Whats the latest with Hippy and Payne? Are they both good to play this week?

I liked how Daniher got up the ground in the Geelong practice match. Gave us a target and we isolated Gunston and Cameron deep forward. If we can drag Alliir out of the defensive 50 that will go a long way to us winning.

Our midfield bats a lot deeper than Port's. But it won't be any easy game and they will come out all guns firing. Stick with them early and run over them late.

Hippy and Payne both trained with the main group last Friday.
No signs of concern.

I come in peace I think you guys will play off in the big one this year. I live in Adelaide and go to Port games regularly cause my girlfriend is a port fan will be there for this one looking foward to seeing you guys play. Personally I think this one will go either way. Home crowd might just get port over the line nevertheless lions will be in for a huge season

Time for an upgrade growler.

Port site today listed only 3 on there injury list.
Trent Dumont – calf (assess), Jeremy Finlayson – syndesmosis (assess), Jackson Mead – hamstring (assess)

Forward Jeremy Finlayson has returned to full training to push his selection claims following syndesmosis repair surgery last month.

Midfielders Trent Dumont and Jackson Mead have been sidelined recently with respective calf and hamstring injuries but will both return to training tomorrow and be assessed as the week progresses.

Nothing on the Lions or AFL site regarding our injury list yet.

You all may be happy to hear that on SEN Adelaide this morning, Mark Bickley said most of the Round 1 games were almost too close to call.. except one… Lions have to be clear favourites to knock off Poort.

(Could be ex-Crow bias..)

Port away is not an easy match in round 1, we are regular slow starters so this is a genuine 50/50 IMO
I think Fages has the team primed for a good start this year so I am expecting a pretty good performance but no doubt there will be some rust like there was against both Sydney and Geelong, but they were unable to make us pay, hopefully Port don’t either.

No Dayne Zorko so must be still struggling with that hammy. The only changes I can see there is Joyce out for Prior or Answerth and Fort as the sub instead of Lyons.

Very important game to win. Melbourne and dogs away next will be super tough. Port are an experienced and solid team without being spectacular but they have enough to beat anyone on their day and at their ground are always difficult to beat. If we rock up with the right attitude and respect for the opponent I think we get up by a few goals.

i think im coming around on joyce getting a run at it early on. port and footscray are probably the 2 teams we need a genuine third tall the most against, and its unlikely for us to have dizzy available for either of those matches so joyce might be a necessary selection. has all the physical attributes from what ive seen so hopefully he can show the coaches he has what it takes.

Could setup like we did for the Richmond final when Lester took Riewoldt and Andrews floated off Chol to help out.

Let Joyce take Naughton leaving Andrews to float off Darcy and get a 2 on 1

I don't think we'll start slow this year. Based on our pre-season showings, although pre-season form is unreliable, we seem to be primed. The playing group would know just how important knocking off Port would be, especially with the difficulty of the next couple of weeks after.

Maybe, we know the early part of the season is all about banking wins so I’m not concerned at starting slow, long season means we’ve got time to hit peak form towards the start of finals. We’ve also had a shorter pre season than port so think they have probably got more to lose at the moment. Interesting game.
