Laidley benches red-hot Nathan Thompson

Regardless of the Thompson issue, Laidley's form in the box (and on the track for that matter) has been pretty poor this year. And as much as i think he is the most vulnerable coach in the league right now, they literally can't afford to sack him. How many years left on his contract?

So he could not even stand in the goal square for another 2 minutes of the game?

If that were the case, why leave Rocca on the bench?

It's less than half a dozen games since Laidley took us to the finals, in most peoples eyes that was quite an overachievement. Anyone that would even think of sacking a coach on the back of a bad month really needs to look at how successful that sort of ploy has been in the past.

How :D:D:D:Dweak is Thompson? Didn't want to cost them the game??? Well by taking yourself off you did you twat!!

Laidley should send him to North Ballarat. When you have to dig deep for your mates, oh I think I'll take myself off. Cannot beleive the pea heart. Hang your head in shame.

Totally agree, yet i still believe he is the most vulnerable. But was just stating that i doubt we will see a sacking as ontop of the traditional reasons North really couldn't afford to waste that type of money. And imagine how insane the journos would go again bout relocating the roos.

A bit of talk on the North board that he was cramping. If that was the case it was probably a smart decision.

Absolutely no ticker. Seriously, he's a full forward - even if he's stuffed he could stand in the square and create a better contest than Petrie could.

The guy was probably the Roo's main chance of winning the game, and he takes himself off? With only a few minutes left in the game, he really should have dug deep.

Agreed.

Bizarre.

... and why did the Kangas try to slow the game and take time off the clock when they were only a goal up with 15+ minutes to go??? I mean they were on top and they gave the momentum back to the Dees...

Very odd by the Kangas.

apparently its our new game plan, didnt you notice us trying to defend the lead against the weagles,

in only the first and second quater, very frustrating.

Just picked this up from the North board:

-------
In case noone heard it, thommo just said on MMM that he was the one who brought himself off because he was buggered, "didnt want to be the one who cost us the game".
---------

Very interesting.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the great Nathan Thompson!!! This is why Hawks fans are so pleased he's no longer our problem.

We'll take 5 goals and a 10 minute rest at the end of each game any day.

didnt wanna stand up and win it either, great pick up for the 'hawthorn cash converters'
"dump your waste for draft picks here, your duds are our stars"

But that's the problem with him moomba mate, he disappears when it matters most. A behind when he could have put you 6 points up with momentum and then he vanishes to the bench?

I've no doubt you wouldn't have been close if not for his 5 goals, but it wasn't enough. A champion would have dug deep for those few minutes. Jeezus, Dipper played with a punctured lung.

Good points Matt, I can't imagine Wayne Carey taking himself off in the last few minutes, perhaps this is the culture Laidley is creating, failure is punished.
Thompsons history of depression is evident in his decision to come off the ground, he fears failure, and can't deal with punishment.

He has been well below average since round one. His contract expires at the end of next year but he has offered to walk at anytime if the club feels he is not the right man for the job.

The issue is more of a case of is there anyone better available? Get some other new coach? They are just as likely to make poor decisions. Not many good coaches available at the moment.

What about the guy who coached the SANFL flag last year or the WAFL flag last year, good coaches are everywhere, you just have to know where to look.

Big difference between SANFL and AFL.

Obviously the problem at the roos (re:walking off) is lack of discipline on Thompsons behalf.Would he have walked off if a Malthouse or Sheedy or Matthews was in charge?

Maybe we shouldn't blame Thompson as he DID kick 5 goals , maybe the roos have too many passengers right now?
