To be fair yours were a bit more obvious and you can point to the hit etc

The vision of Libba getting hit didn't really look like his head got hit and he seemed to be fine at the time. Could still legitimately be some other medical issue not concussion.

Dogs mismanaged it no matter how you chop it though

Wasn’t totally out of line with an ‘absent’ epileptic seizure where you basically continue to function to a certain degree but zone out for 20-30 seconds and then you’re back to normal and don’t even realise you were ever even gone

the press conference was a lot longer than 2 minutes after the game ended.

where the hell was your medical team? An opposition player was holding his hand up for them while still holding his jumper, it was clear what was going on. not the first time hes ignored an injury.
It literally happened over a number of seconds 50+ metres away from ball on the other side of the ground. They don't have eyes in the back of their heads, nor did they have time to review any footage before the game ended. If it happened any earlier in the game, it's a fair bet that they would have had time to bring him off and check him and the footage over.

Once the game is over there is no reason to do an urgent concussion test. It's already been stated that they're looking at him over the next 24-48 hours. Bevo should have said nothing without knowing the full story, but his words don't make Libba any more or less concussed.

Last week, Adam Simpson said during the post-match presser against the Swans that Ryan Maric had a punctured lung and three fractured ribs. Turned out he had neither and it was just bruising. With all the activity that goes on during a game, it seems like coaches don't get a lot of specific info about players when they get injured -- probably to avoid information-overload. So at this stage, I'm willing to give Beveridge the benefit-of-the-doubt.

AFL should definitely be issuing a 'please explain' though. That looked.... bad.

Bevo should have played the straight bat and said they would assess him. This is all inflamed because he tried to talk it down, so dumb.

Can’t wait for the ‘ankle defence’ in a prelim final when a star player is stumbling around like Paul Gascoigne at an open bar.
A few weeks ago at 2am on Saturday morning I clearly had a sore ankle...

On one hand, the game was done, there was no need to keep him out there, even if a team was a man down at that stage it wasn't about to change the result. So I think we can rule out the Dogs being wilfully negligent here. I'd say it's obvious that independent doctors should be on duty at all AFL games to conduct the concussion protocols, but I don't think this was the issue in this particular case.

Still, it looked awful. He needed to be taken off the ground immediately. In that sense the time on the clock shouldn't have mattered in the slightest and what happened and didn't happen from a player welfare perspective needs to be investigated.

if you recall paddy mccartin's career ending concussion that happened at the start of last year (link to a twitter video here) even something as innocuous as this caused a concussion. even a minimal jolt can cause damage to the brain

Yeah, the accumulation of knocks. Makes it hard for the doctors. But the port ones were not complex

The ARC has concussion spotters who are supposed to tell the clubs to take a player off the ground in situations like this.

First have to find out whether a message was sent to the Bulldogs, and then whether the message was ignored.

oh i absolutely agree, the general sentiment was meant to be more reflected as in: club doctors either 1) need to held more to account and do more to protect their players re duty of care, 2) the AFL needs independent doctors (which they already need imo) who can overrule the decisions by club doctors and 3) in general concussions can happen from even the slightest knocks. the way that libba has played historically has (in my eyes) has opened him up to the potential of a lot of concussions.

The independent doctor thing is crucial.

The AFL needs to appoint and pay for the club doctors. They need to be accountable to the player only. If a doctor needs to pull a player they can't be people with a long term connection to the club.

Needs to be a situation where a doc pulls a player and if the club complains the doctor just looks at them and says DILLIGAF

absolutely agree. it's important to have someone in charge of team health that only cares about player safety and nothing more, not someone who may potentially put a players health at risk if it's asked of hem.

Libba plays his game on the very edge of what the human body can cope with. He is not a very large indivdual. Barely 6ft and would only weigh in at 85kg but he plays like a CHF. Constantly crashing and bashing, running 15km (hard gut running) and this must take it's toll on the heart. You also throw in the odd drug here and there and it's not a good mix.

Hope Doctor Zimmerman intervenes and Libba gets a full assessment.
Isn't Dr Zimmerman getting sued already for lack of care or something?

Small Vic club= small fine suspended.

Now if it were to happen tonight at AO...they'll surely make a stand.
