Ladder predictions for 2010

Lloyd, Lucas, Lovett and Mcphee is a lot of experience and quality to lose.

On top of that you have Dustbin Fletcher ready for his pension, an average midfield, average defence and young forward line.
Then your draw is 2nd hardest to ours so you are going to be pushing shit up hill.

average midfield ... on the way up
average defence ... well on the way up (as widely documented)
young forward line ... absolutely no idea where this will go (except monfries is improving and williams should be an excellent pick up)

yes lloyd and lucas are losses, but neither had an impact in the second half of the season. Lovett was hit and miss this year, but still important, not sure how badly we'll miss him. Will be that x-factor we miss a bit in the midfield, but we still have ample runners to replace him with and Davey loves pushing up the field as well (just as quick).

The draw is tough, but actually look at the teams that finished in the bottom 8 this year. Apart from Hawthorn (bad year, injuries) and WCE (definitely on the way up again) none of Freo (slowly improving), Melb (improving, but coming from a long way behind), Port (lost their best midfielder, key players are ageing, will fall), Sydney (EPIC loss of talent with retirements + top ruckman is gone), Kangas (most inconsistent team in the AFL, probably improving, but I don't see too much of an improvement just yet) and of course the epic cleanout at Richmond (no comment needed) will finish above us.

Can bookmark that in. 10th at worst and probably 6th at best.

In 2009 Essendon won only 10 games of AFL, it was a weird season and enough for them to fall into the top8.....in 2007 Essendon won 10 games of AFL and finished 12th

Essendon will prob again win 8-10 games of footy, that will have them finishing anywhere form 8th down to bout 12th

Collingwood will once again go well in the H&A season, Malthouse has them playing a consistent and well disciplined style of footy. Pity they don't have what it takes to win multiple finals games.
Sydney and Port are hard to predict, they could both easily make the finals but in Sydney's case it depends if the old warhorses can go around one more time. Port are their own worst enemies.
The last two spots in the 8 will be out 4 clubs - Brisbane, Carlton, Essendon & Sydney. All are pretty even.
West Coast is nicely building a well balanced team, probably need another season of developing before moving back into the 8 though. Melbourne are porbably a season behind them development wise.
The rest will battle it out for various levels of crapness.

If you're a glass half-empty kind of person.

Essendon won 10 games in '07 with Hird and a large group of players soon to get the arse. Essendon won 8 games in '08 after turning over the side and then won 10.5 games in '09 whilst unearthing some great talent in Hurley, Pears and Zaharakis.

For a glass half-full kind of person, you would anticipate the return of Hille, an uninterrupted pre-season into McVeigh, Welsh and Prismall and simply another pre-season into Ryder, Hooker, Gumbleton, Houli, Pears, Myers, Hocking, Reimers, T Slattery, Daniher etc. will see Essendon improve yet again.

Prediction: 12 wins, 6th-8th.

It's a really, really hard year to predict. I can see Essendon and West Coast making the finals easily, but i'm tipping the Hawks and Blues to just scrape in over them.
