My best 22 at the moment looks like;

Forwards:
McKay, C. Curnow, Silvagni, Fisher, Durdin, and Martin

Midfield:
Pittonet, Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett, Walsh, and Acres

Defenders:
Weitering, Marchbank, McGovern, Docherty, Williams, and Saad

Bench:
De Koning, Cerra, Newman, and Cottrell

Emergencies:
Young, Owies, Plowman, and Cunningham

Extra Depth:
Dow, Setterfield, O'Brien, and Motlop

Looks like an amazing top 22. Problem is our list depth struggles when we have a high number of injuries.

I'd be interested to see your best 22 if you have Newman and Kennedy at 25 and 26.

If that's as it pans out then 17 is only one year away.
This is pretty hard to do, my best 22:

Saad Weitering Boyd
McGovern Young Williams
Acres Cerra Docherty
Cuningham Curnow Fisher
Martin McKay Motlop

TDK Cripps Walsh

Hewett JSOS Kemp Marchbank

Contentions were:
  • Pitto vs TDK - I'm going with TDK. Young can help with rucking
  • Durdin vs Cuningham - I prefer Cunner's dash
  • Kemp vs Newman - I just prefer Kemp for his versatility and potential
  • JSOS vs Kennedy - JSOS we just need his desperation in the side
The emergencies are these 4 then

Our rookies this year can have time to adjust, as we have: Dow, Setters, Carroll, Philp and Honey ahead of these rookies

Wouldn't mind seeing Ned Cahill and Tyreece Leiu added with our later picks or rookies?
Thoughts?..

In picking 6 defenders, surely the KPPs (Weiters and Young) are in the 6 or 7?

Then it's a question of whether you think Marchy and Brackets can fit in - I think they can as Brackets is quick, nimble and a footballer.

Both are terrific interceptors, Brackets the better ball user by foot.

So there's 4 arguably.

Doc and Saad are no brainers - so there's 6.

Williams, Boyd, Newman - for the last spot?

I don’t know why they didn’t just keep Jones on the list. He will do well for the Dogs.

I found it interesting that a bunch of former carlton players (plus mcgovern) were seemingly the only people to congratulate him on social media.

A number of reasons

Has been paid for this year and would command more money than players we have to cover his position and or jeopardise re-signing other players

Young has shown he can play his role and adding Durdin as a back up, essentially 2 players for the price of 1 in that position

Both Young and Durdin are younger

As things sit, we have one rookie pick and I absolutely think we should reward one of our VFL boys. With young developing small forwards Cahill may be excess to requirements, but would absolutely be worth a go. Leui has been on the rookie radar for a couple of years. His best is great and while playing mostly tall defence, is versatile enough to play in most parts of the ground. Would be a great utility depth option. The other name is best and fairest runner up Alex Cincotta. Driven type who has become a staple in our twos. 26 in December, so a little older, but a backline defensive bull.

Would sit well to reward one of those boys.

So, with the inclusion of Acres, the best 22 will be selected from players already on the list?
Seems a bit “ho hum” as a side.
I understand from the perspective of needing to hit the draft, however it is somewhat concerning that most clubs above us are making more significant moves.

Cats - Bowes?, Henry, Bruhn
Dees - Grundy
Pies - Mcstay, Hill, Mitchell?
Lions - Dunkley, Gunston?
Tigers - Taranto, Hopper

They're not exactly sitting on their hands waiting for us to overtake them.

Quality teams will miss out on the top 4, hopefully it's our year though.

Is Kruezar still our ruck coach?? Perhaps TDK needs someone different, a more athletic type that can teach him what to do.. It wont happen but would be amazing to have Nic Nat come in for a year and then on as a coach to teach him how to play that role.

Wanna balance that against what those teams are losing this off-season...?

Cats - Selwood
Dees - Jackson, Hunt
Pies - Grundy, Henry
Lions - McStay
Tigers - Edwards, Lambert, Caddy

Carlton have made it very clear that after several years of acquiring players from other teams Cerra/Saad/Willams/Martin/Mcgovern etc that they would go back to the draft and bring in some young kids after several years with very few draft selections, hopefully we nail the draft and bring in some quality kids that are part of the team going forward, certaintly our 1st two selections are important we get right.

The list profile is good, and there is a opportunity for further improvement in many of our players in 2023.

Fair point, but none of those teams have the internal growth or age profile of our list.

What the cats are bringing in is ridiculous.. In saying that, none of those players play round 1 and make them significantly better.
Dees taking a gamble with 2 genuine rucks.. not sure how it works
Pies - McStay dont rate... Hill not guaranteed best 22, Mitchell good get.. but still think they will be found out next year.
Lions - Neither across the line, the lions scary growth will come from Ashcroft..
Tigers - Both good gets, but we couldnt afford these types...

Acres comes in as best 22 for round 1, fills a need and we havent lost anyone we didnt want to lose, and if you looked at it holistically over the past 3 seasons we have brought into our side Williams, Hewett, Young, Cerra, Acres who all start as best 22 players.

It's alright if the rhetoric follows the details but the picks we have at the moment hardly scream out 'impact'.

Well I hope you are right in the view that we don’t need him

This is what I've wondered too with the whole hitting the draft hard thing.

We don't really have many premium picks to be hitting all that hard. Pick 10 (or 11, after the F/S) and 29 (lower by the time we pick) are hardly going to be immediate impact players.

The Dow article on afl.com makes it pretty awkward for him if he doesn't get traded now! Doesn't sound like there's much interest. Wonder if GWS would be a good fit for him

You need to give up something of value to trade up or acquire additional picks, sure with Dow & Settlefield, they will try to trade up some spots for our 2nd or 3rd picks, probably best to wait for end outcome first.
It is not evident we are in this position to acquire additional early picks, l don't see the point trading away next year's 1st round pick, so highly unlikely this is a consideration.

We have a 1st & 2nd round selection, no reason why we cannot make some positive selections there.

Take those comments in the context they were made - in the past two seasons combined we have drafted a total of 3 kids in the national draft, while looking to trade for elite mature talent (Saad, Cerra). This year we resolved to take a targeted and frugal approach to mature acquisition(s), and draft a few more kids. That doesn't mean the club intended to trade out a bunch of valuable commodities to load up on first rounders.
