh Casey. Which to your eye looks like higher impact, this or van rooyens?
The vision isn't great so it's hard to tell exactly what happened. Better vision might get him off but might also get him more ganes. No one really knows.
In the end.
1) It was off the ball.
2) A player was injured, probably impacts the result and will miss games.
We can argue all the legal semantics but the AFL make it up as they go along and I think half the time decide the penalty and then make everything fit around that.
They will want a decent punishment less a game so it's not to severe as he was racially vilified after the game on social media.
