Hey km a number of phantom drafters and cal twomey have earmarked scrimshaw and taranto (though i dont think he'll be there) around ports pick 9. Question is what is the difference between riley bonner and jack scrimshaw? They have similar listed deficiencies in theyre one on one work and strengths in pretty good kicks. Id say scrimshaw has better agility but i cant really see us picking up another 192ish hbflanker unless scrimshaw has scope to be a bonafide outside mid

KM

Many say that the Eagles are in desperate need of inside mids of decent size. Whilst I think this is true to a degree, I think it's equally important that we target someone with some leadership, who stands up when it counts most, perhaps with a bit of mongrel in them. When the going gets tough the Eagles regularly lack this leadership, and looking at the top teams they all have these sort of players, e.g Bont, J. Kennedy, Danger, Selwood, Ward, Hodge/Lewis/Mitchell.

Preferably would be a mid, but can be anyone really. E.g. a half back like Hodge/Waters. Anyone fit the bill around the pick 12-14? And further into the draft?

What do you see in Powell pepper that makes you think he plays like Stewart crameri? If anything he shows a little bit of Dustin Martin with his acceleration out of the contest.

Dustin Martin came second in this years brownlow.

I don't see nearly that kind of future for SPP. He is unlike Martin a poor kick and isn't the same level ball winner through the midfield, with his best play this season coming off half-forward.

If you think of someone with talent more comparable to Powell-Pepper while playing a similar style of game I'm open minded.

Taranto I feel will go higher. Scrimshaw may not be there either with GC chomping at the bit to get him.

Scrimshaw finds more of the ball and has more tricks - evasiveness through traffic particularly.

With Scrimshaw some think his best chance to develop is through the midfield. So it will be interesting to see the developmental vision of the club that draft him.

Tom Bell? Big pacy power runner with a nose for kicking long goals but lacking consistency by foot?

Not a bad comparison. I feel SPP will be better than Bell, but it's closer to the mark.

I think of Bell more so as a mid (or better suited as a mid) given his endurance and stoppage capabilities but he did play forward mostly last year for Brisbane.

Frankly that's where he should be playing his footy based on what I watched of him for Carlton at stoppages. Was other than Cripps Carlton's best stoppage player in 2015 for mine.

Braidon Blake has dropped off the radar after being nominated as a Top 25 pick at the start of the year by Foxsports. Whats the deal? Is he a chance?

Not in the mix and a fairly speculative call at the state of the season having done little in 2015 either. Not invited to the state or national combine.

Ok TAC Cup key position player who might be good enough to make a state league side with work.

But hasn't ultimately had an impact forward or back and sits firmly behind what is an unexceptional group of key position players.

Hey Knightmare; great work in this thread as usual by yourself. :thumbsu:

What's the absolute lowest level of picks you would take in exchange for Essendons no. 1 pick overall? So for example, would it be a top 6 pick then a top 12 selection.

Before the trade window opened there were some rumours about GWS exchanging picks 7 and 5 (which they don't have) for the Bombers pick 1. To my mind that's a tad unrealistic from the Bombers side of things, that is if its true the first 8 or so picks are pretty even in terms of talent.

KM, who do you think Port will draft with 9? With Scrimshaw most likely being chosen by Gold Coast, do you think we will go for someone like Clark, Scheer or Mutch? Thanks
Scrimshaw is a GWS academy player who will most definitely be matched by GWS. Likely a top 10/12 pick.
Scheer is a GC academy player who is not expected to be a first round pick. GC is expected to match a second round bid for Scheer.
Mutch is a GWS academy player expected to go in the second round. Questionable that GWS match.

Do you mean Dylan Clarke?

I don't think that Jack Scrimshaw is a GWS academy player, you may be thinking of Setterfield.

Yes, I am thinking of Dylan Clark, the brother of Ryan.

Berry any chance to get to West Coast?

He is a potential consideration for WCE in the 1st round. Could go somewhere around WCE's pick.

Hey knightmare who do you think eagles should take with their picks?

If I'm picking (it's always about best available and I'd be looking at something like - to maximise the potential of getting the players I favour at each choice)

1st round: Shai Bolton (Fwd)
2nd round: Willem Drew (Mid)
3rd round: Lachlan Tiziani (Fwd)
4th round/rookie draft: Ben Ronke (Mid)
5th round/rookie draft: Brodie Romensky (Mid/def)

I'd be looking for two picks specifically any two picks inside the top five.

Any two of McCluggage/McGrath/Brodie/Taranto/Ainsworth is what I'd look for as advantageous and better than one of McCluggage and McGrath.

Otherwise a top five pick and the right player for pick one also I'd be open to.

Variations on this deal could be possible. But that's a rough feel for what I'd say pick one should be worth to Essendon.

GWS might move up to pick 2/3 but unless they have those picks or offer a top five pick and a player of consequence they can have pick two.

Griffin Logue, Tim English and Sam Petrevski-Seton may be some who could be considered by Port around their selection depending on availability assuming Scrimshaw has been taken.

Dylan Clarke likely will go somewhere in the second round.

Setterfield is GWS Academy, not Scrimshaw.

So looks like this

Hrovat to North Melb pick 32
Hamling to Fremantle pick 35
Stevens St kilda pick 50

So what do we get for picks
18
32
35
40
50

Hey KM,
Are you doing a phantom this year or sticking with power rankings? Cal Twomey's top 30 was surprising in the latter half!

I'll do a phantom draft after the trade period is complete.

Looking at Cal's top 30 none of the names surprise me. It's fairly consistent in the most part with what my phantom draft will look like and what I expect on draft day. None of the ranges of any of the players he lists strike me as being wrong or jumping out of the page at me for any reason.

My power rankings just as you'll find out when you see my phantom draft will differ greatly as it does each year.

Hey KM, how do you think SPP would go for first year impact?

Depends on situation he gets drafted to and depends on preseason. May not play or may play every game and have an impact. Probably goes somewhere inbetween that, playing and having his good games with some inconsistency (likely off HF).

Knightmare ... has Mitch McCarthy played much as a forward. He seems to have the set of skill to be able do it, obvious raw atm. Just looking at KPF that might be available late say r3 on. Larkey ?

McCarthy has spent a lot of time through the ruck. But being too short for ruck if he develops it's probably more as a key defender. I don't see the scope in him to develop into a key forward as a top ager who kicked no goals this season. The good key forwards almost always have the performances on the board up forward as juniors.

Larkey also as a key forward wouldn't be a consideration. Ok relief ruck/forward.

With key forwards though it's a position about quality. For the most part, those who have developed into AFL quality key forwards are either early picks or father son choices.

It's a position of superiority of talent. Role players are for the most part are not sufficient or worthwhile.

If I had to take a shot at any key forward late draft, Ratugolea would be my pick. Raw and flawed but brings impact and application.

Otherwise Brett Eddy as a mature age rookie as a stop gap I also would recommend to any club.

Hope things are well, KM. Great work and a joy to read.

Would love to hear your thoughts on Sydney's list, approach to trade week and how you've seen our young talent Hewett, Zak Jones, Aliir, Heeney, Mills etc come on from your draft year evaluations.

Heeney is Sydney's next star midfielder. One of the absolute best young mids in the game for mine based on the way he came on late season with more opportunities up the field.

Mills will be good and like Heeney better when he gets the midfield opportunities.

Aliir has so far surpassed any developmental expectations I had of him. He couldn't read the flight as a junior at all and other than raw athleticism didn't look like a footballer. Big improver and looks like a clear best 22 player going forward.

Zak Jones much improved this year and can have a career. Looks like a good piece coming out of defence and can establish himself as a regular and get better.

Hewett I feel will in time (if opportunity presents) find his way into the midfield. Only ok as a forward but is a strong contested baller with scope to improve as a mid mostly.

I also outside of that list of players mentioned really like the look of Nankervis as a ruckman and feel he has good scope to develop.

Sydney overall probably lack outside run and polish so that would be what I'd be after in the most part where possible. It's not a draft Sydney need any major part of with the strength in this draft being inside mids - with a general lack of quality outside players or talls. Trading into next years draft or signing/trading for guys who can help now is Sydney's best option and just look for some value late draft this year.
