Mentioning Buckley (the player) in a thread like this is pretty ridiculous and just smells of bitterness.

Yes winning a Flag is the aim of anyone involved in footy, but he basically carried our team for a decade and was a big part of an undermanned team getting to 2 straight Grand Finals. And outside of a flag he pretty much achieved everything you would want as a player... and I reckon that 95% of players would give up their careers in a heart-beat if they could replace it with the career that Bucks had.
(Also you can't really say that the Brisbane Lions team that 3-peated was the same as the Bears team that drafted Bucks... I don't think anyone at that stage would've predicted how good the Lions became).

But if there is any truth in the comments attributed to Buckley (e.g., only wanting to play for a "big" club, and Brisbane won't win a premiership), you can understand why he is / was ridiculed.

You're talking shit.

"The quote I'm reminded of so often revolved around my desire, as a Collingwood player, to 'help the club play in finals.' I made this comment in one of my first interviews as a Magpies, in the players' race the week before my first game at the club, and it has since been used against me. Show me a player that doesn't want to play in finals and I'll show you a player who won't be around for long. I was simply stating what should be the goal of every player in the game. What's wrong with that?"
- Nathan Buckley All I Can Be

Show us where Buckley said that he chose Collingwood over North or any other club because he "believed the Pies were a better chance of playing finals."
That's what he apparently told Greg Miller and Dennis Pagan when he decided not to come to North. Obviously Buckley's version is going to be different.

No bitterness. IIRC the deal landed us Chris Scott, who was pretty important in our premiership years (especially so when you consider it also indirectly brought us Brad, too).

And I totally agree no one (least of all Fitzroy fans!) could predict how things would end up. But you have to admit there's a certain interesting irony in leaving to win premierships and then NOT, whilst the team you left goes on to win 3?

Of course it was ironic... and was repeatedly brought up by the media in 02-03 (if my memory serves me), and I'm sure he copped a whole lot of stick for it from the Lions players during those years... but in no way does any of that make Bucks worthy of being put on a "Riches to Rags" list.

Nathan Brown, although to be fair, was on the verge of an AA calibre season with the Tigers before suffering that horrific knee injury against Melbourne and was never the same player.

From a Carlton perspective, Lawrence Angwin had all the talent and tools to tear up the league, but wasted it with his drug addiction/off field issues. Such a pity :(

Sharrod Wellingham?

Came with big wraps from a more accomplished midfield, commanded a (late) first round pick and a reasonable chunk of salary cap space. Really hasn't delivered and was dropped during 2014.
The ultimate hipster.

One from the 70's vault ... John Pitura who was an absolute star for South Melb. when they were was based in the Melb. and was spirited away in 1975 by Richmond for a heap of cash and the prospect of a flag which never eventuated. However as quite often happens, he never found the form that made him a near champion at the Swans and fell by the way side after 3 seasons playing only 40 games.

Ironically he was swapped for three Richmond players who all did very well at their new club with Graham Teasdale winning the 1977 Brownlow, Whale Roberts starring as the No. 1 ruckman and Francis Jackson a bit player at the Tigers, who turned into the Swans best rebounding defender, notching up 100 games.

I think Mick would have found enough cash along the way, not to be wearing any rags !!! :)

While in the 70's vault the first major all-star trade ended in misery for one of the parties. In 1971 St Kilda and Richmond did straight swaps for Ian Stewart & Billy Barrot. Stewart went on to win his 3rd Brownlow playing for Richmond, but Billy Barrot managed only 14 games in 1971 (2 for St Kilda and 12 for Carlton).

St Kilda was the big loser in this deal. But so too was Bustling Billy. From http://www.sportsfan.com.au/superstar-trades-that-fizzled/tabid/91/newsid/96636/default.aspx:

"With his explosive pace, limitless stamina and habit of occasionally kicking opponents, bustling Billy Barrot was a hard man to play against. But he was also a hard man to coach. By 1971, the Richmond hierarchy had began to tire of the hot-tempered midfielder who had brought a lot of trouble, along with two premierships, to Punt Road. St Kilda saw their opportunity and handed over two-time Brownlow Medallist Ian Stewart to seal the deal. Unfortunately for the Saints, Stewart subsequently became a three-time Brownlow Medallist while wearing the yellow and black. Barrot, on the other hand, was dragged during his second game for St Kilda and it was an experience he clearly didn't enjoy. Close observers could tell this by the way he promptly walked out on the club."

Des Headland 2002 Premiership players would've been part of 2003 and possibly even got 2004, goes home for ???

Also suprised no mention of the following
Warwick Capper and his move to the Bears.
Brad Hardie left the Dogs when they were strong in the mid 80s to be part of the inaggural Bears team.
Tony Modra going to Fremantle (something about going to Freo)
Rusell Morris going to St Kilda in 1990.
Jeff Hogg to Fitzroy

Adam Heuskes falls into the complete waste of talent catergory. The guy was unbelievable when at a new club, but left each of Sydney, Port & Brisbane at offield problems with alcohol, drugs and rape allegations hanging over him after only 2 seasons (think spent 3 at Sydney before being shipped off following the rape allegation)

Never understood WCE giving up a decent draft pick for him. He will always be a 3rd stringer and only look good in a really strong midfield.
