Im not sure Garcia really moves the needle much. Happy to be wrong.
Almost seems like a shuffling chairs on the McEntee, Francis Evans, Narkle roundabout
We've got 44 players on our list, not all of them are going to move the needle. Doesn't mean you shouldn't look to improve where you can. Garcia probably isn't a future AA but he's easily better than the names you mentioned, and I'd argue he's better than Mead too.

Wouldn’t mind actually having some crafty goal kicking smalls up forward like Rioli rather than targeting more failed midfielders but better than state league players.

It’s no surprise we fail to score when majority of our smalls are all defensive players and don’t create anything on their own.

Look at Brisbane with Cameron, Lohman, Ah Chee.

Pies the year before with Hill, Elliot, Mcreery.

Cats with Stengle, Close, Miers.

They are all attacking, damaging and goal kicking forwards. We need to stop continuing to recruit the same type of player up forward. We don’t need another Garcia type who may kick 10-15 goals. We need an actual goal kicking forward with craft and forward smarts that actually attacks the goals.

So sick of half our forward line playing defensively rather than attacking and actually causing the defenders to be mindful of them.

Thankfully we took Boak over Thorpe, but would have been nice to have Jack Riewoldt.

Jeremy Howe would have been significantly better than Ben Jacobs

Lachie Neale would have been a pick every team would regret ignoring.

Missed our chance at Alex Pearce

We took Boak over Selwood. Apparently clubs, including us, were concerned about Selwood's knee reconstruction, according to Peter Rohde. Since then we have drafted players with injury history.

If he can get back to full fitness I'm of the opinion SPP's bull in a china shop attack on the ball and any oppo player who gets in his way should improve the goal scoring chances of who ever the small forwards are on any given day.

I expect Rioli, DBJ and Rozee ( who many of us would like to spend more time up forward ) would all improve their goal scoring outputs with SPP in the vicinity to keep the opposition defenders honest, he has been a bigger loss than many of us probably predicted.

It would be great to pick up an A grade small forward like eg Pickett, but that is unlikely to happen and I have my doubts a fringe player from another club would do much, or any more than the aforementioned.

I find it amazing, that in a year where the draft is seen as very strong, we're sitting here with the sort of trades being talked about that we have:

Rioli for Pick 6 + more. Are you friggin kidding me. Are the media Tiger's fans trying to pump this up. Rioli would be worth a late first rounder at absolute best. How does 6 even come into consideration. Surely that was just some pipe dream talk from Richmond when they heard he wanted to go there.

Noble for Pick 12. I mean WTF, the guy couldn't get a game half way through the year. He's a fringe half back flanker. He aint changing games or the fortunes of GC. In what way is he worth anymore than maybe a late 2nd to 3rd round pick.

I feel like I'm taking looney pills!

When the Vic clubs are trading it is as if their players are dripping in gold. Meanwhile Dan Houston for 2x mid 1sts is being seen as unrealistic? Far out.

I'm not sure why you're surprised, it happens every year.

I don't remember hearing so many obviously ludicrous trades. I mean the Bowes one was an exception, but these that are being floated are just insane.

Have you seen Adam Cooney's Megatrades? Even twitter users have asked him to please stop.

Is the draft strong? Or is it just very even. There's no standout number 1 pick because there are no great players. When JHF was number 1 he was dragging South to a Prelim final. Now Sid Draper is a top pick, and South were still languishing at the bottom, just avoiding the wooden spoon.

Clubs aren't trading pick 2 for two late top 10 picks, because the guy you get with pick 2 isn't a much better prospect than the guy you get with pick 10.

My understanding is that there are 4 top prospects but that you can throw a blanket over prospects 5 through 20.

Its an above average draft as theres more talls than usual and both vic teams were strong

Looked into the stats a bit more to contrast Garcia and Richards (in terms of a small forward role)

I think in summary
  • Garcia presents as more of a ball winning half forward
    • Good pressure, tackling and GB gets. Does not hit the scoreboard as much (A typical Bulldog half forward)
  • Richards probably spends more time in a more structured system where he is a dedicated small forward
    • Does not see as much of the ball, kicks a bit more goals

It's worth noting that Garcia dominates in the VFL stats wise

Averages 29 disposals, 7 tackles and just under a goal.

So he's probably competing with someone like Mead for a HHF/midfield role

And Richard would be competing with Evans/McEntee

Good analysis. I think Garcia is what we were hoping mcentee would become but hasn’t. Not sure if either of them really move the needle for us though.
