Brilliant article and great back story of Max James, one of my favourite players who may not be well remembered among the pantheon of Port Adelaide greats of the era.
In 1977 Max James was the state's leading full back but wanted to be shifted on ball. He played in SA's state team in WA and was moved during the game from full back to on ball where he won the medal as SA's best player.
Jack Cahill joked he started wearing the medal to team dinners to show Jack how good he could be on ball.
Port were playing Norwood at Norwood shortly after (may have been the next week) and were well behind at half time. Jack decided to put Max on ball and he lit up the midfield and sparked an unlikely comeback and win at one of our toughest hunting grounds.
From there Max stayed on ball and played in the 1977 premiership as first follower as the position was back in the day and was in the top 3 for Port. Max was a super athlete and took many memorable hangers in his career.
