Lose to North and season over?

I think someone mentioned in another thread that in one of our other finals years (04/03?) we lost the vast majority of our first 10 games but still ended up making the finals.
So it's definitely not season over if we lose. But we really should win.

Both of our sides are developing and I won't be placing too much emphasis on either side missing the 2010 finals. The priority is to have the kids improving in leaps and bounds by seasons end.

I can see the North/WCE rivalry of the mid 90's being reignited in a couple of years.

That stated, whoever loses this one will definitely be putting the cue in the rack for 2010.

Going 0-3 isn't the issue per se. As others have pointed out, it's still very possible to make the finals after a poor start. But losing to a team that is struggling as bad as North Melbourne would be a really, really bad sign. Plus, it would have a real impact on morale.

Loosing against North pretty much discounts finals. We would need 12 wins from 19 games to make finals and we still havent played the bulldogs, geelong, StKilda, Collingwood, Hawthorn etc...

Does not making finals classify as a failed season? probably because the expectation from coaches and fans was that we would do it. However we are still finding a team to take us forward as evident by our forward, midfield and backline which has kids in and out every week. Another year into putting those players in place would not be a wasted season at least.

The team thats in this week IMO is the closest to our best 22 then any other game so far. It looks like a winning team on paper and really should beat North, even if its only by a kick.

We haven't lost three in a row at the start of the season for a long long time.

I think I heard that the last time was 1989.

If we lose this week, pressure will be on Woosha, and Mark Barnaba.

Barnaba may have to step down with his new job anyway.

Interesting times for the club.

Soogle182;17343455First AFL game of the year we played a very focused and positive Brisbane Lions team and to 3 quarter time we were definately in the game. Fair enough said:
we tired out [/B]and lost it by over 30 points in the end
FFS. Jesus, we ran out of legs:confused:......... They ****ing ran out of players. FFS they had 0 players on the bench to rotate with.
We were beaten by a side without any ****ing legs.
Pathetic.
Our draw at home this year is very tough.

Our next 9 home games- 7 of last years finalists + Fremantle + Hawthorn. We need to win games away from home, and this week is one that we should win.
Will be smashed by Freo on current form.:mad:

Lose to north and I fear, it will be the thin end of the wedge. We need to beat North. The North - Port game, North came storming home and Port almost couldn't stop them. We smash Port in inside 50s and they win by 3.
This is a coin toss. The only silver lining if we win is that it is in Melbourne, in front of 59 fans.

The pressure will mount on everyone. From top down meaning those at the very top will look at Woosha and Woodhouse very quickly and i think Woosha might get the thin edge of the sword if we arent still in finals contention by mid season.

If Woosha bites the bullet and accepts that some of our current so called best 22 aren't taking this club forward then i find missing out on the eight an acceptable outcome. Otherwise we might just end having a repeat of 2009.

At least if that happens we know Worsfold wont prop the side up to win another contract extension. Ive got faith he would do the right thing by the club and cull more senior players in favour of the kids.

In terms of the maths of it all, absolutely not- 3 games is nothing, seasons can turn around very fast.

If we do lose this weekend though, it will be a massive blow to the morale, and the blowtorch will be on Woosha in a way it has never been before. If we can't take down the Kangas after their insipid showing last week, people will rightly question if we will any game in Melb this year.

Big game, come on boys.

Once again no forward line, so nothing has changed. We are in for another bloody long year and will get pumped by the Dockers, so all in all we are on the up !! NOT !!!!!!!!!

People need to chill.

A win would be great, but a loss is not season over.

Heck if we don't make the finals I will be disappointed but not upset, as long as we improve on last year and begin to address some of our weaknesses.

Spot on. Maybe we have been too successful? Some people expect too much.

The season will be a success if we come home strong again and drop off the dead wood along the way.

2010 was never about winning a premiership, nor 2011 for that matter, they are just preparation for 2012 - 2016. That will be our window if these young players are good enough.

Quite possibly.

In 23 seasons we have only missed the finals 6 times.

3 premierships, 5 grand finals and a quick rise to dominance in our early stages, then recently when Worsfold took over as coach, has set the tone.

I think it is expected that the club know how to succeed, both financially and on the field.

Maybe fans need to be a little more patient?

I hope so.

But people often look at WC and Hawthorns meteoric rise and think this is the standard for an AFL team. 4-5 years and you will again be at the top after you bottom out, draft well and have an ok gameplan/resources and a little luck.

First Geelong, then now possibly WB and St Kilda, have all taken longer to mature into top flight premiership winning or contending teams.

(how good were st.kilda last nite..what a display of discipline..love watching the pies+sarnt major mick get whacked..)

on post - hardly season defining..definitely disappointing..
i'm hoping to turn on the TV and see a team that is progressively gelling..
this could be the game we want, where we not only get a win in,but see some step-up performances, better skills..reasons to be cheerful.

if not, theres always next week, and it still wont be season defining..my only expectations this season are to see a greatly improved team by rnd 22,and some great new players unpeeled..and to enjoy the ride.
