Says it's a non-issue, he's staying.

Just smart management for $$$

Yeah, manager seemed pretty convinced that Kurt would stay and seemed really keen to stress that Kurt had already gone on record as saying he wanted to stay here in Adelaide and that he loves it here, has bought a house here, loves NC and basically just loves playing for the Crows.

As much as you can't trust managers, it was as reassuring as you can get...so I guess 0.1% confidence gained.

I'm a fan of how our youngsters seem to get on on the field and in the rooms, and by the sounds of it, off the field to.

Creating a tight little group here.

Kurt's manager is going to be on KG's internet radio show shortly, link for those interested to listen.

You champion.

He was asked about 9 times if Kurt would stay. He spoke for about 5 minutes as to all the reasons why he will- loves it here, has a house etc... was quite adamant. He used the example of Simon Black who apparently hated Brisbane and wanted to stay in perth.

Then when asked flat out if Tippet would stay he stumbled and muttered a much less confident "absolutely"- classic. He then spoke for 10 minutes about how good the GC teams prospects are.

Oh and the best part was when he proclaimed that "Kurt has repeatedly stated his future is with the Gold Coast..... I mean Adelaide!!... Adelaide."

Thanks, Johno, that was great. Don't know how to record, sorry, but the manager said that while nothing is certain, Kurt was on record as saying he was committed to the Crows, loved the group, loved Craig as a coach, was grateful for being drafted, and the work and faith put in him, and had bought a house in Glenelg. When Kurt's girlfriend in GC was mentioned Blucher? suggested she already spent time in Adelaide. While I will fear we'll loose KT until he is signed and sealed, I feel a lot better than I did before this.
I suppose any footballer improving as fast as Kurt is improving would be advised to take contract negotiations slowly - he's got until the end of next year and surely his value will keep rising, especially with the GC in the wings.
Adelaide has veterans, who don't hurt the salary cap so much, but no marquee players apart from them. Lots of good ones who will want paying well, but we should be able to fit everyone in without having to give up any who want to stay I hope. So the Porps/Tippett/Walker Knights/McKernan/Dangerfield forward 6 could still happen!

A Freudian Slip maybe re the Gold Coast but he had just spoken about the Gold Coast so I take that comment with as a slip. I thought he sounded positive about Kurt staying but who knows what the future brings.

In the Shed on Sunday night Kurt replied to a couple of people something like ""I'm not going anywhere" to whatever they asked him, I didn't hear their actual question though.

I quite like listening to KG & the General for my afternoon sports/footy fix while I read Big Footy. They speak with Neil Kerley on a regular basis, who I enjoy listening to & the Roo is on as well.

best judge of young talent I have seen .........could pickem real young and was rarely wrong

Have to also thank Jack Cahill ......without whose praise the AFC would never have woken up and re-drafted Porplyzia

Gold Coast's inaugural list is going to be VERY different in nature to Adelaide's - and to an extent Port's, West Coast's and Freo's.

The overwhelming majority of the players on Adelaide's list were SANFL stars, many of them rapidly approaching their 30th birthdays. We had a very mature group of players, with relatively few youngsters amongst them. Thankfully, those youngsters included the likes of Bickley, Rehn, Hart, Smart and Ricciuto. The other clubs have also had a solid base of mature aged players upon which to draw.

In comparison, the GC team will have relatively few senior players. They may be able to poach 16 uncontracted players - but will struggle to do so if history is any guide (we couldn't fill our quota which was even smaller). Beyond that, they will have to trade for experienced players, or use some of their later round 2010 draft selections on players delisted by the other clubs. The overwhelming majority of their list will be made up of teenagers - probably 35 of their 48 senior listed players will be under the age of 20 in 2011.

The implications of this are two-fold. Firstly, comparisons to the early successes (7 year flags) of the non-Vic teams may be invalid. Secondly, they will have a large group of quality youngsters (noting that they will probably sign 17 of the top 20 players eligible for the 2010 draft) who will mature as a group. The bonds between this group of players will be phenomenal once they mature and I would definitely expect them to win some flags once they reach that 25-30yo peak. It also means that they're likely to have bigger problems in the 10-12 year range as 80% of their team retires within a 2-year window!

My guess... They will win the flags that the other teams won, but their window will open slightly later due to the lack of experience on their inaugural list.

for the purposes of this discussion, much of this is irrelevant.

yes their list will be structured a little different, but the real point is that they can sell the sizzle. they will be able to put forward a very coherent and reasonable expectation of near team success.

whether it pans out is neither here nor there - the story can be made.

On the assumption he goes (which I don't think he will, but for the sake of argument...) we could always trade him to GC. I know that GC can sign him for nothing, but if he tells them he won't go unless a suitable trade is arranged with the Crows (I think Stenglein and or K Johnson did similar?), then they might have to give us something for him or risk missing out altogether. GC have some juicy draft picks to play with, if it goes down that route.

Even though GC could theoretically sign him for no cost to themselves, they can't do it unless he agrees to it.

Ultimately, of course I hope he stays. We have a virtually guaranteed gun forward/ruckman, and no draft pick (aside from maybe #1 or 2 in a Riewoldt/Nick Nat year) can compensate that.

hoping for an equitable trade to GC when he is out of contract, makes less sense that relying on the AFL's compensation scheme.

the idea is to put blind luck and optimism in the bottom drawer, if it comes to that.

quite frankly if Tippet goes I cannot see the AFL screwing us. I realise I am usually very cynical about the AFL but I really do believe that we will get fair return for Tippet.

How we use the draft pick is up to us but I would be surprised if we were not given a top 10 given the position he plays and the rarity of finding a player of his ability.

Kurts already said he had no interest in going to the Gold Coast and was very excited about the young list that was being developed here.

whilst nothing is ever guaranteed till its signed, I think the Tippett-leaving hysteria is bordering on the swine flu panic.

If Tippett HAD signed last week for the Crows, whilst Id be really happy as a supporter, Id be telling him to get a manager who wasnt completely incompetant. no manager worth his salt who is acting for the best interests of his client is going to pass up the opportunity to use the GC to push up his salary worth. Id wager every manager who has a kid under 25 would be doing the exact same thing.

heck even if there was no GC coming in, Kurts a young player whos only just starting to break out. his value is only going to go up when he re-signs next year, rather than what it would be as of right now.

Bryce says hi.

is this more or less than we would expect in trade?

What happened with Cahill again?

When he coached Port for a couple of years to mentor Ginever he gave press interviews saying that Porplyzia had the best skills of any player in the SANFL

ATS to the best of my knowledge he was off the rows radar having been delisted ........next draft he's re-drafted

I credit Cahill for raising his profile .......and we know how important that is to any player/coach ;)

I have no idea why you chose to answer in this manner?

Anyway, the reason for my thinking is that quite simply the AFL have to do this again for WS (or whoever) now they really don't need to be pissing off the clubs by screwing them the first time around.

I think a top 10 pick would be appropriate but it would have to be a highish one.

that makes no sense. the whole point of having an AFL commission is that they get to make decisions that piss off the clubs, the point was that the clubs were very short term in their thinking and were shooting themselves, and the comp in the foot. so they ceded all power to the commission who can basically do whatever they like, and the clubs have to like it.

upsetting the clubs isn't an issue for them - after all, lowering the compensation paid, helps the new club. and isn't that supposedly in the interests of the league as a whole?

I think a top 10 pick would be appropriate but it would have to be a highish one.

ok, fair enough. but that's not a top 10 pick, you are now talking top 5, top 6 something like that?

now you've placed a pretty high value on him, and a lot of faith in Anderson et al to see it your way.

surely you can see the logic in wanting to not go down that path? after all, what if the GC take someone even better from elsewhere and we end up with the 2nd or 3rd best pick on offer? and that's precisely how West Coast got Michael Gardiner for example. offered up something better to Port and jumped the queue

The pick we'd get for Tippett is actually dependent upon where we finish that season.

The rules for the GC compensation drafts are as follows..

The player is to be judged under a formula, the criteria for which have been made public but not the weightings. Assuming Tippett is rated as highly as we expect, we'd be getting tier-one or tier-two compensation: a first round selection, or a pick between the first and second rounds (most likely the former).

We have 5 years to use this draft selection, but it can't be used in 2010 or 2011, as these are the GC & WS drafts. We have to declare at the START of the season that we intend to use the selection. Assuming it's tier-one compensation, the draft pick we get would immediately follow our regular first round selection - if we finish 15th it would be pick #3, if we win the flag it would be pick #17 (ignoring priority picks). If it's tier-two, we get the pick between the first & second round picks - presumably they'd use reverse ladder order to sort out the case where multiple teams are claiming players in this region, nobody has a clue how priority picks fit in here.

There were quite a few people close to the club who were scathing about Porps being delisted. Ayres was apparently the main instigator in the delisting, others were keen to still keep him on the list.

Porps was not fit enough though and did not, quite possibly, do enough work on the track to stay on the list. The delisting was probably the making of him.

Trust me WW - the club did not need to hear from Cahill about Porps skill set, they were already quite aware of it.
