List Mgmt. List Management 2024-25

The list management team is currently paying the debt for poor drafting and development of tall players.

Our spine this year was almost entirely trade-ins (Dixon, Soldo/Sweet, Aliir, Zerk-Thatcher), not to mention Ratugolea. This is the most of any top 8 team, all the others have at least 2, most have at least 3.

Since 2012 we have drafted 19 talls (Georgiades/McKenzie and taller). Every other top 8 team this year has drafted more despite most of them already having better Tall players on their list throughout this period.

We have targeted 15 talls through trade/free agents. This is equal first of all teams, alongside Hawthorn (Who have attempted to recruit some absolute piss blasters in Vickery, Patton, and Hartigan and recruited back Gunston) and Carlton (who couldn't stop themselves when it came to GWS rejects). We don't rate drafting talls as much as other clubs, so we pay up for them in draft capital and salary.

Each of the other clubs has had late draft picks give value because they keep going back to the well.

Payne (54), Aliir (44), Stewart (40), Kolodjashnij (41), Riccardi (51), Sweet (R23), Sicily (56), Silvagni (53)

Our best late-drafted contributors are Clurey who was ok but we've put a line through, as well as Howard and Ladhams, who we traded and aren't best 22 at their new clubs. Lord might come good, we'll see.

The numbers I've worked off using draft guru and a bit of adjusting on the fly (Tom Green, Finn Callaghan are not talls but James Sicily is depsite being shorter). There are certainly some mistakes, but the difference between the other clubs and us is so stark that I think my point stands.

The question is what came first the chicken or the egg? Did we decide to not focus on drafting talls because we can't develop them, or can we not develop them because we don't draft enough?

Great analysis.

Not only do we have to pay a kings ransom to fill the tall holes on our list, we also miss out on another little bonus that other clubs get: Trading out surplus talls for draft capital. Look at Geelong getting a 2nd round pick out of us so we can take their depth tall.

We did it with Howard, and that's about it in the last couple of decades.

In what world are Rory Atkins, Matt Crouch and Jed McEntee on an AFL list but Brad Crouch is not?

I think I’ve woken up in an alternate universe.

We will not target talls with our first pcik, they will look as best available, where depending if we trade down to Pick 10, it will be either Bo Allen or Tobie Travaglia - Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country DEF/MID, 187cm

Tobie Travaglia does look very good and feels like a port pick.

I'm just not on the bo allen bandwagon and don't see him coming to Port.

He really does need a kick up the arse.

Gets delisted and given another opportunity, works his butt off in 2022/23 to reap reward and play 20 great games. Instead of building off that he completely slacks off in the next pre-season. Disappointing.
Did he slack off? Coz he's defintely fallen off the map again. Slow as in 2024, just can't play him despite his footy IQ. Sometimes players who don't have the athletic ability can get up for a short time but the demands become too much & they regress again. I think he's finished & we really needed him to maintain that form.

We weren’t exactly stacked with small forward options. And we had SPP out all season and Rioli went on his usual mid year hiatus.

SPP did his usual suspension & Rioli did his usual disappearing act. Both are undisciplined & cost the team dearly. Ken doing wonders with these players as usual.

JHF talking about a group of the young players going to Wisconsin for training and rehab advice specifically spoke about how banged up some of them were by the finals. One of the things they are looking at is better management of their health and fitness leading into finals.
Ken always floggs his best players. It's all about him making the finals.

I hope it was his body adjusting to the rigours of being an athlete, he didn’t miss any games and while it looked like he lost a yard of pace, hopefully 2 years of work have been rewarded with a break/rest and he comes back in a few weeks and rips the track to pieces. I hope it was his ‘second year blues’ because the first few years he never worked hard enough to be an AFL footballer.

Dyl to surprise a few in 2025!

I think the coaches have written him off tbh. Regardless of whatever happens I think 2025 is his last year.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

I actually would like to see him go back to the medium forward role he was drafted at. After playing HB for a few years I think he'll have a better tank to run out games and while he lacks a bit of speed, he's got high footy IQ and can take a good overhead mark.

100% it is. It was stupid then, and stupid now. He has never done anything other than fail on the wing every time he's played there. That was fact at the start of the year and still is. He is an elite intercepting defender, it's so god damn obvious.

My problem isn't that he's leaving, it is that, he was so bad in the first half of last season, on a wing, that we know him as a hugely valuable, first round pick. But opposition sides when trading for him won't be valuing him as highly. He needs a big year for his currency to be clearly very high, if we are to lose him and maximise the trade return we get for him.
Very obvious in 2023 that his best position was as a defender. Got plenty of the ball there & was very versatile. On the wing he got totally lost and yet Ken played him there again at the start of 2024 & persisted for too long.
