Its a bullshit figure because it doesn't mean anything on its own.35K breakeven is bullsh1t!
Taking out the Big 4 VIC teams, who all benefit from pumping up each other’s figures with multiple Showdown-esque fixtures per year, only the Eagles, Crows and Dockers average over 35K.
We’re averaging 34K this year.
Everyone else i.e. 10 teams including the likes of Hawthorn and Geelong are below that.
And we can’t make any money.
Farce.
If 35,000 members and corporate ticket holders turned up and not 1 single person purchased a ticket at the gate or at Ticketek then the equation is
35,000 x $2.40 attendance fee paid by SMA = $84,000 - Match Day costs which nobody ever reveals.
If 35,000 turn up and 5,000 have purchased tickets at the gate and at Ticketek and lets say the average price across all seat categories and adult/concession/ juniors is $30, then the equation is
35,000 x $2.40 attendance fee paid by SMA = $84,000
+ 5,000 x $30 = $150,000 so total inflow is $234,000
Less
Match Day costs which nobody ever reveals.
+ Ticketek service fee on those 5,000 tickets
So saying 35,000 is break even is meaningless by itself.
The game makes money because effectively 1/11th of membership fees and 1/11th of corporate box income + other revenue streams for the match like functions, advertising, signage etc are part of the total equation.
