All I'd say, is who did he grow up supporting. Seems to be what is driving the returns home at the moment.

There seems a fair few names in the pool for possible home/SA returns at the moment W Day, Pickett, NWM
But only Victoria youngest are allowed to go home…. Everyone else is just running out on their club and can’t hack it.

One thing I noticed from the Brisbane game was our elite kicking across the ground.
We have;
-McKenzie, Farrell, Houston and Burton out of defence
-Bergman, Rozee, Butters and JHF in the middle
-Rioli, Marshall, Fantasia in the forward line.

They all have elite field kicks and we were cutting Brisbane up with our foot skills.

The last team that won through elite kicking in my memory was the Hawthorn of 2015.
It's a good sign and I hope it continues going forward.

If Pickett does request a trade and chooses us, how do we get it done?

Wish we had the capital to somehow play for all three, but JHF cost us a bit (worth every penny) and I really don't wanna give up any of our younger brigade. (i.e Bergman etc)

Difficult as we have 11 possible father/sons over the next 3 years. We would need to trade someone worth a 1st round pick.

Not sure if we could trade out our 2024 1st rounder for Pickett or is that restricted by our futures trading for the JHF deal. If we could that may be an option as Rome Burgoyne (F/S) is coming thru and may cost more then we would like to pay to get him.

2 2024 f/s are looking very draftable, rome Burgoyne and Louie Montgomery. Rome is a wingman, I wouldn’t say he’s tracking as a high pick, but he’s definitely on the road to being drafted, and Montgomery has been one of the better Sa kids his age. He’s a goal kicking midfielder who I imagine might start out on a hff.

Beyond that there’s not much of the rest of the 11 someone mentioned looking like coming through.

Gil wakelin is a kpp, right now it’s too far out to know anything

Afl reported no one is blocked from trading their future picks this year so yes we can.

Rome looks good, and this far out it’s hard to tell but a low possession-ish (seems to get around 17-23d from games I’ve noticed) winger isn’t exactly tracking to be an early pick.

Interesting re our 24 first? So am I correct that we traded out our 23 first in the JHF deal?

Just as a thought experiment, say Pickett and NWM request trades back home to us this off season, and at least one F/S tracks as a late first. Who are we shopping around to make something work?

Seen Bonner mentioned before, Sinn I'd like to keep but is an unknown injury wise, there's really nobody else I could think of that would be expendable and worth getting rid of for the trade capital we'd get back.

Georgiades/Bergman our only possibility of Pickett...

My opinion is we don't keep both. I hope that's wrong tho.

There's a lot to play out this season and we will only have a better idea half way through the season if Georgiadis and Bergman will sign on.
If they still haven't signed on by then most likely both of them will be leaving. Im predicting West Coast & St Kilda (Saints hinting at Bergman).
This scenario would get us two 1st round draft picks. We could use these two 1st round picks to do a pick swap get a top 10 1st round pick which gets us dam close to Zane Duursma. A Port fan, family connections to the club and a forward who can kick multiple goals basically covers for Georgiadis.
Sinn can cover for Bergman on the wing.

Regarding Pickett it would be a great pickup BUT... we already have Jnr Rioli & Orazio (on the park so far) along with Evans (looking good) & McEntee. Provided we let McEntee go end of the year do we really need another small forward? It will definitely cost us at least a 2024 future 1st round pick and more...
We currently have pick 35, 51, 64, 82 which is subject to change based on how we finish end of year.

Rather we get Zane then Pickett if the situation unfolds like I predicted

C'mon, keep up with the times ... Pickett has moved to the midfield now, and he is just elite!

If he wants to come, we have to take him!

So let’s say off season goes well and we land McKay/Himmelberg for defence. McCallum and Marshall have another year of their draft contracts and will be long term prospects. What do we do with Jonas, Clurey (contracted 2025), McKenzie and Pasini (contracted till 24)? Lord as well?

We have so much deadwood on our list at the moment. Players who either are;

(a) never going to be good enough [Jackson, Williams, Mead, McEntee, Lord]
(b) well past the hill [Jonas, Lycett, Dumont]
(c) out of favour with our moronic coaching group [Hayes, Clurey, Bonner]

It is really is a shocking position to be in when it appears that almost a quarter of your list could very well be delisted at then end of the year and you wouldn't blink an eye. A string of bizarre list management decisions and terrible development led to this point.

I dont quite agree with this, mostly with (a) above. I reject recruitment that provides no opportunity to assess performance at AFL level. I have no idea, for example, whether Lord could perform at AFL level.
He's shown some stuff at SANFL, difficult as it is as a forward in that competition. I cant imagine he would be any worse than George at the moment. This goes back to point (c) - lack of forward planning by coaches and a general lack of vision.

As a first pass, I have been happy with recruitment, with the exception of lack of selection of a potential key defender or two, about 3-4 years ago.

Zerk Thatcher currently dominating GC forwards, hope we have been in his ear. Much improved defender that has a good balance between shut down & intercepting.

Lord and Jackson being in that bucket is probably harsh but at the end of the day I think it is true.

Jackson still looks like a 13 year old after two pre-seasons and can't find the footy at SANFL level.
Lord just doesn't have it in my opinion. Too slow and not athletic enough in the modern game. Not really good around the ground.

Both those players being busts doesn't mean our recruitment has been bad though. Both are late picks and Lord is a tall. The actual likelihood of those type of guys being successful at AFL level is vanishing small. You win some you lose some.

The only genuinely shit recruits that I can think of in recent memory are McEntee and Williams.

McEntee was just a bizarre pick up. Small, low skill, low ceiling player that didn't address a need.
Williams was taken high and just has not come on. At the end of the day a end of first round pick is a high price to pay for a player who has never really looked close.

So to summarise, recruitment has been OK.

What has been shit is our current list management, specifically our contracts.

Like, why is Williams still on the list? Why is Hayes still on the list? Why is Clurey still on the list? Why is McEntee still on the list?

All those guys, with the exception of McEntee, were given reasonably long term contracts and as we come into the final years of those contracts they are nowhere near it. It's just poor list management.
