Leigh Matthews on Tom Boyd and the Bulldogs

Other clubs would have been lining up to throw big money at the kid if he stayed one more year at GWS, so given the shit storm created by Griffen when he left, it was the right play.

Whilst i agree the amount seems extremely high (almost crazy) for someone who had only played 9 games, KPF don't grow on trees, and long term high value contracts are becoming the norm, a lot of it based on potential.

Exactly. Had the kid put himself on the open market at the end of this year, clubs would have been falling all over themselves to pay him any price he named. Carlton for one was banking on it and thought they had him sorted.

The fact the Doggies gazzumped everyone has left a bitter taste for some it seems, and I'm not sure why that is.

Sure - he might turn into a bust. But we had to have a crack for once in our, to quote John Elliott, "tragic history", didn't we.

Looks like there are plenty of unsavoury folk around here. I'm very surprised that people think it is ok to wish failure on a young player just because you don't like the wage that he is earning. I wish Boyd all success, just not against the Dees.

It's funny how people always criticize the blokey bloke nature of former players in the commentary box saying every player is a gun yet when someone has a differing point of view (Leigh with Sandilands and now Boyd) or tries using stats (King) they get howled down.

I think it's the sentiment (I hope it's not successful) and the lack of thought put into the comments that have been targeted here... I have no issue with people making comments, it's just the stupid comments I object to.

Lol Matthews just said that Key Forwards are worth their weight in gold as Tex took a grab and goal.

How heavy is Boyd? What is gold worth these days?

I think Leigh may not know which way is up at the moment.
Walker is proven, Boyd is not

Hoping a kid fails to prove a point. About as classy a comment as you would expect from.a man with his history
This just exemplifies what a self indulgent prick Mathews must be.

I bet he wouldn't say the same if it was Hawthorn or Brisbane that did the deal.

And so he should get howled down for saying on national television that he hopes a 19 year old footballer is a failure at his new club.

Stop trying to protect your former coach from cling the ridicule he deserves. He definitely would not have said the same if it was one of the top clubs ........ he loves to smear the Bulldogs though.

This is ridiculous, for years everyone has said that the Bulldogs need to chase a big forward, even Matthews himself has said it. They go out and do it (albeit with a risky deal) and now he comes out with this crap.

I think he's starting to go senile

I look at it as similar to when Brisbane went after Fevola, even though that was a spectacular failure in just about every way imaginable. He was a risk, everyone knew he was a risk. And with Bradshaw/Brown in place alongside a developing list, Brisbane would probably have been good for the lower half of the finals for the next five or so years. But they decided that they wanted to aim higher than that and even though it didn't work, I applaud them for having a crack and not accepting mid-table anonymity.

How can Boyd even get to the Dogs in the first place? Isn't there a contract by the AFL that has him see out his initial 2 years upon getting drafted? He is still on draftee wages for crying out loud. Which means he would be earning over 1.1m a year as of next season. I hope the Dogs know what they are doing with the well-being of Boyd... former number 1 draft pick, left his original club after requesting a trade whilst still contracted, and finally earning stupid cash after essentially playing NEAFL for most of his draft year. This is a disaster waiting to happen not only for the Dogs but also for the well-being of Boyd. Imagine the pressure this young kid is experiencing after accepting a deal to good to refuse.

In the end GWS agreed to trade him and where more than fairly compensated with pick 6 and a genuine A grader.

They could have just said no but did the smart thing and got a god deal.

This won't become the norm because elite players aren't going to be walking out on clubs to go to teams who just got the no1 pick very often. Without that the Dogs don't have the currency to trade for Boyd and they weren't going to push their best player and captain out.

I think it's fair to not agree with the way the trade happened when looking at Boyd himself, as a first year player should never have the right to "demand" a trade anywhere. The fact that he had that much leverage is disgusting.

In terms of the dogs though, if Boyd had come out and said he wanted to play for St Kilda I wouldn't have argued, and no other Vic club would have either. They're not to blame for making the most of an opportunity, they paid a heavy price in doing so as well.

Boyd had extra leverage because the Dogs captain was walking out of the club .. not an everyday situation

It's not that he's wishing failure on him. It's that his reason is because he hopes he turns out right.

It'd be like me saying, I hope the pies play bad this year because then I'd be right that they're not good. The only difference being this flog is a media professional

And had nominated a specific club. That club 'had' to get the deal across the line, as they'd targeted a contracted clubs captain.

Leigh giving the Doggies ammo knowing Richmond is on the fixture lol.
I don't know why this is about Richmond but ok.

Liam jones usually kicked multiple goals against rance so Boyd might go alright

maybe carlton should learn something off the doggies instead of relying on jones and casboult.

Is the lesson go blow 7 million dollars on a kid that has only played 9 games? While in those 9 games kicked 8 goals and averaged 6 disposals?

Liam was only a 3rd rd pick and Levi no way even on a fraction of that money, if Blues pulled off a deal like that I'd be questioning the boards decision. I like Tom but don't think he has earned that kind of contract unlike Jeremy at GWS

I really hope this works out for the bulldogs.

I believe that GWS has robbed them blind mainly because of Griffen wanting to leave.

is it true that the bulldogs are paying some of Griffens Contract aswell ??

"I hope it doesn't work out"

Referring to Boyd at the Doggies just now on channel 7. Quite vindictive. I usually like what he has to say, but this is unfair and unwarranted in my opinion.

Thoughts?

I agree, we cant have an unsuccessful team copying what other successful teams have been doing for decades. It will destroy the fabric of the game.

Your club would have given him as much, if not more, at the end of this season. They thought they had him signed, sealed and delivered.

Liam Jones wouldn't be at Carlton if the Dogs hadn't landed Boyd.

What are you still doing here?

We'd still want another marking target like the Dogs who wanted to retain Jones in Boyd's development years.

With the Dogs upping the ante for the Giants, it would have cost us Murphy/Gibbs, pick seven or Jaksch, Whiley, pick 19 and at least a million dollars of our salary cap.

Meh.
