I still don't get why people think Boak will retire. He hasn't slowed down at all.

He just stinks in front of goal. Have him involved in the build up to the goal, not the finisher.
It shouldnt be a question about him retiring. We just shouldnt retain him.

Hasn’t slowed down at all?

2021 disposals- 27.8
2022 disposals- 26.8
2023 disposals - 15.9
2024 disposals - 15.5

That’s the literal definition of slowing down.

He’s still capable and not total rubbish, but he’s on the absolute knife edge of playing on too long.

i would much rather he leaves while we still remember him as a gun then plays on too long and sours that legacy.

We’re watching Dixon destroy his.

Him being in way less midfield rotations has nothing to do with his fitness.

If he was the same player he was he would be in those on ball rotations.

But he’s isn’t.
He was the same player years ago and he was playing at half forward.

They want to give minutes to Rozee, Butters, Drew, and Wines is incapable of playing out wide. So Boak is the guy sacrificed, and again, he moves around fine and is fit. He's not like a finished Robbie Gray where we are playing a man down.

Are you arguing that Hinkley is sacrificing one of his favourite sons to give minutes to one of those boys.

If boak was still the same player you couldn’t pry him out of that on ball rotation if you had a knife to hinkleys throat.

Boak is not the same player he was, and that’s why he’s moved roles as others have gone past him. The proof is quite literally there in black and white. It’s obvious when you watch him too.

He should leave the game while he’s still remembered as a gun.

This is coming from someone that loves boak.

Is that a development issue more than trading and drafting? We need speed on our half forward line. Hopefully Sinn can provide speed off of halfback
Its both but when you continually trade away picks in the 30's and 40's even low 50's that after academy picks end up in the high 40's and you draft a lot of kids in the 60's, 70's 80's and rookies and delisted free agents who are a bit injury prone, then your get exposed for depth.

Also doesn’t help that we paid through the nose for our f/s / nga kids while other teams get theirs for peanuts.

I said at the time jones bid at 16 and mead bid at 25 were absolute rorts and about 20-40 picks too early for each of them.

Matching those bids for average to poor footballers wiped out a few draft picks.

Combine that with the fact we’ve given up a few mid range picks to move up the order and given up picks to trade players in (often paying ridiculous premiums for those players)

I think our draft team has been good to excellent in terms of picking players with what they have.

Development has been horrible.

Both Jones and Mead were regularly rated in that 15 to 30 range. There were no rorts.

You make it sound like we lost a dozen picks thru these two picks.

Our recruiters have done a good job at the top end, but continually draft too many flakey flankers, who stay that way in our development program and with our coaching philosophy and get exposed time and again in big games.

They never should have been rated that highly.

Just looking at the 2019 draft.

25 Mead

26 Will Day

We could have screwed Sydney right over but really there's only a couple of players at the back end of that draft you'd get excited about.
He's around the mark if you redo that draft.

2020 draft

Lockie at 16

Gulden at 32 the bargain

The back end of that draft falls right away Maurice Rioli at 51 maybe.

Redo that draft and it's not far off either.

That’s not correct will day was an early teens pick, off the top of my head went just before we chose Bergman.

Wasn't Gulden considered the better player between he and Campbell for the majority of their junior careers? Blew my mind when he went that late. McDonald, Campbell and Gulden is a great haul.

Hinkley must' be gone

Dixon out
Boak out
Clurey out
McKenzie out.
MacN Cheese

Trade
Wines
Burton
Finlayson
DBJ
I would even see if any W.A wants Marshall

Travis Boak is the exact same player he has always been with the exact same strengths and the exact same weaknesses.

I think this will be Boak's last season because at some point both he and the club have to move on from each other. But he's still a good contributor and best 22, I reckon he could go again if required.

Someone mentioned him possibly in a leadership role at North next year. Sounded like a thought bubble but it would be somewhere he would have value and if he wanted a career in football post Port it’s probably a good idea to get away from here. The AFL will do something to make North competitive it may not be bad timing to end up there.

Thursday I looked at the blokes who have played 350 games.

My first thought was Boak's career is more John Blakey than Gary Ablet Jnr, Joel Selwood, Dougie Hawkins.

Blakey was a good solid footballer running machine, with durability like Travis, who won a couple of flags. Boak's a better player than Blakey but he isn't close to the career of Ablett and Selwood.

The KPP's are different type of players but there are some real greats of the game in there, Doull, Roos, Franklin, Hawkins and Pavlich.

And Eddie leaves him in his dust when it comes to goal kicking ability.

The obvious changes we can all see. I'd give Finlayson and Marshall a shot under a new coach, but everything else spot on.
