So with the drafts coming up how many clubs are looking 3-4 yrs away? And who really wants a flag and soon?????? Gotta (slightly biased) feeling Geelong will go alright with what they have. But with old guns like N Brown, Robbo and now a handy backup mid and tagger in Rob Shirley on the market its time to sniff at the old guys(i'll gladly have Shirls on our list, just so our mids dont have to worry about him)

Its not as though Brisbane have no young players who have talent.
Common misconception out there.

Im predicting the next 2/3 years to be our chance at a flag before a drop off back to around 7-10.

I'll give you the top 2. The rest haven't shown anything of note yet. Hardly going to help your midfield to pass the ball to Brown and Fev, especially once Black (31 next year) and Power (30 at the start of the season) are gone.

Clark was the best ruckman over the 2nd half of the season. Merrett cant be older than 25 can he? He is probably the best young FB in the league. Harding could be a star in a team that didn't already have Black playing the same role. Drummond isn't old. Plenty of good young players on their list and they just created a 4 year window where they have a good shot at a flag, over those 4 years they can continue to add a good young player or two. Guys like Fev and Brown are the truly rare players, to waste them whilst rebuilding would be stupid.

Being a Freo fan you should be able to understand that the majority of kids take a couple of seasons to find their feet - they're not all going to be Rich or Hurleys. Having said that, it is a general Brisbane supporter groupthink that we are very happy with our youngsters and the progress they have showed. Also, we are building a very solid middle age bracket with players like Drummond, Patfull, Merret, McGrath, Sherman etc. plus the addition of 5 more players with 29 games combined finals experience mean we have a great mix of old, young and middle aged players.

Btw, it is fine to anybody reading this if these names mean nothing to you right now. We all know interstate teams' players take a while to get noticed by the media back here in Melb'.

I agree with this except what you said about Harding. Harding is hopeless. There's no reason Leuenberger can't be a star ruckman, however.

Other than Rich and Clark...

Polkinghorne- Incredible set of hands, and has a good, long kick on him.
Redden- 20 something touches, a few tackles, 2 goals, and a rising star nomination. Not bad for his...3rd game, I think it was
Sheldon- Seems composed and has a good attack on the ball. Has a low disposal count, though.
Hawksley- Very composed footballer, settled in well in his first year.
Leuenberger- Obvious
Harding- I strongly disliked him most of the year... but played a few very good games towards the end of the year, helping keep our home final chance alive, and showing us signs of what he can do.
Hooper- I would like to think he's 'shown something of note'. If he got his head right, he'd be a very, very good small forward.
Sherman- Only 22. Enough said.

I may be wrong but I'm fairly certain all of the above managed at least one, if not two finals. For many of the above, it was their first year, or they have <20 games experience, and to hold a spot in a team which made the semis, is an extraordinary effort.

Now I'm not sure what you mean by 'haven't shown anything of note'. Just how much is a good, young player, expected to show?

But as has been said, guys like Black hardly get any attention, so it doesn't surprise me at all that people haven't heard of, or don't know how great/good/decent, the players I've listed are.

All in good time...

You just established Brisbane has worse... Cool contradiction.

I said the list he gave is probably worse than Sydney. I knew he left players out but it is still a pretty poor list when compared to youngsters from other clubs.

And i said it could be argued that Sydney has the least impressive group of younsters in the comp.

There was no contradiction at all.

The young list thing is a total furphy. Almost every decent power club tops up to aim at a Premmy EVERY year. The only thing that matters is quality on the park be it 20 or 35. Brisbane are doing it exactly the right way. Port need to get back to doing it too as they did for 100 years and more. The only way you can average a Premiership every 3 years for a Century!

Meh, I give up. We'll win another flag before you do anyway so what does it matter.

Polkinghorne.. he's ok but how is he going to replace Black and Power? Doesn't have the stamina or physique to be a full time mid.
Redden - He sure didn't win a nomination. His skillset leaves much to be desired.
Sheldon - Wow, dives in hard. I'm sure that will win a game. Usually you have to kick the ball through the goals but diving in hard may just work.
Hawksley - meh
Berger - could be a star, had 2nd year blues followed by a knee injury. Not looked like the potential star he could be since 2007.
Harding - Good pace, bad kick.
Hooper - sure, if he keeps his mind on the job. Too inconsistent to be anything than a bit part Steven Milne player.
Sherman - oh deary me. If you think he is good then you have something wrong with you. He shanks the ball more in one game than Tiger Woods has in his entire career as a golfer.

Oh dear. Someone take the DeLorean back to 2008 and give Bradesman a ride home.

LOL obviously didnt watch many lions games this year, sherman would have played in any team in the league with his form this year. Pretty funny someone from freo bagging out our lion cubs, they are the team with the full time nanny and thats just to look after the coach:)

Yeah, we'll be right. Thanks for your concern though. :thumbsu:

Rather do something to make ourselves a threat rather than being constantly a team who will be challenging for a flag in <current year + 3>.

Polkinghorne is very good. Every game I saw this year he was great. I think he will be a real player and would welcome him down at Hawthorn. He may end up better than his uncle.

A few of the others go alright too. Brisbane did okay this year despite shooting themselves in the foot a few times. Will probably go better in 2010.

I always like the posts with a big list of untried kids. More than half will end up as hacks, for sure. And it is not a dig at Brisbane, all club supporters do it.

Selwood, Hawkins, Taylor, Varcoe, Hogan, Gamble, Gillies, Laidler, Mitch Brown, Motlop.

OMG we are going to dominate for another 10 years!!!!!!!!!!! Suck it up bitches......

I would be hoping our club continues to use the draft for two picks. I would be looking to the WAFL, SANFL and VFl ahead of recycling AFL players. I personally hope that we go after young best 22 players who originate from WA. If we can push for a flag it would help to sell our case.
